Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

Of course it did. You seemed to think it revolved around you, though.

That's a weird assumption to make, considering I've stated multiple times I understand the need for accessibility. Doesn't mean I have to like it though, especially in the face of other Mario games that got by just fine without these crutches.

Game-dominating superweapon? Clearly we were playing different versions of the game.
Super Mario World's cape is pretty crazy powerful, tbh. It lets you skip over massive sections of the game's levels, whereas the Tanooki at least requires you to interact with the level design, even if it does make things a good bit easier.

Also, let's not act like any Mario game was difficult for seasoned players, past the first and second games. Mario is not a hard series, and I don't think it really needs to be a hard series. To be honest, I think New Super Mario Bros Wii and 3D Land are harder than most Mario games.

Yeah, you're right. They always felt so insubstantial to me, though. Maybe because they're worked in as part of the level design, and you can't take them between stages or use them in stages they're not meant for.

Also, I think there are certain challenges you can do that make games more fun, but good game design should have these challenges arise naturally whether or not the game is difficult overall, and generally it's bad game design if good players aren't using core aspects of the game. I think great players should be using all those tools to their fullest advantage in order to crush levels, tbh.
The game shouldn't be so difficult that its not accessible. The majority of the outside public(non hardore) easily die on the first or second level. Or use most of the clock just to get by

I'm not disagreeing with you. I think good game design is making the challenge accessible to whoever wants to play it, while offering increased challenges to those who seek it. I think Mario games are really good at it, tbh. They offer toolsets that allow you to get through the game quickly and stylishly if you have the proper skills, without alienating new players.

It matters because I have to restrict myself and "force" challenge into the game when that challenge should be inherent. Inherent challenge is fun, forced challenge is tedious.

I'm also throwing your ridiculous "gaming is not an exclusive club" argument back at you. People have the right to criticize games. Yes, even Mario games! Gaming is not an exclusive club, you should not get angry when people go against the grain on well-received games.

Would you feel better if there were an achievement for beating the game without powerups or something? Do you feel the same way about time trials and speed runs?

The challenge is inherent. And when you use power ups, some of that challenge disappears. That's how video games have always been. Mega Man 2 is a whole lot easier if you fight Metal Man first and use the Metal Blade for the rest of the game. That doesn't make the game easy. It's easy if you want it to be.

I don't think I ever implied that people don't have a right to criticize games, but when they have dumb reasons for doing so ("power up make the game too easy so they should remove it") they should expect to be called out

Funny how you brought up Metal Blade, because that is literally the number one reason why people criticize Mega Man 2. For reducing balance and difficulty thanks to an overpowered power up. The same exact thing applies to the cape. I don't know what you don't understand about this. It's not a hard concept or a foreign one.

There is nothing that forces you to play through Mega Man 2 while getting the Metal Blade first (hint: this is why there is a level select screen). There is also nothing that forces you to use a robot master's weakness to your advantage. These things make the game easier and more accessible. That is a good thing. It only reduces difficulty when using the Metal Blade. Want a harder game? Don't use it!

Don't complain if people derive enjoyment from different things than you (ie: wanting challenge to be inherent). Gaming is not an exclusive club.

:lol

Thank you, this is precisely what I have been saying. I'm glad you finally seem to understand.

Speedruns use the same type of mentality. The challenge is to beat the game as quickly as possible, using all the tools available (glitches, etc).

Speed runs are not an inherent challenge (unless you are given a small amount of time to complete a level like in many of 3D Land's levels). They are forced - you are putting a restraint (time) on yourself in order to accomplish it.

I think the point is that power ups are designed to make a game more fun. When the power up ruins the challenge though that isn't very fun. And getting power ups in most Mario's is a reflex, it's be annoying to have to avoid them for specific games to have more fun.

Not that I personally have any of those problems with any Mario power ups. I just agree that a good game properly balances these abilities, and doesn't make the player skip some of the main features.

For example, I get why people don't like playing Donkey Kong Country Returns with Diddy. He makes the game easier. I on the other hand, would prefer to use Diddy and still be challenged by the level design. DKCR succeeds on that level. Using a similar analogy for Super Mario World, SMW does not succeed on that level.

It's not "stupid" to complain about powerups ruining game balance.

The power ups only ruin the balance if you use them to ruin it. Super Mario World is fine if you don't fly above the screen and avoid literally everything in the level. You can play the game without doing that. You can even do that with the cape.

