Metal Gear Solid V (PS3/360/PS4/XBO/Maybe PC) - Extended 9 minute E3 trailer

I can understand not liking some of the game, or not liking the vast majority of the game even, but to say all of MGS4 was bad is just not right to me.

MGS4 is bad(imo) because not even Kojima wanted to make the game. He was forced to.

He was Old Snake. Tired of everything, depressed and had given up on his effort to make a change as he mentioned in MGS2.

If you do something forcefully, it's not going to come out well. And it shows.

Boom.

Still like Quiet's outfit. Yeah it is sexy but still kind of badass, methinks.

Awwww yissss. Someone who saw the light!

But anyway, even if you think MGS4 has a terrible story and terrible bosses...I mean mechanically speaking, everything was awesome. Games for me, should be games first and foremost and when MGS4 was a game, it was a great one. I don't even care about their backstory, the BB Corps were kickass robochicks who slaughtered a streetful of people and went on to do crazy, well directing crap before getting into crazy fights with Old Snake.

It's just over the top fun. Take Raging Raven. I don't care if she had the same story as the other BBs nor is it important. But that whole little moment where she rants about Snake "showing his rage" while cracking her neck? That was awesome. MGS4 was full of little touches like that. I mean really, it's a bunch of hot chicks in animal themed robot suits. That's awesome. Sure it makes no freaking sense but as far as videogame bosses go, it was all stellar stuff.

Shadow Moses not having human guards and stuff and breaking canon and whatever? I was too busy thinking that Raiden fighting Vamp on top of a Metal Gear was too awesome for words, to care about that. Call me shallow! I don't care!

MGS4 has Ray vs Rex.

MGS4 wins.

They really nailed that. It really stood out to me when I replayed the game a while ago.

So satisfying to smash those two together.

People often forget scenes like this when talking about MGS4. It's a schizophrenic mess, but damn if isn't an epic one at that.

Agreed. It's a mess, especially towards the end, but I loved it.

I need to replay it soon.

Wow, this quick description of MGS2 is pretty fantastic. I can't begin to recall the numerous, numerous times over the past decade+ that I talked and argued with people about all the messages and themes that the game had to offer. I think almost all people unanimously agreed at the time that the gameplay, graphics and sound were all great, but not a lot of other people were in the "this story and its themes are something that's going to be remembered for a long time for being so deep and thought-provoking" camp with me.

It's good to see MGS2 age like wine and slowly but surely see the story and themes gain the respect they deserve. I still haven't played a game that matches it.

As if he could've done what he wanted on the 360... lawl.

He may actually do that soon enough. It was about building the right engine and developing around that which was key.

Oh, how I wonder what the actual first vision of MGS4 would have turned out like had the PS3 had the specs that were initially intended and aimed for. It's something we'll never get to know about for sure though, unfortunately.

I enjoyed it when it came out and if you play it inside a vacuum, it's still rather enjoyable. But if you notice anything outside that vacuum even if for a second, boy does the illusion come smacking you in the face with a dunce cap. It's ironic that it's the most recent console game in the franchise but is aging the most poorly.

I just mean in the sense of would it still feel as disjointed in spots, would there still be some limiting gameplay elements (as ether_snake mentioned about one of the last levels), if the story and how it was told would have been the same, etc.

I'm curious how much they had done for the PS3+ before they had to just say "scew it!" and start over again to make the game on the final PS3 hardware.

Can someone help me find the song or the name of the song that is played in the first 2 minutes of the extended trailer? The one where she is humming I guess?

I enjoyed MGS4. Way too short on gameplay but I thought there was a lot of innovation there and that what little was there played really well.

I'd be shocked if MGS5 isn't game of the generation. There hasn't been a bad Big Boss game yet.

Oh, that. No, I doubt it would feel as disjointed because Kojima had the vision for it in his mind, he didn't have to pull something out of his ass at the last minute to accommodate the lowered specs. It would have definitely been a very different game for sure.
Kojima mentioned it in the PowerPoint presentation he did a few years ago, the lowered specs changed the game drastically.

