Sorry, but this is an indefensible position.

Just sit back and listen.

(and watch the whistle register too...they're both great vocal analyses)

I think 10:18 (the section on musical phrasing) in the first video is most relevant for this discussion.

And yeah, those singers mentioned aren't as talented. One might be able to make an argument for overall musicianship, but she'd still be a better singer and have a better voice.

Mariah doesn't even look that white. If she was some random girl and I didn't know her background I would have guessed she was Hispanic.

Really? That's a very pale Hispanic woman.

I love how everyone assumes her super curly locks were any more natural than her pin-straight hair. Her early curls were distinct, but that perm style was something even White singers recreated. If anything, her natural texture is somewhere in between.

Clearly, this is nothing like the early 90s Mariah hair people wrongly assume was natural just because it's the hairstyle with which she started her career:

She got a nose job, a boob job, and she constantly dyes her hair blonde.

I wouldn't be surprised if she bleached her skin as well.

... But weren't you just saying a day ago that her cunning plan is to start claiming she's black in order to appeal to black audiences? But now you're essentially arguing that she's trying to look white. Your argument doesn't seem very ... coherent.

Yeah, and that's the game she's playing. She can look white to appeal to white audiences, and claim a black identity to appeal to black audiences. Thanks to the One Drop Rule, Mariah can be black no matter how white she looks.

But wouldn't trying to look white while claiming a black identity be offensive particularly to black audiences? And why would she need to do this when other talented artists have shown that it is perfectly possible to be black and at the pinnacle of the industry?

Nope. Just look at Michael Jackson. Black people defended his self-hating shit for years.

I'm not too sure of that. Most "black" female singers tend to trend towards the lighter side of the spectrum. In terms of film, the roles for black women of darker shade appears to be few and far between.

... But didn't he actually have vitiligo? And isn't one thing that people with this do is to subsequently lighten their skin so that it doesn't appear splotchy?

Oh, sure. But they're still black women, right. Do they not count because they're relatively lighter?

People still supported Michael Jackson because he continued to identify as black. Also, his skin lightening seemed to be the product of 1) his rumored battle with vitiligo, and; 2) some deep-seated psychological issues brought on by his rather traumatic childhood.

If you want an example of a celebrity who consciously manipulates their racial appearance for monetary and career gain, look no further than Beyonce Knowles.

I don't believe that he did, I think he just used it as an excuse to make himself look like a white person, or some twisted approximation of one. I mean vitiligo didn't cause you to get repeated nose, eye, and lip surgeries.

Just compare old Michael to new Michael. It was pretty obvious what he was doing to himself.

Of course they count. I just noticed that lighter women have a pretty significant advantage over darker women in the entertainment industry.

Michael 100% had vitiligo(the autopsy report confirmed it and so do pics of him). He also had lupus.

I guess he did further surgeries to simply make his features match his new skin colour. But he could have also done the nose jobs to be able to hit higher notes (most of his brothers/sister did this too)

Well, he definitely had the vitiligo. The rest of it was probably just what royalan said - deep-seated psychological issues and body image issues.

Oh, okay. It just seemed like you were goal-post moving; when I bring up that black women can be succesful, your response was essentially, "But they're light-skinned!"

Colorism is most certainly real though, sure.

He also went out of his way to have white children when he comes from a pretty black family. I think that speaks volumes. Dude clearly hated looking like a black guy, and black folks continue to defend his self-hating arse to this day.

Shut the fuck up.

I'm not understanding the "full retard" references in this thread.Just because of Robert Downy's character lines in the movie or is Mariah Carey being called a retard for trying to play a slave?

Blanket is 1/2 black. He coulda got a sperm donor for him, but used his own instead.

I don't believe that. Her hair is naturally curly when wet without processing. Her hair looks wavy as a result of processing (brushing and other manipulation). Her hair texture isn't unique.

Robert Downy Jr is a white actor who played a black character. Someone is drawing a parallel to that situation with this one. You're over-thinking it, I think.

correction, robert downy jr is a white actor who played a white actor playing a black character.

Watched this film yesterday. It was terrible. It tried way to hard and it was ridiculous how much of a "60s experience" the family had.

There was a new tawdry documentary that aired in the UK a couple of weeks ago detailing the findings from Jackson's autopsy. It confirmed that he did indeed have vitiligo, but also that he used a bleaching cream called Benoquin for many years to stop healthy areas of skin from producing pigment. No one knows why, though.

The show also revealed that he was almost entirely bald and had been wearing wigs glued to the remnants of his natural hair for 25 years, since the infamous Pepsi fire incident.

Not at all, depending on how far north you go in Mexico, people get pretty damn pale by comparison. My mother's side of the family all have very pale complexions.
Indeed. I know a couple of pale blond haired, blue eyed Cubans. Also a pale freckled red headed Peruvian..rest of her family is dark as shit.
The color argument is stupid. I'm in the "middle" when it comes to skin tone in my family. My oldest brother is very dark..second oldest is lighter than me.
