Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS: Info Collection - Dojo, Mega Man and Trailer! 2014!

May 10, 2006 - Aug 1, 2007.
So that would be 1 year, 2 months, 21 days.

I hope to see new characters on next Nintendo Direct, but I wouldn't get my hope high.

Whoa, was it really that long?

Truth be told, I totally forgot that...in my mind, I recall Smash being revealed in 2007, and releasing in 2008. Forgot there was a year-long gap.

Diminishing Returns: The Game. A clear improvement, but damn do Brawl's character models hold up very, very well in a side-by-side comparison.

I wonder if this one's going to mirror Brawl's schedule, given that we already have daily updates (of a sort, anyway). The Wii didn't really need any publicity to stay in the public eye, but a steady stream of Smash Bros. info might be healthy for the console.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw the brawl character models. This was during my "I can't believe Nintendo didn't go to HD" phase.

I'm just glad that, after three games, they finally made DK's fur look like fur.

In all three games where he stars in, he looks like an actual ape just because of the emphasis on fur (Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, and Smash). I don't know how it took so long to happen when Jungle Beat had the best model ever for him and that was in 04 - 05.

The lighting and colors in Smash 4 >>>>>>>>>> everything else easily though.

Pikachu looks really good too.

Like, he looks like a weird dog in Brawl comparing him to the super-cute Smash 4 model...but I've always preferred the thinner, anime look though.

Yeah, he look so adorable in SSB4.

I'm at #40 for Prediction Contest in term of leaderboard and statistics. Honestly, I DIDN'T expect that it would be a lot of work. Right now I can say this, I'm not looking forward to do Neiteio and his 110 characters. I'm still debating if I should including DLC character or not.

Don't.
Sakurai mentioned he doesn't want to deal with DLC at least not untill the games are out.

Pokey is definitely the most evil thing in the Nintendo stable. Especially after Mother 3.

Dimentio would like a word. I think that manipulating dozens of people so that you can destroy the multiverse and recreate it in your own image is up there in regards to evilness. Throw in the fact he likely wrote the Prognosticus solely to watch people slaughter each other over it and you've got the most evil Nintendo character.

Would it have made more sense to have version-exclusive brawlers?
That way we could get more fighters like Dillon, Chrom, and Phoenix Wright in the 3DS version and Wonder-Eyes Red, Chase McCain (hey, anything's possible), and Little Mac in the Wii U version.

It would also give more incentive to buy both versions.

And am I the only one who wants Bowser to use his Strikers design as an alternate?

Side by side it's much easier for me to say that I vastly prefer the new visual style with the pastel colours. Bowser, Samus, Mario (in some shots), Kirby, and Pikachu look especially great to me. It is a shame these appear to be (mostly) edits of the the Brawl models, but I suppose improvements may be made with time.

On that note, was there a noticeable improvement in Brawl between the start of the Dojo and the final build? I wasn't around online so much at that time.

What do you mean by edits of the Brawl models?

Sounds neat, but the drawback to that is that if you grew attached to a specific character not available in the other version, you might have just wished the rosters were the same.

Also, the engine is probably the same and the graphics close enough.. If having exclusive characters was on the table, surely it would get to a point where someone would say 'hey, it's so easy, why not just put the same rosters in both games?'

If the game came out some time later, and was decidedly different all around, an entire new cast would make sense. Developing them side by side with similar release windows mean it's basically the same game.

Ideally, I think I'd like them to be separate games entirely and like you, would prefer different rosters.. They've already done so for stages.

I mean that they've Brawl models and put higher-resolution/different textures on them.

I think Link, Star Fox, and Mario stand out the most.

Maybe they're just using the same designs and I'm getting thrown off.

I'm inclined to believe that they're new models. Kirby is a bit of a giveaway, looking at how "round" he is, versus the Brawl version which has noticeable polygons.

Pikachu and Bowser have different models altogether.

Here's a second batch of comparisons. I would have played in Smashville for more of them for a more authentic replication, but I figured it would be a moot point since my Smashville is already dark compared to the the daytime official images. Here is the first batch for those who may have missed it.

This is seriously cool. Please keep it up. Your comparisons made me realize how much of an improvement Kirby actually went through. Not just him, though--they all look great.

Yeah, definitely Kirby, Metroid, Bowser, and Pikachu are new.

I dunno, maybe I am crazy. These just look so similar to me, but again maybe the similar designs/animations are throwing me off.

EDIT: I can see Link's sheath is a little different.

Aside from the obvious colour changes, they seem to have made the models and clothing a lot more... I want to say iconographic in design, rather than trying to get really down on the details.

I'm impressed how 4 Link's chain-mail is clearly separate from the shirt, while in Brawl it's just a texture change.

They look a lot more like detailed, shiny new figurines fitting the toy motif I guess?

They need to make Smash Brothers character figures irl.

Seeing brawl link and smash 4 link side by side certainly is something. Great improvement.

Also I Never noticed that brawl Mario was THAT dull.

Now that you mention it...

They do look a lot alike. Especially Link.

Yeah Link's clothing is a lot more pronounced. Look at the stiching as well. He also looks like he has some muscles in his arm this time around and his hair looks a lot better. His hair looked really greasy in Brawl.

Also I Never noticed that brawl Mario was THAT dull.

It was a nice experiment though, wasn't it? I mean, they managed to successfully introduce a gritty Mario design and have people like it. Let alone that it was for what is one of their biggest titles of the generation. I prefer SSB4 art style on itself, but it being different than Brawl's is a huge plus. I mean, if Brawl was like that, seeing this would have less impact.

I suspect we'll get a Pit shot today, likely from the 3DS version. I'm eager to see alts... I wonder if they'll reveal any through PotDs.

Huh, the art style does look like statuettes come to life. It's a good motif.

The comparison shots are great, are there any for the DS version?

I know that it'll never happen, but I wish we could get *one* game in the style of the promotional art from the first game.

That being said, SSB4 is really impressive in terms of art direction - I love it.

Actually it looks like they're keeping a lot of the same details, but since they're not running at a higher resolution they can render them much more subtly.

Look at Link's Tunic or Mario's overalls, there's still a texture of fabric and detailing of the seams, but it's a lot more subtle now.

If this Smash Bros. Link Design is the one they're using for the next Zelda I think we can say that Smash Bros. art style follows whatever Link's style is. Link in Melee was what they originally envisioned OoT's Link and Melee's art style coincides w/ his. Link in Brawl was that "gritty realistic" model from TP and the Brawl's style followed. This seems to be following the same formula.

That's the most likely scenario, but they may pull a "fooled you!" and drop it earlier in the year.

Although, if Kid Icarus took 3 years...

I imagine with kart launching in spring it only makes sense. Maybe we will get lucky with a late summer/early fall instead of a November release.

I've been very impressed by the asthetic and graphics of the newley announced Wii U games. I will be excited to buy mine next year for DK, Kart, Smash, Pikmin and 3D Worlds
