The reasons why do you play video games?

Immersion, great story-telling and absolutely the main reason I can shut my brain from IRL shit

Video games are a blessing and very fun. You get to experience a lot of things and thats enough for me

They help. Keep me centered. Give me identify. Make my life complete.

Since I was a child, I've always been an introvert. I still try to avoid obligation and make more time for me. Me time is gaming time. They can be a salve for the soul. When work is tough there are few better ways to relax the mind.

Imagine that there's a man who has the whole world, and there's a gamer in the mother's basement. First guy dies, and he didn't fucking do anything Eternal, and gets nothing. Basement gamer in his life played so much video games, games where so inspiring and awesome, that out of joy he went outside and helped homeless people, told everybody about how fucking great games are and told fully about the Holy Trinity. After the basement gamer's life God was so hyped about all the Worthy works the gamer did, He rewarded him greatly. First guy didn't get anything, but the gamer recieved so much.

As with anything, I want to be moved. I'm typically more gameplay oriented than narrative. Usually with the latter, I ask, why this medium then? I demand some semblance of interactivity/reactivity with the more narrative based games. I would even take a great narrative WITH crappy combat (classic example being Planescape Torment).

I'm playing through 1000x Resist right now, and I've definitely clashed against with its decision to do some pretty big/boring 3d maps to do boring traversal in to get to the narrative bits.

For fun, relaxation, appreciation for technical creativity and innovation. Appreciating protagonist and antagonist in the games, especially for the personality, beauty or strength. I also want to appreciate developers and games that are very based, none of those woke agenda pertaining to twisted gender ideology. And most of all its good for the mind. Studies shows that videogame also helps in preventing brain related health issues like dementia and alzeimer.

Grinding for experiences. I get to see a lot of cool stuff and see new stories. Movies don't scratch that itch so much and books don't have visuals. I also like completing things that don't get un-done.

They are fun, immersive and help me relax and disconnect for a bit.
They combine several things I enjoy like memorable visuals, music, stories and fictional worlds but add an interactive element that I enjoy more than movies and TV

Beats TV and Movies for killing time. I can barely ingest those anymore. Gotta be an elite banger. No longer waste time with anything less in that realm. Games I have a lot more tolerance for middling efforts.

100% escapism, that's it, it's devoid of any true art and I like it that way, just mindless entertainment, anyone that tries to make out to be something greater is a moron. There's nothing wrong with mindless entertainment, and there's nothing wrong with video games.

To be entertained, to be challenged, to feel accomplishment, for family time, escapism, to unwind, sometimes just to waste some time between other things, and depending on the game sometimes to be creative.

That's about it I think.

To be entertained is #1.
I never stay playing a game if I'm not entertained.

The thing sometimes mentioned that a game starts at level 60 or after 10 hours is a complete failure in game design from my perspective.

If I've sensed no fun within the first 30 minutes I'll stop playing even the most hyped GOTY and I'll likely never touch it again.
"It becomes better later on."
- Yeah, sorry, should've had that content earlier on then.

Me and my wife cried during Clair Obscure prologue and during Bioshock ending. We thought and discussed about reality after Nier. We enjoyed some good family matches at Mario Kart and Mario Party. We dealt on how to solve things in Zelda. We deathmatched in Gears of War and Halo. We still think about Half-Life and how it changed gaming immersion. And many more reasons that I could spend a lifetime to recap. That's why I game. To be impressed, to be thrilled, to feel sad and to awe, like I would do with a great book or a great movie or a great song or some other great types of Art.

Portion of my brain wants to give a shit, I'm not naive but unfortunately, many people don't want someone to give a shit about them, for example, compare fictional vs real characters when they pass away, people've become unintentionally cruel.

It's easily the most immersive form of entertainment for me. When I think back on games like BotW or RDR2 it was like I visited those worlds and not only watched them. It's why I have a hard time with horror games whilst still loving horror movies, the immersion is just too big; when I was trying to play a Resident Evil game I had to stop as I didn't enjoy being the focal point of all that scariness.

Ever since I was young I've realized that I absolutely love gaming and even if I don't have the same amount of time as back then, I make time for it whenever an interesting game pops up. At times I'll maybe just play two or three games per year, but I enjoy the heck out of them.

While movies are audiovisual mediums, gaming is an interactive audiovisual medium with haptic feedback, or like ChatGPT put so nicely: a multisensory interactive medium. And just like movies, shows, plays and music it has everything from fun little games for kids to more heavy storylines with advanced controllers aimed at adults. So you can keep enjoying it even as you get older if you want more meat to the bones, I on the other hand still love DKC and SM64 as much as back then.

Edit: added some thoughts.

To escape grammar such as yours! And buttocks.
It's just about the best escapism tool in the world. If only they'd stop making nonsense games.. Doesn't the lalilulelo understand that better games = less revolt?
