Why do I suck at video games?

Do you have an lcd tv?
Does it have 'motionflow' or some other 120/200/400/600 "hz" mode?
Is it on?

If yes there is your answer. (turn it off)

You also might just have a tv with tons of inherent input lag.

I think reaction time is the biggest factor in fps games. I have a slow ass reaction time; that's why I suck.

Nope. Your connection is the biggest factor. I've been beaten by people obviously less skilled than me just because their laggy connection didn't register half my shots.

Peer to peer lag goes both ways dude. Unless you are complaining about a Host on a Host to Client netcode then maybe you have a point. But most peer to peer games have client side hit detection so if your shots aren't registering all the time, theirs aren't as well. Blaming connection all the time is sad, suck it up and realize you are playing online, shit happens.

210.

But this is coming from an Inheritor in Halo Reach, so don't feel bad. Most people will never be as good as me.

I checked your Bungie.net and you don't look as high on the games with skill based ranking systems. :P

OP it could be a multitude of reasons, I have friends who sucked at games when I first introduced it to them but dedicated hours and got better than me. I also have friends who pick up a game for the first time and are immediately better than me. I think its just one of those things where if you are not just naturally good off the mark practise makes perfect.

Not that I would suggest its even worth spending hours to get good at a video game, practise is perfect applies to lots of things.

You live in UK, I live in California, so I can make a youtube vid bitching about Lag, so that means you bad.

Over does not live in the UK, he causes lag to those of us playing here too!

Guy is just a laggy mess who ruins games for Americans and us British!

I agree though, Over is just bad.

I would recommend to play with a group. Competitive can be a hassle at times. But playing for a great group is always fun. No need to be especially good either.

What are your reaction times like?
Test
Been awake for nearly 24h, got around 250. Most sub 240, but dipped off a few times, lol.

Dude, I'm an Inheritor in Reach. Please don't talk shit about me.
Also scored 302 on that reaction time thingy. Needles to say I'm pretty goddamn awesome.

Console FPS gamers don't need to worry about reaction time, all that aim assist makes up for it.

EDIT:No I will not include your Edit because it affects my rock-solid argument.

Skilled at SP != Skill at MP, the game is always very very different.

You need countless hours focused on one single MP to really be competitive. Very few people have the raw talent or time to be competitive at multiple MP games.

As someone who's come from competitive CS 1.6 play. I went and got married, had kids and then attempted to return to semi-competitive CS:GO play. Yes the game is different, but I realized I lack the time to commit to the level of competitiveness I wanted to achieve.
It used to be trivial as a teenager to spend 4-8hrs a day on a single game. Now I'm lucky if I have an hour to actually focus. It doesn't translate well into actually being a threat to people in MP games.

Now I just shoot for holding my own and not dragging the team down type of goal. That I can usually pull off. =)

Sorry to dissapoint you, but you don't messure your skill level in Halo with Halo Reach. It's an exp based game, where everyone can get to Inheritor. Choose a Halo game like Halo 3/Halo 2 to messure your skill level, since they are actually games, with an ranking system, where people get put together in a game, with a similiar skill level. (Just like in SC2 etc)

Edit:
Why do I suck so much?

If this really bothers you, you just have to play more. You will get better, unless you don't want to. Simple, as that. ;)

I've never played online much, so I've always wondered if I'm just terrible at games in comparison to my friends or if I'm actually terrible overall.

Just got to play over and over and over again. I've found that learning a games SP portion usually has little to no effect to learning the MP portion of the very same game.

This is completely false.

I know, I am trolling, I hear that bullshit so much that I have become bitter and angry toward the sentiment. I have been playing console FPS for 10+ years, and very well might I add., So I get a little cynical when my talent and dedication is marginalized by the M+K/B master race.

Mouse and Keyboard is the best way to play FPS, I know, but don't shit on me entirely because I have become extremely proficient at console FPS and enjoy them.

Well said Booshka. I prefer a mouse/kb for my FPS' but there are people tons of people on consoles that are absolutely amazing with controllers. Btw, I never got a chance to say thanks for helping grind to unlock the Dark Souls dlc a couple months back :P

Unfortunately I don't remember our Dark Souls encounter, but I am glad I was able to help. Always happy to help people enjoy more Dark Souls.

What skill based ranking system are you talking about? Matchmaking? Matchmaking is a ****ing joke. People with horrible connections, join in progress... The number means nothing, and the only people who care about it are other tryhards who couldn't win a real tournament with an actual prize on the line. :P

I don't give a damn about some stupid number next to my tag.

