Metal Gear Solid V (PS3/360/PS4/XBO/Maybe PC) - Extended 9 minute E3 trailer

These GF to BB theories seem incomprehensible, since even if he's in MGS5 he'll survive and not be BB. So the ideas of going to such lengths to change him only to change him back to normal sounds ridiculous. Oh shut up don't you tell me it's Metal Gear anything goes, Decoy Octopus was the only inconsequential guy in the entire series that did stuff like that, and it was because that was just kinda his thing.

I feel silly even humouring the idea.

But what if you want to do a mission at night? You'll just leave the console on for a few hours?

If there's a method to fast forward, as people said, that'd be fine though. 24h cycle even.

I take it that's exactly what the cigar/watch part is for; you select what time you want (either in 6hr chunks, or any time you wish) so you can tackle a mission at any time of day/night -- that would greatly increase replay-ability for me.

Gray Fox being the main character in MGS V makes perfect sense.

  • While Bigboss is comatose, Miller and/or Ocelot decide that Bigboss was an asset. He is a great friend, but his role as a soldier and leader is needed.
  • Frank Yeager/Gray fox was in Big Boss's crew. When mother base was attacked Frank Yeager was mangled and brutally maimed.
  • After interrogating Huey, Ocelot orders him to start a new project. They want to take Bigboss' DNA, memories, and anything neural, and transplant it into a new host.
  • DNA and nueral qualities get transplanted in Yeager. Strenuous plastic surgery is done over the course of many years so his face matches Bigboss'.
  • DNA/memories/neural transplant will override and "fog up" Yeager's memories.
  • After 9 years of memory and neural transplants, along with extensive plastic surgery, Gray Fox is placed in a hospital and the memories transplanted make him remember the attack from Bigboss' perspective. Gray Fox was put into a induced coma during this project, is woken up in the hospital by the doctor as seen in the trailer.
  • XOF follows the trail of Gray fox being admitted to the hospital. They think it's Bigboss, and decide to attack the facility.
  • The face bandaged soldier is actually Gray Fox's real ego or self. Gray Fox still has remnants of a few memories in the past. He sees himself as a hallucination or a figment of his imagination. Could be triggered by Psycho Mantis doing his freaky mind shit to everyone.

Gray Fox shot a bunch of innocent Rhodesian people in 1979 correct? Bigboss never shows that much guilt for what he's done, usually because most of the pain is inflicted on other soldiers. That one event could've been so traumatic for Frank Yeager/Gray Fox that no matter how much of his mind is altered or taken away, he still feels guilt for what he's done.

Phantom Pain for a event one can't remember. The guilt and pain that's manifested is based on Bigboss' own memory, but the location and reason for the pain is from a part of Frank's past that can't be remembered.

And the title Phantom Pain is perfect for this scenario. Living a life that isn't your own, remembering and feeling things that aren't your own, being a completely different person but still keeping parts of yourself, these will be the greatest phantom pains.

The real Bigboss could've also come out of the coma long before nine years, but decided to step back and make decisions behind a shroud rather than make himself a target.

The things that bug me about this is that.

1. I want a Grey Fox game, but i dont want to look like snake in the process whats the point then from a gameplay perspective.

2. If it was Grey Fox then that would make the horrors Big Boss did not his fault so we are giving more sympathy for a man who as of now becomes a monster down the road. If it was Grey Fox then thats just a slap to Big Bosses dark side character and to Fox's.

3. This making Big Boss into a some sort of Jesus character like the Boss was and thats not cool either i get that these are very influential people, but to go as far as to play the double ala Liquid Ocelot, but taken a step further just because the group needs his presence thats kinda pushing it.

4. If they did pull a Face off/Liquid Ocelot move why Grey Fox most long term fans know that fox and big boss trust each other alot, but we have never seen that actually play out in a game since MG2: SS so to have this character that most dont really know have the (Honor?) privilege to impersonate the Greatest Mercenary of the 20th century. This person must have nothing, but pure devotion for Big Boss and follow his believes to the letter. The only way i can see this working is if Fox and Big Boss's relationship is pushed HARD in Ground Zeros.

