Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | June 2013 | Late Ports and Late Threads

You can listen here.

Not much Vita talk, though. IGN guy begs for more Patapon, and wants more HD collection ports. Shuhei tells him to look forward to more Indie titles.

When asked what's on the horizon after KZ:M and Tearaway, Shuhei offers Freedom Wars and Over My Dead Body 2 as examples of future first-party Vita support (even though there are no plans to localize them at the moment, brilliant...)

Shuhei reiterates Jack Tretton's statement that Sony considers Vita to still be very early in its life cycle, so no price cut planned.

Some hinting at what Sony Bend is up to when Shuhei says they're working on something that's firmly within their specialty (so probably another handheld game I guess). IGN guy hopes it's Syphon Filter Vita, and my mouth waters in agreement.

That's it.

I gave the IGN guys hell for spending as much time onVita as Sony did during that press conference. Of course there was no response.

I don't get it, Sony is literally the only one putting games out for the system and the issue is... we need more of those first party titles? I think the problem is Vita has ZERO support from Capcom, Square-Enix, very little from anyone else (Konami, Namco, Rockstar, you name it). Sony's efforts software-wise would be perfectly fine if third parties didn't abandon the ship before it even sailed. They must have figured it's just way easier to develop games at shitty resolution for the 3DS.
If Sony has a fault, it's the lack of marketing and of agreements with third parties for making them jump on Vita. With keeping the PS3 alive till the very end (something MS and Nintendo never did with the 360 and Wii, terrible way to thank your faithful user base if you ask me) and preparing the ground for PS4 launch AND thinking about Vita's first party support I guess Sony's hands are very full at the moment. There's only a finite number of teams, every one of them is busy in a different project, they're not scratching their bellies.
Blame the poor Japanese third party support on Sony. PSP had oodles of high quality exclusive software stay Japan-only. If it was Nintendo they would've published them abroad.

Gungho wants the 3DS version of Puzzle & Dragons to sell a million copies so there would obviously never be a Vita version.

Like having a Vita version would damage that. So I suppose having an Xbox360 version of Call of Duty damages The PS3's sales? Or that Batman Origins Vita will hurt Batman Origins 3DS?

This is an awful idea. Porting PSP games to PS2/PS3 only hurt PSP as it gave less of a reason to buy a PSP. The same applies here except magnified 100x worse due to Sony using Remote Play as a replacement for native Vita software, meaning if PS4 ports became a trend there would be little reason for even Vita owners to buy the original release.

I covered the first part; it doesn't have to be exactly the same game, they can just make a later game in the series, if they want. Or make things similar to the Killzone and GTA games of PSP; thinks that can use much of the same assets, yet tie into the mythos well. Basically, game that are similar to the Dead Rising Case West / Case Zero / Dead Rising 2 situation.

The point is the Vita doesn't have many console-retail-quality games NOW, and development is focused on more expensive PS4 games. Why not use mid-level development assets to make a Vita version in 2013, and then upgrade the assets for release of improved, "new content! New graphics!" Versions in late 2014/15, and beyond?

Heck, since you already have the Vita-level resources ready, why not release a cross-buy release of the upgrade (or make the upgrade Vita DLC that comes with the purchase of the PS4 version), like Playstation All Stars did, and increase the value of the new product that way?

Remote Play is an important option, but so is Cross-Buy, Cross-Play, Cross-Save, etc. Sony can use any off those to increase value of a release, or to get Vita owners to want to buy a PS4, PS4 owners to want to buy a Vita, PS3 owners to want a Vita, or Vita Owners to want a PS3.

Imagine if "Exclusive PS4 content" between it and Xbox One became 2+Hour Exclusive Vita-playable games? Or how about making a buy of the Vita version, lead to a 10 dollar discount of the later PS4 Digital Version, similar to a PS+ user discount?

I really think the biggest enemy of the Vita, ATM, is that it's basically equal to developing for an HD system. If any company is going to make a game that expensive, why not make it on install bases that are bigger, and promise more ROI? 3DS (and PSP) don't have this issue, as you can make cheaper-to-develop games, and for a much larger audience.

But, if you think this idea is bad, what would you do to get retail-quality exclusives, timed or otherwise, onto the Vita?

Question on game updates:

I have PS+ and set to auto download updates, but once they are downloaded I can't find anything where you can see what is in the update. If you hit the update button or load the game it just installs the update. Any ideas?

If you're about to delete a game bubble of an updated game, normally it simply has "Delete" and "information". However, if the game has been updated, it adds an "Update history" tab, which you can click to read update history.

You might have to apply the update before this history comes up, now sure.

Killzone Liberation and Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier (PSP) are on sale for like nothing in EU.

Btw, am I the only one who can't access the EU PSN store on Vita? It gives me an error.