I haven't played Halo matchmaking in a long time, and when I did I spent most of my time screwing with my annoying "teammates". There's nothing more enjoyable than driving a member of the opposing team around in a warthog while the crybaby 13 year olds scream at you. It's hilarious.

How many tournaments have you won? Just asking. I've won 3. I admit that's low, but I hate interacting with the nerds who regularly go to these things.

If you are gonna troll this hard, at least take it to HaloGAF where you will last a little longer.

Despite the fact that I pour hundreds and hundreds of hours into games, I never get any better. Sure, I can beat most games fine, but as soon as I play multiplayer I realize how shit I am. This happens in countless games, Mario Strikes Charged, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Battlefield, Team Fortress 2, basically any game with multiplayer.

Why do I suck so much?

Are you tense? You might be trying too hard. I also think emulation is worthless. Watching how others play and trying to do as they do can lead you to dark and joyless places cause the original is always gonna be better. You should figure out how you enjoy playing online with other people. Do that and then learning the maps and the finer details of the systems in play won't seem like a slog.

You assume I am trolling. I am not. Trolling would be if I made a baseless accusation like "FPS games on the PC don't take any skill, because it's all point and click." just to get a rise out of people. Especially the ones who claim console fps games take less skill because "auto-aim". I bet they'd be raging so hard if I said that. They'd probably even link to me to some absurd twitch shooter montage from some game that looks like it was made in 1992 just to prove their point.

I just don't value true skill rankings at all because they're absolutely meaningless. There's just too many factors. If I hit you with five shots, and only three of them count because you were lagging all over the place and your rank goes up, does that mean you're better than me? How bout the guy who only plays team doubles and boosts with his friends to get to 50? Is he better than me?

Visible true skill only exists so people can brag about how much better they think they are than everyone else.

I know being an Inheritor doesn't inherently make me awesome. I just boast about it because it does take dedication, and people who aren't willing to invest as much time are somehow offended by me achieving something they will never accomplish, and so they try to insult me. They're just jealous of my sweet helmet.

Anyway, back to the topic.

Crayons, here's my expert advice:

Just keep playing. You'll get better. If someone beats you, try to learn from your mistakes and remember, it's only a game. If you routinely get upset, you're only going to continue making mistakes. Oh, and change your attitude. You can't think you suck. You can get better.

You said that you are an Inheritor in Halo:Reach and that people are just jealous they will never be as good as you. That is as baseless as an accusation as possible, all things considered.

I am interested in your life span on GAF.

That is as baseless as an accusation as possible

No, I'm sure saying reaction time doesn't matter in a console game because of the "auto-aim" is far more baseless. Especially since only one of us is actually being serious.

Please, let's not derail this thread. No more talk about me being an awesome Inheritor.

Crayon wants to get better at games.

I suggest just playing a lot, and learning from your mistakes. Get a good understanding of the game and watch how players you perceive as "better" play. Don't emulate them, but try to figure out why they do what they do.

That's probably the best advice anyone can give.

During the most pathetic period of my life, I played 10-12 hours of Halo 2 per day...and I never got too great at it. I just came to the conclusion that my skills had peaked and no amount of practice would make any difference.

Try sticking to one game, learning it inside out, and playing. You can't get better unless you try it and learn from your mistakes. Experience, learn to adjust, and practice.

In Multiplayer, after playing a few dozen games you can learn what works and what doesn't. Not everyone game, map, or mode plays the same. You adjust, and continue adjusting to the changes that you face.

randomly grinding countless hours in a game won't help you improve, you need to be perceptive during your play of what part of your skills needs improving.

I'm like the OP, generally not good at multiplayer in games. It might be lack of experience, but it might be that i just stink relative to fellow gamers. However, I have lots of fun, and that's generally what its about for me. I like much of the advice here, though I tend to just play much mord SP than MP. Upcomming games like Titanfall present an interesting challenge.

I think you are asking the wrong question.

Surely we play video games for the enjoyment?

Are you enjoying playing your current games?

I Don't have much to compare myself to seeing as I have a Wii U but I was in the top 1000 for Rayman Legends before I dropped off and to be honest I enjoyed the challenge of trying to climb higher.

If a game made me feel inferior on multi player so much that I started to not enjoy it then I would just stick to the single player campaign.

Games= FUN. If it stops being enjoyable then just play by yourself until you feel ready to try again.

