Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS: Info Collection - Dojo, Mega Man and Trailer! 2014!

Ehh, maybe it's just me, but that just sounds unpleasant. I'd rather they go all out. But I'll make due I suppose.

Really? Honestly, I feel that Smash Bros. is a series that really should keep things simple. Subspace Emissary was so overblown and felt awkward, especially when you needed to beat it to play as multiplayer characters. Melee's structure of having a small campaign for each character that took 25 minutes to beat each which unlocked goodies was much more suited towards a multiplayer centric title, and its one I think they should stick with.

It was cool because the levels you played in Adventure mode were sort of piss-takes of established gameplay in the game's respected franchises, like how there was a Metroid stage that replicated the end of Metroid 1, and the F-Zero stage had you racing on a track.

Eh? I was talking about Bowser's rendition in Smash 4 being inspired by BiS. I wouldn't at all be surprised if BiS Bowser had callbacks to Smash Bros. either, kind of like how Pit in KI:U ended up using that redesign before the game was even a thing.

I'm talking about Ryce, not you. Yeah, I know.

Someone explain this to me:

That's Sakurai to Polygon about the new single player mode. What is that even supposed to mean? I was hoping for a new attempt at something SSE-ish, but better. Guys I'm sad.

It hopefully means they will go back to the shorter, character-focused SP content like in the first two games. SSE was an utter chore.

And? He's had the same punch since Melee.

As for his upright stance, he has that in Galaxy, too, which probably inspired both Inside Story and SSB4. It's more likely that EAD's flagship console Mario game had an impact on SSB than an outsourced handheld game.

Sure, but Bowser didn't really do a hell of a lot in the Galaxy games that he didn't already do in Brawl. His Mario 3 ground pound, growing really big and punching a lot, and then spinning around the arena in his shell. BiS gave Bowser some new moves and was the best selling Mario RPG to date, so I'd be surprised if there isn't some sort of callback to him here.

I'm talking about Ryce, not you. Yeah, I know.

Sorry then, the conversation got hard to follow ;(

It only had five levels like that: Mario, Zelda, Metroid, F-Zero and Ice Climbers. Everything else were pre-set Classic-style matches. And, really, it didn't work very well as a replayable mode due to the lack of variation. You were supposed to play it with everyone once at least to get all the trophies and such, but everyone went through the exact same matches and stages, with only very minor variation possibilities (like an Luigi replacing Mario in the first level, an extra match against giant Kirby, Falco replacing Fox in the second Star Fox battle, and Metal Luigi alongside Metal Mario after Luigi was unlocked). Even Classic Mode was less repetitive.

Subspace Emissary was so overblown and felt awkward, especially when you needed to beat it to play as multiplayer characters.

That's false. Every character also had a "classic" way to be unlocked, outside of SSE, SSE itself and also could be unlocked by number of matches. Jigglypuff, Toon Link and Wolf required finishing SSE to be unlocked in the first two methods, but not the third one. Everyone else could be unlocked by alternative methods without ever touching SSE.

Could you imagine if the characters could actually talk to each other this time around?
One thing I've been hoping for for the the longest is personalized intro and win quotes depending on which character you're facing, similar to Fox, Falco and Wolf's win dialogue in Brwal. Also similar to MvC3:

One of the things I liked about the SSE was that it gave the characters a chance to interact a little outside the battlefield. I mean, it sort of gave a sense of "coming together" in a more explicit way. These heroes and heroines were all coming together to face this great threat. I like to see the ways the characters interact beyond fighting, and I think a more fleshed-out story mode does that.

I do think a happy medium could be found though. Just write up a really simple story, throw together some cutscenes, and have the characters traveling through iconic Nintendo worlds. Basically, Melee's adventure mode with a little plot and a few cutscenes.

I'm sorta holding out hope that it'll happen. Despite its numerous flaws, the SSE is some of my favorite fanservice if all time.

This reminds me. I think Bowser's fighting was at its coolest in Galaxy. Multiple energy waves, transformations, barrages of fireballs.

That's alright. I have a question, do anyone know origin of Bowser's dropkick? I thought it was cool move since it reminded me of Mike Haggar. Dat Pipe Mayor.

I wonder if intro and victory pose would be in the game. I know it's at early stage but I do like their new victory pose but I felt that it was weird that we can't see opponents clapping their hands for winner.

Well, it's obviously possible, but we've seen nothing so far to suggest that Bowser gained anything from Inside Story. He has a new stance/walk/run, a low kick, and a dropkick. The stance is vague enough to have been inspired by anything, and the kicks are completely original to Smash Bros.

That's allright. I have a question, do anyone know origin of Bowser's dropkick? I thought it was cool move since it reminded me of Mike Haggar. Dat Pipe Mayor.
I think it's original. Bowser's already a heavyweight with a "grapple" (side B), so maybe Sakurai wanted to "wrestler" him up a little bit as an homage to that fighting game archetype.

Wait, there's actually people who want to see Adventure mode replace Subspace Emissary? I always thought of Adventure mode as being half-finished.

They'll either have an SSE-style adventure mode (hopefully using much more Nintendo assets and shorter platforming areas) or it'll be like you said. However, I can't imagine Sora moving away from the "singular crossover story involving every character" model used in Brawl and it'd be crazy to have every character's adventure mode be from their perspective in the overall story, especially if they have a considerable increase in newcomers.