Just tried it and cheers that is awesome, was worried I was going to miss out on new features.

Is that Jak & Daxter game decent then?

Picked up a couple of PSP games last week and I know there are more going on sale next week, but tempted by that too.

Just picked my first PSP game of for Vita with Jak & Daxter. It's pixelated but that's what you can expect on the larger Vita screen I guess. Can't I can't camera rotation from the shoulder buttons to the right analog stick? I thought that was standard for all PSP games?

Touch and hold the screen to open the emulator options. You have three different options for mapping the right analog stick.

I got the game thanks to this sale and currently am 60% done with it.

The game is decent and tons of fun, though it's flawed with some of its game design and it's not as polished as other Jak and Daxter games. It's the kind of relaxing game where you can die as much as you want without any penalty, save wherever you like and the game not being very challenging but engaging because it's varied and it has nice puzzles and things to collect, you have a story to follow with likeable characters, side quests to do, eco powers to improve and tinker with your aircrafts. These eco powers are used for puzzles and fights and you also make Jak stronger kind of in a light RPG way. You can play with a monster Dexter in special sections that are few and far between. I'm impressed that the game has different continents to go through and how you feel like you have a lot of freedom, I'm not sure if other Jak and Daxter have this (didn't play with them a lot). Graphically it also looks pretty impressive for a PSP game but sadly it's more pixelated and blown up on the Vita. You have sections where you use your aircraft, kill others and steal parts of them. It's done decent enough and it's a big part of the game.

It's the ideal game to play when you come home from work and you don't want to stress about. Don't expect it to be an amazing game or try to compare it with the 3 Jak and Daxter games. It's just a good enough game on its own and its price is as cheap as playstation mobile games, and surely it's worth more than playstation mobile games. Definitely give it a go at that price, you can't go wrong with it.

I started writing this but kind of ran out of time - if anyone wants to make a "Vita has games thread / upcoming Vita games" then feel free to use this as a base:

Great, thanks for the write up, will grab it next week.

So PISSED that stuff like the tales games aren't localized. I don't even need them to be voiced in English, just translate the text and give me some fucking english subtitles.

Those are the types of games are why I bought the thing in the first place.

Same, I agree. A couple Tales games (albeit remakes or whatever) exclusively on Vita would really help push Vita sales. Most Vita owners I know are either heavily into RPGs or at least can enjoy them. Plus, more quality games launched globally = better.

Sony lost the ball, even if we are not talking about type-0, they didn't bother with Over My Dead Body PSP remake before it(and this is a SCEJ game).

I think it's clear that the problem is SCEJ think monhun clones strategy and no other genre is the solution and SCEE think the small indies games (that no one care about) are the cure, and both are completely clueless and wrong and that what killed the Vita.

I've asked about this before but never got an answer:

Is it safe to use the vita charger to charge my smartphone(samsung nexus)? It didn't come with a separate charger and I rather not buy one. Going on a trip next week so would really appreciate it if someone could advice me on this :)

Kinda sad but it is actually true for current Japanese... (not that I dislike that genre).
While I say RPGs are still popular genre in Japan, it isn’t necessary the case for developers. I’m just making this from my ass but if Soul Sacrifice was an RPG then I don’t think a gory, macabre and gruesome game developed by Marvelous would have sold over 200K (it may be already 250K but not so sure) copies in 2 - 3 months. Also, a guy from Bamco said that God Eater Burst has reached 700K, thanks to the budget release. That’s how effective the genre is in Japan.
That said, I still wish Japanese devs release more RPGS. Actually at this point I’ll be happy if they release a fully-budgeted JRPG on ANY platform :(

Shinovi DX get! Not pictured: Fifth figure on the far right, CDs, and the collectible card.
I figured I'd wait a few months for the price of the game to drop, only to see it..stay pretty much full-price, so in hind sight I probably should have just gotten the DX bundle at launch.

Resale "value" on eBay is crazy. An auction for a used one ended recently for $169, although a few were price-dropped to $148.
By comparison, I purchased mine from Yahoo Auctions Japan using Japonica Market as a middleman (which I'd highly recommend).
Total Cost: 5050 Yen + 700 Yen Domestic Shipping + 700 Yen Commission + 1860 Yen EMS Shipping + 358 Yen Paypal Fees = 8668 Yen, or roughly $86-92 ($90) depending on fluctuation.

I use my vita charger for my iPhone and nexus 7.

The software overlap between PS3 and PS4 is almost nonexistent (maybe PS1 and PS2 games from PSN?? they haven't said anything about that) so the chances of the PS3 and PS4 sharing the same pool of activations are pretty low. But man that would suck if it were to happen.

It's worse in the beginning, when they cram a lot of it.

