Just saw the Evo schedule. Here are my thoughts:
1) I'm kind of surprised that Tekken barely outdrew MK if what Mr Wizard tweeted is true (and it probably is). I thought MK would have been convincingly in last. However, there may be reasons that MK almost caught Tekken. For one, MK was pretty damn close in numbers to Tekken and Persona at UFGT. For two, with Injustice now added, a bunch of NRS-game players may have signed up late and entered both. For three, I would bet the Tekken community would not be too thrilled with having to play 2 out of 3 instead of 3 out of 5, and might opt out just based on that (or because their jobs don't let them have Friday off, obviously).
2) Based on the Friday schedule though, it looks like there's a large gap in the number of allotted stations for Tekken and MK. That Tekken can complete all their preliminary pools in just 4 hours while MK needs 8. I'm guessing Evo was expecting a much larger turnout for Tekken given the number of setups they likely obtained for it. I bet the fact Tekken wasn't drawing as well as they thought was played a big part in the decision to add Injustice as a 9th game. (And the money too, obviously.)
3) I disagree that MK's finals slot is superior to Tekken's finals slot. While the Tekken Top 8 may be the earliest, the only thing it would be competing against for stream time is Street Figther IV pools. Meanwhile, MK9 has their Top 8 at the same time as Street Fighter quarterfinals and semifinals. Which are you going to be watching? I thought so. Heck, I wouldn't even be surprised if the Top 8s for Tekken and Persona were put on the main stage, with SF4 temporarily relocated to the side stage while preliminary pools play out. I doubt MK9 will be on the main stage at all if SF4 quarterfinals are going on. So I don't think that WB's moneyhats, as you put it, bought MK9 the best Friday slot, as I think they have the worst one. (Also, there is no such thing as a best Friday slot.)
(Last thing on MK, it's not slow anymore. It goes pretty quick now. About as fast as Marvel 3/5, I think. Maybe even faster given all that Marvel "thinking time" that goes on between games.)
4) I doubt SC5 would've outdrawn any of these 9 games if it was included, especially given the (relatively) small amount Tekken pulled in. I know not all 3D games have the same community and Tekken and Soul Calibur are pretty distinct, but one game is less than a year old and the other is nearly two years old. Just how it is these days for non-Capcom games. It might've drawn better than MK had Injustice not been added, but who knows now.
5) Good to see KoF rewarded for having the most hype Top 8 last year with another Sunday timeslot. I think they might have more entrants than Persona too. (And that's without the free t-shirt.) We'll see if they're stuck with the early Sunday slot, though. It's either them or Smash.
6) Remember that there were 6 finals on Sunday last year. They learned their lesson not to do that again.
7) I don't know if the two days allotted for Melee is because of fewer setups (likely) or because they're expecting a bunch of Jigglypuff mirrors.
8) I'll be there running brackets for Persona and Street Fighter on Friday and Marvel on Saturday. Feel free to say hi if you see me.
