Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

But he is in 3D World! \o/

Yeah, I would imagine he will check in from time to time just to make sure Mario isn't getting in too deep. Seriously though I loved how they used him in the Galaxies, especially when you get to the end of a tough level and he's standing there saying "Oh yeah, the star, I already got it. Here, you can have it." And then in the next level he's stranded in the middle of nowhere, hanging off the edge of a comet with his busted up ship.

I will say this: I do remember playing 3d land at e3 2010 and being completely underwhelmed.
Turned out to be a very poor representation of the full package.
If 3d world goes through the same transition it will be STELLAR. It already played MUCH better and seemed a lot more complex than 3d land in its respective e3 showing.
In confident in the next few months Nintendo will unveil the curtains tshow a better indication of the full extent of the content of this game.

My ideal Mario game would have been an extension of Mario 64. An open world game in which you're plopped in the middle of a field in the mushroom kingdom. You see the castle miles ahead, off to your left a forest, far to your right a vine leading up to a sky world, etc...

But that said, 3D Land was great. And This game looks really awesome. It's about time they brought back the SMB2 characters and abilities. I realize that those characters only became playable due to SMB2 being an altered version of Doki Doki Panic. But it still became a staple in people's minds and I always heard people asking why they don't let us play as those characters. Especially in the NSMB games. Any other company would have made all the popular characters playable in those games but Nintendo is so conservative. The best we can get is one new character, Nabbit, in Super Luigi U. What about Wario? Why would anyone wanna play as a generic toad?

Also the new power up looks great. So I'm happy we're getting this even though it's not really the direction I was hoping they'd go. Honestly Nintendo will never make my ideal Mario game lol. At least what they are making looks fantastic. And NSMB Wii multiplayer is the best shit ever (even though it's harder than single player) so I'll take it.

I find it funny that I'm excited, not to play 3d world 4 player mode, but actually going at it in a more intimate 2 player co-op adventure.
I'll have to choose which of my friends to play it with wisely though. :P

Did my own foolproof casual gamer experiment today- showed the wife all the E3 trailers.

Wants Super Mario 3D World because it looks "cute."

Dat cat suit apparently

Cat suit is one of the most brilliantly alluring things mario games have done recently. If marketed correctly it could be huge. Not even kidding.

One of my more anti-modern Nintendo friends says he wants the game, but won't shell out for the console yet until there's far more on it. It seems to be working

I don't like the idea of timers in 3D Mario either. But timer starts off 500 which is over 8 minutes. So, I don't think it will be too much of a problem when playing the game.

Nintendo said they like idea of people competing in order to complete the levels as fast as possible. That's fine enough, but I'd rather want the worlds to be detailed with a lot of secrets, ratherthan be designed to cater speed runners. All in all, my biggest fear for 3D World at the moment is its multiplayer focus. With local multiplayer only, I will most likely end up playing the game on my own.

As long as the game is going to have a timer, Nintendo is missing a huge opportunity to appeal to speedrunners.

Imagine if the game had online leaderboards for individual levels and even a single leaderboard that added up your times for the whole game. You could literally have the World Record posted to every Mario player. Players like Siglemic could actually compete for THE official Nintendo record.

But, you know, Nintendo and the internet...

Just got back from playing the demo at Best Buy.

Basically the game's this crazy combination of Mario 2, Mario 3, Mario World, and Mario 64.

  • There is a time limit, but you can find clocks that'll give you more time to explore.
  • The cat suit allows you to climb pretty much any wall, allowing for a ton of exploration.
  • The butt stomp is back and it reveals hidden blocks by making them translucent for a second. Almost like a soundwave goes through them.
  • HD goombas look like brown dinner rolls with feet lol.
  • POW blocks are back!
  • In the transparent warp pipes, you can choose which path to take. If you have a fire flower, you can shoot enemies in the pipes to clear better paths.
  • Mario and Luigi lose their hats when they don't have any powerups (mushroom, any suit, etc.)
  • All of the original Mario 2 casts abilities are in the game except for Toad's (because there's no vegetables to pick.) Instead of fast picking, he dashes super fast.
  • In the cat suit, you can just climb up the flagpole for a guaranteed 1up.

Thanks all I can think of, but overall its not just some rehash game. The graphics, level design, and gameplay is very unique and free flowing despite having only one exit. If you have the time, you can freely explore entire levels, which are quite expansive. I'm super looking forward to playing this in a few months.

I can't understand why in the world they removed the analogue control.
It's essential for a game on a 3d plane.
If the digital method was just an option if you didn't have four nunchucks it'd be understandable, but as the only option!?

Sounds good to me.

That and playing as Princess Peach is pretty huge too. It's long overdue, too.

I actually think that's one thing people have missed

Nintendo has done a decent job of getting more playable females in their games this year

Dixie in Donkey Kong
Peach in Super Mario 3D World (and looks like can play her solo as well)
The girl in Wonderful 101 (do they have names?)
And Wii Fit Trainer in Smash Bros

The courses will have a timer if it's going with the 3D Land design.

