Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

I'd love to believe it, but I just can't see it. They've got the whole 3D Mario team on this. The same team that was used in 3D Land. I just don't see them going back now. We're far more likely to get a 3D World 2, I'd guess.

A real shame, but I'll just have to deal.

Watching that video has probably sold me on the game more than anything so far. Watching someone "enjoy" the game how its meant to be played really made the level shine better than these trailers have. I even played the game at BB but with 3 other players, it was just a frantic mess. Still fun but I couldnt look at the games finer details like climibing up that wall and hitting a secret box that was nifty.

You really think so? I feel like after 2 galaxy's and 2 3D Mario's they will have no choice but to give this take on Mario an end and move on to some thing else even if its a remake or something.
 
I hope there are at least a few levels like that per world that have a ton to just find and enjoy. Even if they're useless, finding secret coins, one ups, and power-ups in a genuine blast. Seeing a level filled to the brim with all these goodies has me ecstatic, it just looks like a wonderful playground for Mario to explore.

Seems the game requires some communication or teamwork from others for it to be fully enjoyed.

It can be played competitively, or co-op. In some of them videos, people seem to be doing neither and just go their own way.

Im sure the experience will be better at home playing with people you know.
 
Does anyone find the overuse of the white smoke trail a bit annoying. Form pictures (below) it looks fine but when watching the gameplay videos every time the character is moving they leave a big trail of white smoke behind them, and it feels overdone and really distracting.

Ehh, it is supposed to be an indicator at what speed you are going at.

3D Land (and the demo levels of 3D World) are absolutely littered with extra time bonuses, partially as a reward for exploration. If you're running around the level to find secrets, you'll be rewarded with extra time.

3D Land was also extremely generous with its timers in the first half of the game, for whatever that's worth.
 
I'm not afraid of running out of time, but I do think an count-upper would be better than a count-downer. I assume the clocks you pick up affect your speedrun times, right? I'd much rather have a pure speedrun based on how long it actually took than one that revolves around how long you took to do the level and grab all the clocks. I don't want to feel like I have to grab all the clocks running through.

Then again, I love The Mercenaries in Resident Evil, so I'm a huge hypocrite.

Nope, the game just tracks how long you took to beat the level, not how much time was remaining.

Maybe its to limit how much u can explore in each play through. If there are a lot of secret areas, this adds in difficulty while coming back for the rest of the green stars. Also for the first run(assuming there's a 2nd harder playthrough), it puts a little pinch on newbies so they can become a little faster playing the game.

Man. Fuck Best Buy. I stopped at one yesterday to see if I could get my hands on the demo, but nope.

- They only had enough controllers hooked up for 2 players instead of 4.
- They permitted every pair of players a 15-minute block of time instead of just a run through one level. C'mon, you're supposed to take one game and then get back to the end of the line. Aren't people aware of arcade etiquette these days?!

So if my friend and I wanted a go, we would have had to sit through a 2.5 hour wait. We had other places to be, so that wasn't gonna happen. There weren't nearly enough people there to justify a wait that long!
 
I've been thinking... I'm excited for this game. Now. At the reveal I was hesitant. I think the developer direct did a lot to change my mind + the hands on reviews. But anyway, that's totally not what I was going to talk about.

It makes no sense that Nintendo made this game. How can you go from SMG2 with just so much genius creativity leaking out of every orifice to a sequel to a 3DS game? It's madness. They must be making another 3D Mario. An original Wii U 3D Mario. If we don't see footage of the next 3D Mario by E3 next year I would be shocked.

I bought this system for a lot of potential games but mainly for the single player experiences of HD Zelda and HD 3D Mario and I know I'm not alone. Nintendo has to realize this isn't what gamers bought a Wii U for. Nintendo better not disappoint or else I'll complain about it on GAF or something. Mark my words.

A sequel to a 3DS game that seems to have a lot of creativity.

I do think we'll get another 3D Mario game for the Wii U, but I hope it is different from the Galaxy games, SM64/Sunshin, and 3D Land/3D World.

All of this wishful thinking saying this isn't a "proper" 3D Mario is really getting to me.

It's not so much that it's not a "proper" 3D Mario, but that it's not new. It's a sequel in a new franchise. It feels like when the single player NSMB for DS became multiplayer and went to the Wii. Now we have the single player 3D Land going to the Wii U to become the multiplayer 3D World. Every time there was an addition to the 3D Mario series Nintendo would do something unexpected and amazing and, quite often, mind blowing. I expected to be wowed again and wasn't, which makes me sad.

But hey, I'm buying this game for sure. I love Mario platformers and I love multiplayer. I took a break from NSMBU to reply to this. I'm going to have a blast playing this with friends. But I just wish we got this game AND the heir to the SMG2 legacy, though not in the same Galaxy style. It's a new console and I'm ready for a new Mario. It looks like I have a bit longer to wait.