I mean, the actual game looks absolutely nothing like the first 2 trailers. You watched them and expected the game to be an all-out war in the middle-east, and you chase Liquid though the war zones. Not to mention the focus on scarce ammo, the depressing atmosphere and so forth. You can claim this is all speculation, but MGS trailers always give you a sense of what the actual game will be like.

MGS 4 is bad by itself, but it is especially bad when compared to the first trailers.

I remember the lack of ammo being a specific part of what made that trailer so cool to me...well, besides it being a trailer for a new Metal Gear Solid game. I have always loved when certain types of games with shooting elements make ammo extremely scarce, especially when shooting isn't the main focus or only way to proceed through a game; which is a perfect fit for a stealth game.

That first trailer is really something to behold, even by today's standards. Is there like a clear cut answer for what Kojima was told the PS3 would be and what he got, in terms of specs?

Oh it's part of Sins of the Father? Is there a version that's not ripped from the trailer?

Unfortunately I don't think so. At least not yet.

Yep, this looked so good. The game looked like it was going to be really visceral and serious, showing the wars "of the future" where humans are basically insects. Technology making humans irrelevant, and dehumanizing the world. Never ending fabricated conflicts to keep humans who only feel alive on the battlefield busy rather than destabilizing the world.

Do you have link for that presentation? It would be interesting to read up on the development process.

Seems like it was quite a mess.

While I do agree that the original trailer looks really awesome, I think we have to realize that we don't really know what that game is.

It's kind of like what happened with Overstrike by Insoniac. That looked a lot more interesting and creative than what we got with FUSE, but there's no real way to ever know. I guess the difference here is that this MGS4 trailer was shown off as what it would actually look like on the PS3(+) instead of just a CGI trailer. Still, the same principle is there.

It's easy to see a glimpse of something and want it more than the actual, final product. In your mind, you can fill in the gaps and think up something quite amazing, but it doesn't necessarily mean it's what the final product would have been. I definitely think it would have been a more cohesive package if there hadn't been a hardware bait-and-switch, but there's no real way to ever know for sure.

Anyone listed some of the basic points from the KP ALERT! Podcasts? If so, sorry for repeating this - all of the points here are kinda old and this is mostly recap stuff:

KP ALERT!

Episode 2

  • Regarding the lines, Kojima emphasised that he didn't want everything to be told straight to the player e.g. someone's trying to get across the point of needing to use the bathroom. Instead of saying "hey, I want to use the bathroom", he'd just say "hey" and you'd see his facial expression, so you can tell that the guy really has to go to the bathroom.
  • The English dub is driving the animation and character. In the past, everything was done by hand - both the English & the Japanese were dubbed in. This time, the facial performance that's been done by the English VA is
what's driving the animation and character.
  • Akio Otsuka's facial expressions won't be in the game, just his voice.
Episode 3

  • Some part of the game will take place in Afghanistan.
  • When playing the game, players may experience completely different things in a different order.
  • Now you plan out how you're going to get into the base and also how you'll get out of it. It's up to you. More strategic freedom.
  • No Full facial scan & 3-D body scan for all characters, especially recurring characters like Snake or Kaz.
  • For new characters like Quiet, she had the full facial scan, body scan, body motion capture & facial motion capture.
  • Existing characters have an existing look, so it wasn't possible to do ALL of what was done with new characters like Quiet.
  • All characters, even the motion-captured ones, are created via concepts from Shinkawa.
  • GZ will serve as the prologue for TPP. GZ & TPP - 2 pieces of the same game.
Episode 4