Why couldn't they have a count up timer? One that simply recorded how long you took but didn't dictate how long you COULD take. That way both people who want to explore and speed run can be satisfied

Out of curiosity I decided to go replay Super Mario Galaxy 2 to see how it held up control wise, and honestly considering all the complaints about 8-way movement in 3D World, I really don't feel that Galaxy 2 is all that different from 3D Land. Maybe it's the octagonal stick but I swear to god it feels like the control snaps to a set direction just like in 3D Land.

I dunno, maybe someone can go through that and either tell me I'm wrong or back me up on this. I seriously remember it being a lot more free than it actually controls upon replaying it, and even so I can't say I care much about it.

Reading through the last page I see there was confusion as to why they chose the blue Toad instead of red. While red Toad is definitely my bro, I think the answer is as simple as this: each player is a color, and you can't have two red bars filling up at the end of each level. Red, Green, Pink, and Blue.
This makes the most sense. Especially with Mario's cat being yellow. Need contrast to make it easier to tell your characters apart.

Anyone else want the veggies back???
Return to Subcon. It's all the fan service I want. We've had Mario 1 and Mario 3 references. Now it's time to go back to the dream world and battle Wart again.

But would people like that kind of game now? And would it translate well to 3D? Or even 2D in a NSMB style? I was hoping they'd do a NEW Super Mario Bros. 2 that was actually SMB2, but then they ended up using the name for another DS sequel. So now the name wouldn't be as clever.

Go to Sarasaland for the next handheld 2D Mario. They need to do something.

Zelda should be playable in the next Zelda

If you want to reach more women, just make female characters who kick ass and aren't oversexualized.

Agreed. I think that the Zelda franchise is one of the few that if you did this, you would not alienate the fanbase. Provided Link was still playable.

Played a level today at Best Buy:

I'm on the fence. I was grouped alongside 3 other people, I used a Wiimote as Toad. The game is very hectic, didn't really gel well initially...so I dunno.

I lied and love 3DLand of the bat and with all of my heart. It's a game that is cohesive and fun.

I can see 3DWorld being fun, but it just felt chaotically amiss.

:0/

that would be good, but as in every Mario game with a timer, you don't really need more seconds than what's being given to you. I strolled around every level in 3D Land and the time was just enough to let you do plenty exploration

You don't know how much I explore in mario games. Sometimes I just leave my game idle in galaxy and listen to the music in the background while I do something else.

It looks like what people have been complaining about the whole time....exploration in a 3D Mario. Except now they've merged that idea into courses that be speedran like SM64 (with multiple characters) as well as just explore, find secrets and have fun.

And you never know they might incorporate a lot of elements from Galaxy into certain courses or worlds, they always do. And the game could turn out as grandiose as either Galaxy.

I'd like to hear more of the soundtrack though, so far not impressed, and the graphics could probably be better and have a fresher artstyle. I'd also like them to perfect the camera and improve depth perception for platforming in a 3D space.

It sounds much more varied than the NSMB series. Didn't hear a single "BWAH BWAH" through the whole thing, which makes it 100% better than any recent Mario soundtrack I've heard.

I also think it would be cool if they incorporated elements in multiplayer from the Mario & Luigi series on DS. Like Double, triple, quad power-ups and attacks as a group. Also the humor from those games would be a nice addition.

I also think introducing a branching upgrade path element for power-ups would be great. Like upgrading your fireball along a branching path (hold X to release huge ball) all the way up to the SSBB type Smash ball fireball upgrade. This could be done for ALL the power-ups, making you choose which paths to go for different playthroughs. As well as Mario's own move set. Why not a double jump upgrade for late game? Why not a sprint boost upgrade for super long jumps? Why not a slide upgrade allowing Mario to speedrun or access areas earlier? Why not a wall jump upgrade to increase the height and distance of the jump. This would allow players to customize their playstyle and options and greatly extend replay value. Why not give Mario the ability to upgrade a Spin Attack from Galaxy/SMW? It would at least make collecting a billion coins relevant....

On the other hand, if they just called it Super Mario World 2 and gave Mario a Cape and Spin attack. Nobody would complain. :P

This game looks great but I still hope we have a "Star" Mario with big levels like 64 and Galaxy 1&2. That's the one I love the most.
It seems to me that Nintendo is trying to establish the 3D series a third type of mainline Mario besides the Super Mario Bros and Mario 64 series. I would be really surprised if there was no Mario game in the 64 series in plans, or even in development, but it's probably two-three years away.

When I played at E3 it was very difficult to tell the difference between the players when all the characters had cat suits. The color differences were a bit too subtle to my eyes.

Was it the background art or maybe the settings on the TV and the show floor lighting? How did it compare to screen shots you've seen?

This game looks pretty awesome and there is no doubt it will be fun playing with friends or siblings. Can't really say much besides that.