Man, I really hope they bring back the long-jump from Galaxy. Playing 3DLand now after playing some Galaxy 2, and that's really something I miss. What a great move.

I'm getting a move that's like it, but only goes 1/3 the distance. L + A, right? Doesn't go very far.

Run -> Crouch -> Jump for a longish jump, which effectively replaces the long jump.

Alternatively, while sliding during the crouch, tap run again to do a roll, and then jump midroll, for a rolling somersault jump.

I am tired of repeating myself. I do not like Super Mario World for the reason I stated, many other people do not like Super Mario World for that reason, and no amount of arguing is going to change that.

I think many people would disagree with your assertion that SMW is a bad game because of the cape (SMW is thought of as, you know, one of the best if not the best 2D games), but that's fine. People have opinions. If you feel that you are compelled by a force or the game to fly above the level to break it then that works for you (and maybe Mario games just aren't for you anymore). The game is not worse because of the cape (in fact, it's better because the cape allows you to skillfully reach secrets in the game that would otherwise have been inaccessible without the colored switch palaces done or secrets like the one in Cheese Bridge, but I digress)

Bowser kidnaps the sequel to Galaxy 2.

so if someone isn't enjoying a mario game, they are doing it wrong?

so if someone isn't enjoying a mario game, they are doing it wrong?

Yep. That's exactly what I said.

If someone is flying above the entire level and then complains that there was no platforming in the game, that is their fault. If they dislike it for other reasons (like level design or length or whatever), sure, that's fine. But it's dumb to say you didn't like the game because you're able to fly over it and skip the platforming when that is entirely optional. Or that the cape (or Tanooki suit or whatever) makes it "too easy" because you're able to skip levels with it. The world doesn't revolve around "hardcore gamers" and what is too easy for us might actually be hard for other people.

Yeah, the run -> crouch -> jump is what I was talking about. It looks the same, but doesn't go nearly as far or feel nearly as satisfying. There's not much reason to use it in 3DLand, imo.

And as for skill levels, it's actually really easy to forget just how difficult a basic platformer is for somebody inexperienced. When I was young, I could barely get past level 2-1 in Mario Land, which is like the easiest Mario game ever, IIRC. Then again I could also get to the underwater zone in Sonic 2 for game gear, so I guess there's really just no accounting for anything.

Tanooki suit the new Poison Mushroom, run away from it if you like even a modicum of challenging, interesting platforming.

You may have answered this, but have you played all of the special levels? Either way, I found the Tanooki suit nearly useless in some of the more vertical levels in the game. If you mess up on your jump in those type of levels, it will just slow down your journey to inevitable death. x_x

But you're just going on opinions. Many people didn't think Galaxy was the greatest thing ever. I didn't really like that version of Mario until Galaxy 2 came out and fixed all the problems. From the limited amount of footage we've seen of this game, I already think 3D World looks better and will be a 9 to 10 game.
Mario Galaxy was universally critically praised. It was/still is the highest rating game of all time.

It's easy go go on about everything being an opinion when your own opinion is a massive outlier.

lol Jimmy Fallon lying. "I play this all the time", talking about Wii U.

Super Mario 3D World looked great when I saw it at Best Buy. Plus, with 4 people playing it it looks more fun than the NSMB series was multiplayer.

lol @ teleport through the purple bricks

maaaaaaan I love this so much. looks so much better on my TV at home than it did at Best Buy

sometimes I think his horrible gaming skills is just a bit he does... why? I have no idea, but for someone who really loves games, he can't be that bad....

I spend a ridiculous amount of my life playing and reading about video game, but I'm pretty bad. You don't have to be good at games to be entertained by them.

On another note, while I was very disappointed when this game was announced , the more I hear/watch/read about it, the more excited I get. 3D Land is probably my favorite 3D Mario (after I move past the nostalgia surrounding 64)*; in retrospect, I' m not really sure why I was disappointed in the first place.

*-I still have't played Galaxy 2. I didn't own a Wii and only got a Wii U about a month ago, so I am still playing catch up.

I think i've become jaded. Mario 3D World didn't click for me until I saw that video... it looks like such a charming game, Nintendo knows what they are doing. This would have been awesome to play with family when I was a kid.

Those of you who think this game looks good please don't take this personally.

I think this game looks so underwhelming that it's the main reason I'm ditching my Wii U. I don't want to play 3D Land again...