  • The theme is race and revenge.
  • Revenge = the cycle of revenge, the cycle of violence that happens from 1 party instigating some sort of violent action & then the other party wanting revenge for that, & it just repeats over and over.
  • A recurring theme is the concept of loss - phantom pain. As indicated by Kaz's monologue (voiced by Robin Atkin Downes), the whole point of the monologue is that ALL the characters somehow have lost something. This game is about that pain that they feel from losing a leg, an arm, comrades, etc.
  • e.g. Skull Face losing his face, Quiet losing her words.
  • Troy Baker is the new VA & facial performance actor for Ocelot.
  • The game will interact with smart devices in some form. Various parts of the game will interact with various portable devices. There'll be some social aspects to that as well.
  • 'Sins of the Father' is the new main theme of MGSV.
  • Various Kojipro staff members throughout the game. The first enemy killed by Snake in the trailer is actually Ludvig Forssell, the music composer.
  • Paz is the one who is undergoing quick surgery to get a package removed from her body. All the procedures used to open up Paz's belly are very realistic. An actual doctor was on hand in the motion capture, doing that scene. He brought his whole medical kit with him. He instructed the motion actors in how they should perform - how to hold the belly open, what the patient would be doing at various points of the surgery.
  • Currently, roughly 6 hours of game time = 24 hours in the real world. Still tweaking things.
  • You can take weapons from an enemy while in the middle of doing a CQC combo - you can take a gun and clear out several enemies at once without having to stop and pick the weapons up manually. It's more fluid and dynamic.

So the only MGS game I ever played was the original a very long time ago. I'm confused as to who this character is in the MGSV trailer. Is it the same character from the first game?

I can't find the original specs anywhere, but I remember that it was a significant downgrade.

The other parts should be in the related videos.

So, "it wasn't about the place anymore, it was about the situation", sounds to me like "we wanted an open-world battlefield, but Sony fucked us over so we had to settle with giving the player a choice to attack the militia or not.".

You don't even know what your own point was. Kojima running to MS because Sony messed up the PS3 specs, implying MS had a much more capable machine. K.

Oh, I know what my point was, you missing my point is unfortunate, but I don't waste my time with console warriors.

So the only MGS game I ever played was the original a very long time ago. I'm confused as to who this character is in the MGSV trailer. Is it the same character from the first game?

It's Big Boss, Solid Snake and Liquid Snake (and Solidus)'s father. It's whom they were cloned after and who Liquid Snake keeps referring to in MGS1.

Oh, I know what my point was, you missing my point is unfortunate, but I don't waste my time with console warriors.

Console warriors? I'm beginning to think you're just trying to troll me for not liking Rising.

Explain your point, hurry, come up with something coherent.

No, it's the original Snake. Solid Snake was a Big Boss clone, code name Naked Snake.

If you're interested, try getting the HD collection. It has MGS2, 3 and Peace Walker which should help you understand everything. Oh and they're good games =P

Ah - that makes much more sense now why they look so similar. Getting that HD collection doesn't sound like a bad idea...

Something coherent? Kid, you're the only incoherent poster around here. Nowhere did I state that the PS3 has better or worse specs than the Xbox 360. Let it go.
The fact that you assume this is what I meant by my comment just screams to me that you are, in fact, a console warrior.

K.

And don't tell me to hurry, I don't owe you shit. You're lucky I'm in a mood to toy with you.

No, it's what you implied.

I clearly struck a nerve. Don't be so sensitive.

If you are on PS3, there's the Legacy Collection coming up (July 9...I think) with the entire canon series on it.

Also a great buy!

But if you want to keep the spending low, HD Collection is still pretty good. MGS2, 3 and Peace Walker.
MG and MG2 which are the original Solid Snake games for the MSX.

If you're getting it for the 360 and want to complete Peace Walker, let me know. I'm always up for co-oping that game.

Damn, if you were on PS3 I'd jump on there with you. I still need some trophies on PW.

I was hoping for the story of Snake and Otacon against the world. I was hoping it would recapture the vibe of MGS2 particularly the first chapter. You know the dark blue atmosphere and suspense (also found in MGS1). Instead I got Johnny Sasaki getting married, bosses nobody gave a shit about (did they just copy/paste those backstories?), Arsenal Gear with a fucking Mnt Rushmore on its bow, inconsequential "war" between the two factions, the copout ending and all the rest of it.

[edit:] Don't get me wrong, it was still GOTY. But not by merits of its story. I just expected something completely different both in story and gameplay. And I don't think I was the only one.
damn
