Angry Joe: Major Nelson Interview (Xbox One) E3 2013

Good interview, Joe asked some important questions and Larry came off pretty bad there especially when responding to some legitimate concerns regarding DRM.

Wow, the pr ladies in the background just told him to go to a next question when MN was struggling to answer one.. Good job going in with the hard questions AJ.

Most awkward shit ever. This whole Xbone situation has been a hell of a confusing storm.

Watching part 2 now. Part 1 was hard to watch at times and wish he could have pushed the rest of his questions.

Joe, you did well enough considering the circumstances and Major Nelson was kind of enough to do it (even if cut off too soon) so props to him too.

@08:12 "MJ - You have to admit Joe that the world is moving digital and online".
Yup, but disc-based game aren't digital. Don't enforce digital policies (Digital Rights Management) on them. Consumers didn't ask for that.
Give people good reasons to buy digital copy like low prices, sales like steam etc if you want them to embrace DRM.

Great interview. Less hostile than the Jeff one, but still you dont let him off easy.
Submit this as your application to some of the big websites dude.

Angry Joe is now a Gaffer. I wouldn't be surprised if he made a appearance in this thread to answer some questions you guys might have.

Also holy shit at that spin by Nelson at 7minutes when he is saying its not limited lol.

He also stated that a used game can only be passed on once..........

Keep digging.
Correct - so we actually learned two things:

-Used game can only be given to a friend once and this friend is stuck with the game
-Only one person in a "Family" can play a game at a given time - no concurrent usage as many had hoped

Major Nelson seemed to flat out state that only one person can play a shared game at the time.

The important thing is he airquoted the word "family" meaning you can share your library with 10 other people but only one can play at a time.

PR Death Stare really getting to Joe in that video, I had to laugh a little. I can only imagine what looked like behind the camera.

Good shit on the interview. Making folks squirm with good questions are so nice.

Can't watch. What, if anything, is said about family share? Any clarification on how it will work? Restrictions?

Yeah, from my understanding he said it's like a library -- only one person can "grab" a game at a time.

...Still, how that is done, and how you "return" the game to the library, who knows. But it seemed pretty conclusive that you can't have two people playing at the same time. However, he did mention something about how it would be possible if the game is split screen (which doesn't quite make sense to me, so we'll see).

Overall -- we are back where we started. There's still a ton of conflicting information out there.

Good interview.

Yeah major nelson stated many of his answers with PR twist/terms but that's his job.

Overall, it still seems to me that Xbox is giving more people options to share digitally than physically while it's vice versa for the PS4.

Sony would never allow a family plan similar to what's (supposedly) coming on to the Xbox One. The PS4 is already opened as it is when it comes to physical discs. The Xbox One could do things like the family share plan because of its restrictions on discs.

If the PS4 had the family plan ON TOP of not having any restrictions on games on discs, then things would be too opened. Keeping things the way they are now with discs + the family plan = a ton of people sharing/pirating games instead of buying them. Publishers wouldn't support the PS4 at all if that happened.

The Xbox One could drop the DRM issues but if they did, the family plan would have to go (for the same exact reasons I stated above).

But yeah, it seems like this next gen is physical (PS4) vs. digital (Xbox One). Choose what's best for you and then go from there.

Or, if you want all of the games, get both. :)

he compared it to a bookshelf. one guy takes a book out reads it and when he's done he puts it back in and somebody else can take it out. pretty clear that only one person at the time can play a game.

You thin EA or Activision would want people to buy 1 copy of Battlefield or CoD to basically play forever instead of the 2 they are buying now? It sounds too good to be true, and frankly I don't know why people are assuming it will work like that. And even if it did by default, I'm sure publishers will place restrictions where it makes sense, like limit it to certain parts of the game or for a certain period of time. Unrestricted access would go against everything Microsoft is trying to accomplish with their DRM.

That was great.

So that Family Sharing thingy isn't even good since only person can play a game at a time. SHOCKING NEWS.

Here's where the shit is going to fly if this holds true. MSFT will limit MP games to just 1 user and SP games to 2 concurrent. This is so unnecessary it isn't even funny. I'd rather just have every one buy the game and enjoy it like they do now on PS3/360.

If anything, this creates a potential shit storm if there's conflicts between who in the family plan get to play the games and it is not known whether or not this pertains to something like CoD as Joe mentioned.

I don't think Activision wants you to share a free copy of CoD Ghosts for free between 10 people (2 of which are concurrent in SINGLE PLAYER - As Joe noted). So confusing in the end because there are more bad things about this than good.

I really can't believe how bad Microsoft has been with their messaging. They might as well just hide and not do any interviews until they can get their company line together.

I sort of respect Larry for giving 10 minutes to him though. Even if it's a lot of spin and non-answers. It's still a pretty hostile interview.

We're assuming it because other MS PR guys have implied it did work that way.

When it was first announced I thought it would obviously be only one person at a time but then we got all this conflicting information.

Yeah, this is something that I didn't understand either.

You can't play at the same time but you can play something similar to split screen (but with both people playing on their own TVs)?

It's contradicting. Needs to be more clear. Hopefully that blog coming next week will have a better answer for this.

So yeah, I wouldn't say that he confirmed anything about that topic yet.

Joe, could you clarify what you meant by one person having Gold allows for online play for all accounts on Xbone.....

It doesn't seem right but has that been confirmed? I would think that they would have to be in your family plan to enable that no?

I'm pretty much convinced that Microsoft has NO idea how this will actually work.

He let him talk too much.

Yeah Joe notice that he was just talking nonsense to spin the answer into usual PR crap that don't really relate to what he asked. he rolled his eyes on one that he cut him off. Those handlers seem to make the interview like a delicate game of balance. If joe was overly nice like that red head girl he probably could have talked for 30minutes. If he was harder he probably wouldn't have lasted past the first question.

I actually like AJ much more after this, seeing him in a fast paced, unscripted and pretty damn stressful setting makes him come out much more genuine. And i feel sorry for him, MajorNelson is usually pretty cool, but he was pretty fucking condescending at times and seeing your beloved brand turn to shit with even the friendliest PR people act like that seems sad.

Check this follow up video, Joe has more info about the family pack.

Says he later found out that Larry was slight mistaken, it is 2 people at the same time. But when 2 people are playing at the same time its for singleplayer only. Also the other 8 people are not locked out from playing other games in the shared library. DLC is also shared.

LOL at the question please explain how the cloud works

"It's like more transistors in the cloud"

LOL, love the guy.

Put a person of authority in front of these so called "voice of the angry people" and they shrivel up like a scared turtle.

Nope, I think he was just trying to be polite, which is the problem with most interviews TBH when it comes to the bullshit of the Xbone.

Just got to that part, what to think? So weird...

Did Major Nelson seriously say that it isn't simple to change the 24 hour online check to something a lot longer or even get rid of it altogether? That has to be all of like one line of code.

:lol. You've always been on the MS train for some reason. Nelson just shows he doesn't really know shit there.

In his interview discussion video AJ says he learned that two people can play at the same time(for single player at least). So many mixed messages.

So wait...it's 2 people at the same time only for singleplayer content?

What?

I swear it seems like they really are just making this up as they go along.

I'd advise on ignoring XB right now and sticking with 360. There is so much BS and little details to deal with and MSFT execs have been doing nothing but backpedaling. I appreciate the chance that MJ gave Joe but it was so rushed and MJ was on the ropes a few times and just moved on from one particular question. How can you sit there and bastion how MSFT is handling Xbone?

Games don't fix all the BS and red tape involved with Xbone.