Yea I just went in the span of 5 minutes: using the touch screen to open a lock, using touch to open a gate, rotating using the rear touch and cleaning using front touch, to rubbing charcoal, to rotating another item. So incredibly annoying

And the shooting feels worse than U3.

So, after the initial disappointment after the E3(I was hoping for new big exclusive title) I thought about the future:
The rest of 2013 is actually pretty packed for me.
I'm gonna get:
Rayman Legends
Tearaway
Killzone Mercenary
Jak&Daxter HD Collection
FFX/X-2 HD
GodOfWar 1/2 HD
Flower
Hotline Miami
Fieldrunners 2
Abes Odyssey New'n Tasty
TheWalkingDead

Probably gonna get:
Batman Arkham Origins
Dead Nation
Starlight Inception
Cloudberry Kingdom
Counterspy
Terraria
Runner2
FEZ
Spelunky

I have actually never played Jak 1-3, GoW 1and2, TWD, Flower, FFX/-2 or any other of those listed games.
All those games are new to me.

But of course I'm still hoping for GTA Vita, SoulCalibur Vita, Monsterhunter Vita, SSX Vita, Burnout Vita, NFS Underground 1/2 HD. And I hope that BENDs next project is on Vita.

Holy shit - you can still get these? >_> Hggnnghhhhh I've been wanting to import this and I might just cave and go ALL OUT on this.

Starlight should hit beta next month :) will report when it does!

NICE! Did they post a new gameplay vid? I thought they were going to soon?

I found (so far) the touch to climb, while not engaging at all, very useful in certain situations where Drake has a hard time figuring out where you want him to go using traditional controls.

And I hope there is a sale on stardust delta soon, I've been playing the psp version and the lack of true 2nd analog support and cumbersome online functions make me want the slicker vita version.

Guys, I have collected all these videos of PSVita's E3 on a spanish forum. I don't know if this is spam (if it's against the rules I delete the link asap).

There's nothing new, but everything is gathered in one thread, so will probably interest some of you.

Jak and Daxter's framerate looks rock solid:

http://youtu.be/OJnJazMu8RI

That was my main concern. I can't tell if it's the game being really old, or if lots of graphics were sacrificed to keep the framerate solid.

Holy shit - you can still get these? >_> Hggnnghhhhh I've been wanting to import this and I might just cave and go ALL OUT on this.

Yes! Used. I was annoyed that the resale value of a used JPN copy is still $60 -minimum- and only $30 more for the DX bundle was hard not to go for.

You won't be finding them on eBay cheaply, but take a look at Yahoo Auctions Japan:
http://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/
(note: Search the Hapanese name, 'shinovi' by itself finds limited results).

You can sometimes find used bundles ending for around 5000 yen ($50). Using a middleman service you'll be paying the domestic shipping ($7 in my case), EMS shipping ($18), a service fee (~$7) and a few bucks in paypal fees (~$3). So roughly $35 in fees after the end price.

The Middleman I used was Japonica Market. I was looking for one that took Paypal and that my deposit wouldn't be permanently stuck with them. Japonica refunds you if you lose the auction, but you do have to pay a deposit of your max bid upfront (in my case, 7000 yen). All you have to do is fill out their form and email it to them, and they'll send you a paypal invoice to pay off. Couldn't be simpler.

But as said you should search the Japanese name for the most results, then filter by ending soonest. Another thing to keep in mind is to be very cautious and use photos as a guide. One of the listings on eBay is for /just the bonuses/ without the game itself, and if there was a similar listing on YHJ, you might not be able to figure that out through google translate.

The full bundle is the game itself (L.E. artwork), the five figures, the two CDs, and a trading card (a part of the bundle which is often glossed over/unmentioned), so look for one where everything is in the photo so you know for a fact you're getting everything. There's also the preorder artbook I passed on but if you can find one with it for a similar price, it looks fantastic.

For anybody that does get the bundle: THIS case. It took me a lot of searching to find it, but this case is the -perfect- fit, you can see most of it in my photo. Or this photo, the one that sent me on the search for it.

So I have never played any Jak and Daxter games, and the video posted above looks pretty stable, should I grab this for on the go or should I save $15 and grab it on the PS3? Or is there any benefit to the Ps3 version?

Also what should I expect from these games?

I don't see how what you've said wouldn't affect the Vita's sales in a negative way. You're still taking exclusive content and porting it to a home console and I'm far from convinced that things like Cross Buy are system sellers. As well, the whole reusing console assets to make a Vita game is exactly how Sony pitched the platform to third parties and only Ubisoft bit with Liberation.

Vita's biggest enemy is Sony, and they'll have to pay for real third party support.

So far the best seller of Vita have been IGC from PSN+. With PSN+ becoming mandatory on PS4 there will be increased amount of people who have vita games before they even have PSV :) So in that sense PS4 is really going to push adaption ratio imho.