Nope. He's asking the correct question. He wants to get better at a game. That is the first step to truly enjoying it.

Why do I suck so much?

Because you play for fun not to prove anything. Multiplayer folks that are good tend to try to perfect skills by doing them over and over. Many frame count in combat oriented games and rehearse and practice their approaches, tactics, and combos so that they are muscle memory and not even a conscious thought but more of a reflex action.

Play for fun...not to prove things. Believe me it gets rough trying to multiplayer pro. Games become more of an exercise than just a joy. Lots of times they are frustrating. They are still fun, but in a personal achievement or intensity way and they are no longer a simple joy. Pick whichever path sounds the most fun for you. Just remember if you dont have a lot of time for multiplayer training on a single game (much less multiples) then dont kid yourself. You wont get better without hours of just training and lots of warmup/rehearsal.

average is 233 on the test.

like one poster said, hundred if not thousands of hours playing FPS's will carry on to ALL fps games.

Speaking from experience in Team Fortress 2, an understanding of the mechanics and developing a "game sense" for positioning matters more than mechanical skill for most classes. Try and think critically and adapt to what's going on around you, keep track of where your teammates and opponents are, and keep and eye out for what others do that work well. This applies to most multiplayer FPS'es as well.

There are lots of cute tutorials out there to help you learn the basics, and plenty of casted matches to watch and pick up strategies.

Sticking to playing just a few multiplayer games helps you familiarize faster with that game:you might even get involved with the competitive scene. TF2 especially has a thriving scene catering to all skill levels.

Well, fighting games have always been terrible at teaching people how to actually play them. Some people I know have been playing them for years and don't know what is a cancel or what are the general guidelines for a combo, for example. I heard Skullgirl's tutorial actually bothers teaching you that, so I'd recommend at least checking it out on youtube and also watching videos of tournament players that use your characters and trying to emulate them to the best of your ability.

Just remember if you dont have a lot of time for multiplayer training on a single game (much less multiples) then dont kid yourself. You wont get better without hours of just training and lots of warmup/rehearsal.

I think it depends more on the genre than the individual game.

For example, it's not gonna take me hours of just training and rehearsals (seriously wtf?) to get good at Destiny. I know how shooters on Xbox are played. I have 12 years of experience.

But I am going to have to get used to Killer Instinct because while I am a fan of the original Killer Instinct and fighting games in general (WWE mostly), I do not play them all that often.

I'd imagine people who buy sports games like Madden every year, can just pick up and play the newest game too. It's what they're used to.

Maybe you're just playing the wrong games? For example, I'm not great at most online games but there are a few single-player games where I've managed to get really high on the leaderboards. I don't think anyone watching me play Pac-Man: CE DX or Monaco would doubt my gaming skills but you certainly would if you watched me try to play L4D.

A lot of times, people suck at games because they aren't able to adapt, even long term. Their skill level plateaus at a stage where they aren't analyzing their game to understand why they are losing. Or, they do understand why they are losing, but they are unable or unwilling to change in order to overcome it.

How many tournaments have you won? Just asking. I've won 3. I admit that's low, but I hate interacting with the nerds who regularly go to these things.

Sorry, I can't take you seriously, after those posts. You brag about how good you are in Halo Reach and how nearly no one can achieve your skill level and than you proceed to brag about winning 3 tournaments.

-What tournaments did you attend to?
-Who were your opponents?
-What does this have to do, with my post, which was directed to you?

And now some real talk...

What skill based ranking system are you talking about? Matchmaking? Matchmaking is a ****ing joke. People with horrible connections, join in progress... The number means nothing, and the only people who care about it are other tryhards who couldn't win a real tournament with an actual prize on the line. :P.

The numbers actually meant something in Halo 3. Like I said, people actually got matched up, based on their skill level and people were motivated to do something for their ranks. Also, lag is only a small factor, because, when you are really good, you can adjust to it and still achieve good results.

And that last sentence... Tell this please to the several pro players across several games. They would simply laugh at you, because, if you are not good online, how are you supposed to know, if you can compete with other players on tournamnets?

I don't give a damn about some stupid number next to my tag

Yet you care about a rank/name besides your name and determine your skill level on that.

Please join a Halo thread and we will discuss this further. I also want to see you performing online, so how about we play some games togther/against each other. With we, I mean HaloGAF in general.

I'm only "good" at sports games and only "great" at tennis games, so I feel your pain. I am absolutely horrible at fighting games, strat games, FPS', etc.
