Major Nelson's Twitter Update

Listened to his last couple of podcasts, and the last one in particular where the DRM stuff had just been detailed on that Xbox webpage.

The guy called E (?) who does the podcast with him (no idea what his actual name is) mentioned that webpage and was about to read it out. Major Nelson quickly jumped in with "no need to read everything" and so only the better sounding bullet points were read out. He has skated around the controversial stuff as much as the next Microsoft employee before that - in fact I think he had ignored it altogether.

But you can bet he will be shouting about the uturn on his next podcast now it shows them in a better light.

For someone in PR, he is terrible. That Angry Joe interview was everything PR shouldn't do. It reeks of amateur. Not that Joe is the best interviewer, in fact you could very well apply the amateur to both. The difference is Larry is paid by a company and showed anger and frustration.

He sent the same message Mattrick did...we are MS, get on board and deal with it.

The heck with them. They had a shot and for me...they blew it. I don't care that they reversed the policies. They sent a message to me that was pretty clear. Not changing my opinion of them overnight.

To let him take all the blame. CBOAT even said everyone laughs behind his back and thinks he is a clown at MS. It's pretty fucked up actually if this is true.

He said that?
Larry does put himself out there. And his wardrobe with the shirts are insane. Did you see his Crazy Larry videos? He is pretty silly.

But...he's not. He just plays that way as part of his act.

Were you not following E3? There's absolutely nothing redeeming about this guy. Sure he's just doing his job, but that's literally all he's doing. He's not looking out for you, or being somewhat genuine, or down to Earth, or any of that good stuff. He was out there pushing that shit harder than anyone with no regrets just a few days ago. How can you feel like he's your friend or something?
Because outside of being told what to do, he's actually a dude who's genuinely into games as much as most people? It's unfortunate that people get to know him through all the mess that Microsoft has him trying to clear up so understandably people of little patience like yourself can't tolerate or see past all his job responsibilities/bullshit.

This whole thing made him and MS look like a joke. They took their consumers for granted and talked to us like we're all idiots they have zero respect for.

I get spinning bullshit is his job, he's just bad at it and still came off as a frustrated asshole.

This is the best way to tackle it. Unlike TotalBiscuit and CliffyB who are now outed as the biggest jackasses in the industry.

Could someone explain the reference please? I don't get it, I think I missed something.

Saw TotalBiscuit's response, what is Cliff's?

Also, Nelson was always different from those two as he was just the guy having to relay the message, TB and Cliff currently have no affiliation with MS, let alone actually being PR for them, as Nelson is.

And how exactly did you "get to know him?"

Do you really know him, or do you just know the image that he puts out there as a PR guy?

Well, they had to cancel their whole online infrastructure to disable a single DRM feature (online checking), so I think his statement was valid. It's not so simple, and comes with tremendous cost (at least for MS).
That youtube guy did not know much indeed, and being a programmer would have helped, I suppose.

Been listening to his podcast since 2006 was it? He may work for Ms and therefore have a biased opinion but he's not blind toward good games on other platforms like some people make him out to be.

Major Nelson is who he is, I may not agree with the dirty ass shit MS does but I used to listen his podcast all the time. For a PR Shill he is at least one of the more down to earth ones. He gets an Achievement for this.

Not really, he's a dick back when the PS3 era fully mocking the PS3 and shit.

I mean have you seen his gamer score? So many achievements.

But yeah Major Nealson is a super cool dude. Never had any issues with him.

So you don't know him. You know his public persona, and you've invested a lot of time over the years believing in it.

Yeah. It was real awesome the way he said The Last of Us looked "solid" on Twitter.

(Seriously, sometimes talking to Major Nelson fans feels like telling little kids the truth about Santa Claus. Only difference is, I'd avoid telling a kid the truth about Santa Claus--that's their parents' mess.)

Nice of him to poke a little fun at himself after the embarrassing interview. I understand that he has to be the PR mouthpiece for MS, regardless of whether or not they make good decisions. But you can proselytize your company's product without being rude or in his case, a huge dick. Ripping a microphone out of your interviewer's hand and asking him if he's an engineer or lawyer or whatever is extremely demeaning and belittling.

@various posters -- "he's a good dude" , "just doing his job"

really? Every time I've seen him he comes off as a smug asshole. He's perfected the holier-than-thou tone of voice. He knows it better then anyone else and his answers to AngryJoe, among others, don't inspire respect. He can do his job without being such a douche bag about it for starters. There's nothing special about him. He seems like an old out of touch corporate shill. A dime a dozen.

Yup he does love his solid games. And yeah I know him enough to not outright dismiss him but also not blind to know where his opinions tend to skew towards. Too bad you're too emotionally invested into this whole thing to realize that otherwise you'd know exactly what I mean by my earlier post. :)
Keep up the good fight in painting him as nothing more than soulless shill though, you're no different than those on the opposite end who only take his side. You've got some perseverance, I'll give you that.

But he made a joke on his twitter!

Honestly, it's like the cat burglar episode of the Simpsons. "Oh, he's so charming!" "Let's let him go!"

I'm not emotionally invested. I haven't been listening to the man's podcast since 2006 and claiming I know the real content of his character.

That'd be you.

What I know is he's a created persona. A neo-shill who hides his true agency, claiming for years to just be a programmer on the XBox team, but who is really a PR frontman, who some Xbox fans clung to and made hugely popular because it made them feel like they had an "insider" giving them "inside scoops."

Does that make Larry a bad guy? I don't know. I don't know him. I don't claim to know him. I just recognize the public persona for what it is. The Major Nelson character.

I actually really like Major Nelson, but that one interview made me lose a lot of respect for him.

Yup.

I get the 'he's just doing his job' defence but I'm pretty sure grabbing the mic from Joe and patronising him like that isn't written in his contract.

Haha nowhere did I imply I know the guy 100%. Me saying that I've been listening to his podcasts since then was to support the fact that I know when he's spewing bullshit and when he's just a person who loves games like most of us, the side that most people don't know about. Even then, do I take his opinions seriously? Lol hardly. But don't let me stop you from forming a totally biased opinion towards him :)

Most PR mouthpieces probably have their own opinions as people, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's their job to spew bias bullshit.

The way Major Nelson acted in Angry Joe's interview was frankly embarrassing to watch.

How he acted in Angry Joe's interview damaged his rep big time in my eyes. I understand it's his job but no need to be a massive tool about it.

Angry Joe becoming bigtime.
Why doesnt this guy apply for a position at one of the big websites? Cant imagine he makes alot of money off youtube fame

Wow a lot of you are being overly kind to someone who was a dick just last week.

He basically spent the whole of E3 promoting consumer unfriendly practice's and when questioned about them on a serious level btw pretended that such issues didn't exist. Have you seen Titan? Power of cloud. Family sharing.

Then he had the audaciousness to say that hot RAM will somehow affect PS4 performance in irrevocable ways.

Brown nosing someone that was serious about selling you a $500 system with DRM restriction that didn't help anyone but MS.

To let him take all the blame. CBOAT (I was wrong, not CBOAT, but some insider actually confirmed it) even said everyone laughs behind his back and thinks he is a clown at MS. It's pretty fucked up actually if this is true.

This is kind of a shitty thing to bring up on a dude you only know from his public communication on the internet.
