Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

Speaking of that artwork, I made this 1600x900 wallpaper with my rudimentary Microsoft Paint skills. Note I left some white space on the right to accommodate two columns of desktop icons if need be.

That being said, it'd be GREAT if someone could replicate the dots so they seamlessly continue from the main image and fill in the white space on the left.

Dat JPEG compression.

Downloaded the off-screen gameplay video at 60 fps.

Wow.
I wasn't impressed with the game much before just because of expectations.

But it looks great.

also, seeing the direct footage in high quality off the eshop makes all the difference. The grass and the trees look amazing. Some may say im over reacting, but i think the artwork is phenomenal.

The overworld looks nice. It's the character and the lack of shading and the weird Galaxy glow (and lack of any shadows)

Maybe...but this artwork is great.

It feels like you can jump right in that tube right after luigi. Nintendos artstyle is awesome.

It'd be cool if the in-game visuals were a bit more reflective of these visuals. Looks almost claymation-like with the textures and lighting, I'd kill for a Mario game that would draw from that kind of aesthetic.

Don't use Imgur for high res pictures if they're jpgs. It automatically adds more compression.

Theyre not far off, at all.

If you haven't seen this game in person, i promise you, from the eshop high quality vids, it looks great.

I think it's what you mentioned in the post prior about the shadows on the models themselves that was sticking out to me.

On a side note I hope orchestrated music is going to make it in (at least a bit).

Theres shadows on the objects(see trees), but the character shadows arent reflective of the actual 3d model, but rather(i believe) pay homage to the past games.

The's the problem. If the characters were more in line with the game it would look MUCH better. The weird glowing and lighting regardless of where they are just makes them stand out. Especially that huge dinosaur thing. If they took away his glow and gave him some shadows he'd look MUCH better.

I was just thinking, what if the world map of the game is very similar to Super Mario World, and contained lots of branching pathways and secret exits, some requiring the spending of green stars.

Although if the grassland plains is really from World 2, it's likely going to be a hodgepodge of random themes again (why do they think we like this?)

i honestly think it would be distracting, especially with four people.

It helps with gameplay to have a circle shadow underneath you, to be able to target when jumping.

Super Mario 3D World looks great, but I hope Nintendo is also making a Mario that's like 64/Sunshine/Galaxy (or open world Mario).

Wii U can't miss out on that, especially since it would really show off the visuals.
What I don't understand with statements like this is that Galaxy is basically just as linear as this game is. Mario 64 and Sunshine allowed real exploration, even though the game world wasn't really that big, but still. Galaxy is just a 3D version of old school 2D platforming, no exploration, just linear path after linear path. But that's not to say it wasn't great, because it was. But that's also confusing, because it just shows that linear 3D Mario game works just like 3D World will work.
People saying stuff like this I think, only complain about the actual graphics of 3D World, not the gameplay, because honestly it isn't that different from Galaxy.

Using something as simple as Nintendoland or Mario Kart 8's lighting would make a huge difference me thinks.
Guess it didn't look good in this especific game.

The more I see of this game, the more I want it. Damn you nintendo, you bastards.

It doesn't make up for not being the spiritual successor to galaxy, but I think we're going to get that game some day eventually anyway.

I can wait...

Plexiglass pipes is one nice idea. You actually see what happens when Mario go down a pipe! If you think about it, it's mind blowing!
And they are very stylish too, almost look like a piece of design!

Does my memory fail me or have there been no significant new enemy creations in a very long time? Feels like all these Mario games, while fun, are just re-using old enemies.

I can't recall how long it's been since I've seen a new enemy type.

That sounds like New Super Mario Bros. U.

I read a post in this thread about how this the simple goal in this game will be getting from Point A (the beginning) to Point B (the flagpole). I tend to agree here. While many Galaxy levels do appear more linear, the concept of collecting Stars allows developers to come up with more quirky methods of earning them rather than just following an obstacle course. Additionally, the Galaxy games, particularly Galaxy 2, offered a plethora of new concepts involving gravity, Pull Stars, Yoshi powers, the Drill item, and floating on those flower petals. I think the complaints are more valid than simply howling at the camera angle. Super Mario 3D World looks like a joy to explore, but I fear the timer limits that severely.

However, I still have no idea how the game will play from this small morsel. They might surprise me with truly innovative ideas, and I can't wait to sink my teeth into this game. While I enjoyed the Super Mario Galaxy orchestra immensely (as well as its overall scale), I do love the theme that plays during the 3D World trailer.