I get what you are saying, but it's strange for you to be this critical when the game isn't even out. Would it be nice for them to put all the new ideas from this game into a completely re-imagined 3D Mario? I guess. But that doesn't diminish this game.

Also, I'd rather take SM 3D World plus the new Monolith Soft game, which is being localized rather quickly by all accounts than have a repeat of the Xenoblade debacle.

If you are patient, Nintendo will not do you wrong with games.... unless you've been to all the Bayo2 threads ;)
 
The thing I love about Mario Platformers is it's all about the level design. If the level design is good, the game is good. Story just doesn't matter.

Bowser steals peach, you go on a crazy adventure. BAM...done!

If the levels are as cleverly designed as SM3DL was, then this will be fantastic. Plus playable Peach makes this even better.

I agree.
Even in Galaxy, that blowed my mind at first sight because of the artstyle and because of the gravity trick, the amazing part was the level design, the joy to play on those levels. In fact, I preferred Galaxy2, because it has (to me) better level design ideas and concepts (and variety, thanks also to Yoshi) even if the first Galaxy was obviously better in terms of background and dynamics new approaches.

I think it does look great but I think my issue with it thus far is that it kind of diminishes Super Mario Land 3D. That is hands down my favorite 3D Mario ever behind Galaxy 2 so it's a tad dissapointing that a suped up HD version is stealing its thunder.

The last wave of proper Nintendo developed home console games was in 2010. Afterwards they were some late localisations of games that were also ultimately 2010 productions.
Now it's 2013. And we'll get some late Pikmin that was unable to shake off it's last gen feeling and the most underwhelming 3D Mario to date. How much patience do you expect from people exactly? Another 3 years of ,,Wait for the next Direct/conference/investor meeting!!!1''?

Sure, this game looks fun. Anyone can tell you that they gonna make some fun levels, but that's not the point. This game is simply way under this series' standards, no matter how much ,,fun'' the stages gonna be - as absurd as it sounds. Iwata/Nintendo look completely clueless when it comes to this console, it's a machine without any ambition. For the first time, we solely get leftovers from last gen and why did we need the overpriced gamepad again? Now even one of their best teams only gives us nothing but some quick rehash that could have easily been some DLC pack for the 3DS at first. 3D Land isn't that old, how long can this game be in development really - a year, maybe a year and a half? The mainline Mario games represented the console, they were usually milestones perfectly suited for each platform. Now we get some map pack for the fundament originally used for the 3DS not too long ago, instead of the WiiU showcase title that is needed to lessen the (rightfully) poor reception of the console.
Funny thing is, the console is already dead because some by-the-numbers Mario and karaoke didn't work. Now after another year of nothing, they can do no better than repeating the same exact thing again at christmas (karaoke simply replaced by Wii Fit no one wants anymore), but this time they even drag some of their best teams in the mud? Because of this, I really couldn't care less of how good the levels are gonna be in the end. This game simply marks the absolute lowpoint of modern Nintendo and really shows that Iwata and all of his underlings need to be replaced asap. Knowledge of how to handle a handheld in Japan isn't enough anymore. Just keep him for his shows and whatnot and no one would give a shit anyway.

Well obviously that's not the case this time around, unless the Mushroom Kingdom Cloning Initiative came to fruition or something.
 
I mean, I'm not going to lie, I'd prefer the "Epic Mario" (for lack of a better term) to a console 3D Land, but if the game's good, well, whatever. Ultimately I want to play games more than I care about being hyped for them and if level design wows me, then that's fine for me.

But the design of this 4 player game was created for kids. It's released for Christmas. It has Peach as a playable character, cats, big dinosaurs...

What game will be more appealing to kids than that Mario (party)? None.

Kids deserve this Nintendo as much as we do.

It's made for people who don't like killing shit all the time. In other words, for kids and mature adults.
 
Add me to the pile of supporters for the theory that a traditional 3D Mario is coming but is not yet ready. 3D World is a nice little morsel to whet your appetites that Nintendo is bringing out fast because Wii U panic mode. In no way that is something bad! (I haven't played 3D land and I really look forward to 3D world!) But a 3D Mario IS in the pipeline, it just goes against Nintendo to not do so, it just wasn't ready for 2013 prime time.

And said 3D Mario in the pipeline is this game. You should play 3D Land. My favourite game on the 3DS and I feel is tied with SM64 and right behind the Galaxy games as the best 3D Mario games.

Nintendo didn't know how badly the Wii U was going to sell back in 2011 when they started this game.
 
I think you guys hoping for a quick turnaround to the next 3D Mario are going to be disappointed.

Everything about 3D World indicates a focus change, not a quickie port/rushjob made by a side team.

I'm amazed people still think that this will be 3D Land but in HD. People think that the developers will utilize the power of a home console to properly expand the game. I'm afraid when it comes out that even if it's as good as Galaxy people will have already made up their minds about the game.