I like the idea i just think that they way it is now just will confuse people and they will not really understand why it had to be this way.

That would be awesome

no that would be plagiarism :D

Exactly how I've interpreted it since I first saw the trailer.

I thought it was clear as day.

It wouldn't make much sense to show us Big Boss' downfall without it actually being Big Boss. We know the guy becomes a villain at some point, and this game is hinting that it'll show us just that.

Pretty sure Kojima said you gotta travel fast to the trailer mission if you want to do it during daylight. Implies you can't manipulate time like that.

I like it better that way.

People have been theorizing possible protagonist-switches ever since Kojima pulled the rug on them with MGS2. But that happened once and only once, a decade ago, despite concocoted theories about how it was going to happen in MGS3 and MGS4. He hasn't performed a character switcheroo in 4 games now.

I don't think something as far-fetched as Grey Fox-being-BB is going to happen; why would he waste a game that could have been spent explaining Big Boss's motivations and tying up his loose ends - of which there are many question marks remaining - for such an outlandish twist?

Just replace Gray Fox with Solidus in the theory, and certain things become much more plausible.

Big Boss is missing/in hiding so The Patriots (along with Ocelot) send a psychologically conditioned Solidus to act as Big Boss and turn him into a war criminal, a demon, the ultimate way of beating him and ruining his reputation as a legendary soldier, or just to pull him out of hiding. So Solidus does horrible things alongside his buddy Miller while Big Boss waits for his moment to step back on stage. Kind of like the Big Shell incident, a Patriot's replacement of Big Boss (which is why Solidus was made for in the first place).

As for the eyepatch, Solidus is hypnotized/conditioned to be Big Boss, so he believes he can't see with his right eye. Also, regarding the prosthetic arm, Solidus is always in his powered suit in MGS2 so we don't really see his arms, but really, this could be said about Big Boss in MGS4 or Gray Fox in MGS1.

In the trailer, Big Boss smoked a cigar and time traveled fast... are we debating that that actually happened or not? I mean, what is the confusion here?

Didn't someone mention that you had the choice of barging into the compound during the day, or waiting until night when its easier to sneak?

You could watch to see when the guard changes, and make your move then, etc. There's a lot of possibilities.

You're right. He also fired a gun, so I think there's a good case to make that there will be no shooting in this game.

"Distance is a very big factor as well. In the new trailer you saw Snake riding a horse, but you can also walk to a mission or take another mode of transport. But by the time you walk to the base, it might be dark. So that ruins or changes your strategy. Equally if you go by horse it might be day still, so you have to think an execute based on the time of day too."

Also, the sun hasn't set as much as in the previous shot. (http://youtu.be/UMyoCr2MnpM?t=5m)

I think the main reason for this Big Boss/Gray Fox theory is that these people just want Hayter to be Big Boss - kind of a denial thing. I want him back too but not with a weird theory like this.

You'd think we'd actually SEE Big Boss talk in the trailer so we could match Kiefers voice to Big Boss, but it doesn't happen. Not once. We don't ever see the main character's face when talking. It could just be a coincidence, but if you know how much time/effort/planning goes into these trailers, it'd be hard to think of it as such.

Yeah, that's actually a good point. Maybe Kojima wants to generate more speculation and stuff? Kojima may be lying, but he stated that Kiefer will playing Big Boss in both GZ and TPP in a GT interview.

This does not rule out simply standing in a safe spot for ages to wait for the sun to change, so a device to accelerate that wouldn't be out of the picture. Combine it with a mission time limit (say, 24hrs to reach Miller) and it would be a strategic choice with a natural limit to how much it could be used. Cigar uh.. battery life could be another limiting factor.

Ah shit, I was watching the trailer again and on the edge of the screen where it shows Punished Snake, you can see blurred out bars. Bars from a CAGE. I think he does it guys... :'(

He's aiming way too high to be shooting those cowering children.

No way Solidus can be Punished Snake/BB/whatever. Aisde from wearing the eyepatch on the other eye, Solidus (his remains rather) was already used in MGS4 as a Big Boss bait. I doubt Kojima would go for such a similar twist. Gray Fox is out of question too, Kojima said he wanted revengence to be a Gray Fox game but his team went with Raiden instead. I want to see Gray Fox in MGSV but not as a BB switch!