There's generally new enemies in every game, but they also bring back old ones so the new ones might not be as noticeable, I guess. Or it may feel that because Goombas, Koopas, etc are in every game that that's all you feel you see

Your memory may fail you, but the nostalgic memorys succeed Nintendo.

Really, dont fix what isnt broken.

Its not easy to come up with a fresh new ideas in gaming today.

A lot of developers are going after realism, in my opinion, is because they are tastless and cant make a fantasy game.

Its not easy. Look at disney, theres brilliance there, and no one compares.

Same with Nintendo.

Fair enough. I'm sure it's neigh impossible to come up with a new iconic enemy for Mario games going forward, as so much of what players enjoy now is based on that history.

It will never get me to stop playing a Mario game.

As for Galaxy, they definately had great new bosses, so that's true. I think having just recently completed Super Mario 3D Land this year (I know, I'm behind) dulled my memory.

Or my memory just sucks. I'm betting on that.
All I know is I can't wait to see what the grand master finale galaxy/level is about once all 200+ stars/coins are collected. Those NEVER fail to impress. The moment I finished the one in Galaxy 2 was quite a day.

NSMBU had Nabbit and the flying squirrels, just off the top of my head.

why does everyone want a mario galaxy 3?
dont get me wrong they were amazing but cant we just get a new 3d mario ip
galaxy was in the wii cycle
sunshine was the gamecube and
mario 64 was N64
next gen means new.

I think that's exactly what most people DO want. Something new and fresh, like Sunshine and Galaxy were when they released. Instead, we're getting a sequel to Mario 3D Land, which isn't as exciting.

But 3DLand was only a general trial of the formula, that I hope will be gloriously exploited in World. If we judged by NSMB, we wouldn't have wanted sequels probably, instead luckily we got the amazing Wii and U versions.

Baaad example. Comparisons to NSMB are not going to do this game any favors.

I wanted something new. I got a sequel to 3D Land. Will it be fun? Yes. But to me, Mario 3D platformers were surprising and innovative and jaw-dropping. They were more than the sum of their fun. That's why I'm disappointed.

But please don't scare me into thinking this game will begin the descent into the stale, homogenized series of NSMB. That'd be the worst thing for 3D Mario games...

Erm, I still don't particularly want sequels to NSMB, if they stay the way they are. Sure NSMB Wii and WiiU were better than the first, but I'd much rather they changed things up, brought something fresh to 2D Mario.

As much as I tire of the NSMB characteristics that have long overstayed their welcome (same aesthetic, same world and stage themes, same music, the "New" name being a joke at this point, etc.), I think that if you're going to say that NSMBW and NSMBU weren't worthwhile or shouldn't have been made, I'm going to have to disagree.

NSMBU's challenge mode was probably the best thing to happen to this franchise in years.

For me, Wii was where it should've ended. I'm not saying they shouldn't have kept making 2D platformers though. But I would've liked them to feel... well... new.

I just want them to mix up the formula. The three coin collection. Adding/subtracting moves from Mario. Doing something new with the physics or the handling of the game. Completely change up the enemies. Even the feel of the levels is very similar. For me, the sterile aesthetics and the dumb "New" title are the least of the problems.

Honestly, I'm not a game developer. I don't know what exactly I want. That's their job. But I know that the NSMB games are just too similar for me to want any more of them. I have the first three and, despite owning a Wii U, I never got the last one. The only Mario platformer I don't own.

But even in my imaginary world where they make Super Mario Bros. 9 with some exciting new mechanics (more than just new suits), they could still have a Challenge Mode. Nothing stops them from doing that.

As for 3D World, I'll be there Day 1. But because 3D Land sold better than the Galaxies and because it's more accessible for people who can't grasp the 3D games, I have great worries that we'll see the same thing done to 3D Mario as was done to 2D Mario.

I don't like NSMB either, and I hope they really refine that series. They said they were making it a new start, and the first game was a re-envisioning of Mario 1, but the games we've got since then don't feel noticeably different. I guess you could say that both NSMBWii and WiiU feel like Mario 3. But I'm waiting for tha tseries to make a big jump, and I don't see it happening.

As for 3DLand, I think it sold so well because it's a fantastic game with great ideas. The game's control and core feel are massively improved over Galaxy. I can get to grip with Galaxy just fine, it's just not as fun to play. Though its huge volume of great ideas puts it right up there.