An adventure mode in the same structure as SSE but with levels being shorter with fights against other characters/bosses being the main focus would be most likely.

I agree with this, but for the characters who can talk though, for the ones who cant personalized intro animations. Example King DeDeDe during a tag team match could high five.

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

Actually there were alternatives way to unlock all of the characters.

I like how fox randomly flinches in the screen while villager recovers.

Link shot him with his arrow. I didn't remove any frames.

Edit: Also what's interesting is it seems the video playing in the background is 1 frame behind, as it's showing the previous frame of Villager.

Yes please!

If Hades is in the game, his intro quote with Pit could be

Pit: Hades!
Hades: Pit!
Pit: Hades!
Hades: Pit!
Pit: HADES!
Hades: PIT!
Pit & Hades: IT'S ON!

They should do an Easter egg if you continuously select and de-select the two at the character select screen.

It has nothing to do with Nostalgia.

I have both games right here and I play Melee's Adventure mode continously a lot more than I play SSE.

I am sure you can, I am however in disagreement that makes adventure mode anything more than a waste of time, you just enjoy it.

I enjoy marvel vs capcom 2, its a horrible broken mess, I can acknowledge that.

SSE did alot of things right, one of them while not excited the best , was having the characters interact. Which adventure mode offered none of , it was things that happened in order, it felt pointless.

Mario's win quote vs. Bowser: So long-a Bowser
Luigi's win quote vs. Mario: I... beat-a Mario?
Wii Fit Trainer win quote vs. Wario/Dedede/Bowser: Let's work out a schedule
Wii Fit Trainer win quote vs. Samus: You're very flexible, well done! (Or something along those lines)

Bowser does an air dodge towards the end of the GIF. You can see him move really quickly and flash for his "dodge" frames.

It's the Brawl version of the air dodge.

EDIT: Also, it looks like run-jump momentum may be returning to this game. Towards the end mario does a short hop into his forward aerial on link. He goes at a velocity comparable to his run speed. (in the same gif)

I will be disappointed if the words "pretty Palutena" or "Professor Palutena" are not spoken by Hades in this game. Playable or no.

If there isn't a Kid Icarus level with dialogue from Hades/Palutena that you can trigger in some way, I will be sorely disappointed. So much room for fan service.

Sakurai already confirmed brawl air dodge is still being used.... As of now so it could change.

Personally I'm glad kirby and bowser did not do instant air dodges when they were sent flying. Oh and I really hope momentum jumps are in.

Agreed. Do it the same way Snake could have conversations about the character he was fighting with the colonel, Otacon, and such, except with Pit on his stage. Plenty of potential for some great dialogue.

If this game's soundtrack doesn't feature Tropical Freeze music I'm gonna scream. (If you guys haven't already, go watch some of the demo feed with audio. It's some glorious, glorious stuff.)

And that's fine, but as a mode itself SSE was pretty boring for me. Adventure mode being shorter and having more variety made it so I'd feel like playing it every now and then instead of the 3 times I have played SSE since it came out.

Nah I think there should be levels where there is an annoucer character and they just talk smack about everyone playing.

You do not trigger it, it just starts, like the boxing ring

this.

i dont expect Hades to be playable but he needs to add commentary to a kid icarus stage, that was my favorite part in the 3DS game

also with Viridi

Screw it, go the whole hog and have all the Kid Icarus and Metal Gear characters talk to each other when they're fighting. Snake Otacon, Mei-Ling, Colonel, Pit Hades, Viridi and Palutena in one conversation? Oof.

I would totally welcome this as well. Maybe instead of the cheering from the random crowd chanting the name of the person that's winning, have them talk.

Holy crap, yes. Make this the easter egg if Snake tries his codec on the KI stage. This just makes me want Snake back even more.

All this talk of KI Uprising has finally motivated me to get back and finish the game up (at Chapter 21).

I really want to see this game take a page out of League/Dota 2's book with regarding to character skins and sounds.

From League, just the sheer amount of skin variety offered. Re-use (most of) the same animations, keep the actual gameplay identical, but vary the skins wildly across the different characters in lots of different ways.

From Dota 2, make the skins modular. Let me add Mario's cape if I want to.

And finally, from Dota 2 add voiceover work for every possible combination of anything ever.

I just realized that we'll get MegaMan's "defeated robot master" for his victory theme <3

I wonder what would Villager's victory theme would be.

More importantly, Bowser has a new airdodge animation. =O

You know, I never understood why the less experienced players airdodge after hitstun stops in Brawl. It doesn't actually affect your momentum at all lol.

About the SSE being cut. I really don't mind as long as whatever single player content is as equally as beefy. Now I'm imagining some sort of custom story mode for each character complete with a CG ending.

Its really a waste. SSE was trying to put emphasis on platforming and story and it's just not what the game is for, they have plenty of other places for that. Either come up with a creative single player brawler mode which implements the core gameplay, or focus all your efforts on making the best multiplayer ever.

It's not worth it to spread yourself too thin, even if the CGI bits are a lot of fun.

Crossover fighting games about character interaction.

also it did impliment core gameplay, what are you even talking about.