Watching that behind the scenes video, his eyes look more hazel than blue. The Ground Zeroes model definitely has blue eyes.

remember when the first rising art appeared and people were convinced it was gray fox or a grown up manly sunny or a raiden clone because the eye color was off and then they fixed it and it turned out to be nothing

or when people were convinced that ground zeroes was a game about time traveling between the past and present with solid snake and big boss because big boss's hair looked grayish-brown in some shots and dark brown in others depending on the lighting

guys trust me, it's colonel campbell! he's had surgery to make him look like big boss!

we're playing as a young colonel campbell, while as a soldier he has an opportunity to obtain the 'snake' codename, only to fail and he given the codename 'roy'. as you can in the pictures, he rotates his hat the other way to show that he has moved away from the past to become his own man.

kojima has done it again!

i preferred the changes he made to the script, even if it did undermine kojima.

So do I. The Twin Snakes is a tad closer to the original script but feels lifeless despite better acting in some parts (well, really just Cam Clarke from what I can remember).

I think all those theories are too much. We are not going to see Big Boss' fall only for him to not actually be Big Boss, come on!

What I think the game is about is: Mechanical machines VS biological machines. Skull Face looks like a zombie, like someone who was dead and brought back to life. The ninjas look like zombies too. Big Boss and Miller lost limbs, and we know that in the MGS world transplanting someone else's arm might lead them to possess the one the arm is transplanted onto for whatever reason, or at least for those people to take the personality of the one the arm is from.

I expect this game to try to retcon the whole Ocelot/Liquid arm thing. There's going to be some frankenstein-like character in the game made up of body parts from Big Boss, Miller, and maybe others. Someone "built" to carry out a vision. This would tie in perfectly with transitioning from human Patriots to AI Patriots: just as they eventually transferred their "meme" to an AI, someone is trying to re-create Big Boss, or someone's ideals, but biologically. I think it might tie-in to Portable Ops and Gene.

Remember the Successor Project?

the goal being to create the "ultimate battlefield commander" modeled after The Boss

Gray Fox was supposed to be the perfect soldier, Big Boss was the ultimate commander (to control the perfect soldier). Zero told Ocelot about this project and how he now had new data from the perfect soldier. That was at the end of MPO, after the "successor" project ended with Big Boss winning. Ocelot told Zero he wanted Big Boss to join them. Eventually they split. This leaves Zero with no one to succeed The Boss and to control the soldiers from his perfect soldier project.

Gene believed that he was the true successor of The Boss, and that Big Boss, her last protege, was the only other person who could rival his abilities. In a final fight to the death, Gene was defeated by Big Boss, conceding that his rival was the true successor after all. The Successor Project thus ended in failure.

So my guess is it might be about another attempt to create another successor, now that Big Boss has gone rogue.

And it also leads me to think that it would fit with Big Boss going back to lead Foxhound later: he will defeat this new "successor" AND have Gray Fox under his charge. Zero will be eager to have BB return to work for him. BB does so, but continues to work on Outer Heaven in the background. Miller abandons the whole MSF and his revenge after the events of MGS5.

The zombie ninjas might even be "perfect soldier prototypes".

The process of creating and maintaining the Perfect Soldier was to place the subjects into a special culture tank that shut out all of the soldier's senses, a process compared to a baby coming into the world for the first time, and usually caused people to go mad in minutes. Upon being deployed, the Perfect Soldier, as a result of the tank, had his/her senses heightened to a large degree, causing him/her to predict an enemy's movements at a much faster rate than normal, and being imbued with enhanced reflexes.

Maybe Skull Face is the new Successor. He is the new "ultimate battlefield commander" who controls the new "perfect soldiers".

MGS is my favorite series of all time, but I can't even muster up enough motivation to watch this as Hayter is no longer Snake. It sounds crazy but it genuinely has killed my interest and I hate that I feel this way towards the game.

I have been approved for posting (Thanks, mods!), and with my first post would just like to let you all know how much I appreciate the time and effort that has gone into digging deeper and researching this - my favorite - gaming franchise!
