Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - Beta Phase 3 Impression: Phase 4 August

Played the first time on PS3 today and enjoyed it quite a bit.
The controls work great. I'll definitely get the PS4 version. I'll play my legacy PC version on launch.

Don't selectively quote... I said IF the leveling content is subpar I'm more than willing to accept it if the group content is compelling. I haven't played enough to know either way. So far it's been OK.

In comparison SWTOR and GW2 had some great leveling experiences (for different reasons), but their end game content failed in comparison.

Did my first dungeon and visited all the 3 cities...

Wasn't really impressed. It was pretty boring and lacked of the charm of areas like Phomiuna Aqueducts or the Promies. Granted, one can make an argument about the fact they actually felt like dungeons and not some kind of game of hide-and-seek like in XI.

With this, I saw all i wanted to see. I'll still play it for a while, but i then... dunno. After XI i can't see myself playing another mmorpg full time and a lot of this XIV feels polarizing.

Is there a point to rented chocobos? They seem to go the same speed as sprinting, while costing money and only being usable once before dismounting.

So this minstrel guy. Can I only get one blessing?

You can get all, if you met the rqueriments. They are just shortcuts for the beta tests.

They are just there until you get your own chocobo. I guess that if you feel really lazy you can use the porter service.

I don't have the same memories of FFXI.
...
And all that progress you made the past hour? Yeah, that doesn't matter. Because here comes a train of mobs. Those memories with everyone rushing to the Konschtat Highlands for their life are etched into me. Burned into me.
That was one of my favorite activities in FFXI before Square nerfed trains, was being a high level character hanging around in a zone guarding noobs from trains (I spent many a day in the Dunes doing just that). It gave me something cool to do in the game that the game itself didn't guide you to, made it feel that much more like living in the world, as well as allowing more interaction with the other random MMO players without having to party up.

I don't think the very first dungeons in the game should feel like the Promies at all. The game needs to ease its way towards stuff like that or else it would just peak early. (Promy runs were my favourite thing in FFXI ever)

And on the other side of the spectrum... being some asshole who loved to cause chaos. Still have nightmares about Goblin Smithy train one day in the jungle. Bodies littered everywhere.

This whole attitude is getting insane in video games in general. You are eased so easily into everything that by the time the game loses the kid gloves it's the final battle.

Promys were my favorite thing in FFXI as well and everyone wiped when they first attempted it. It was just part of the game and it made it so memorable and satisfying when you finally did accomplish it. The most brutal part of failing (exp loss and down leveling) is gone in FFXIV so they most definitely better have stuff like Promys again.

I've read that characters in Beta 4 won't be wiped for retail unless there are major bugs, but do they mean they'll only carry over your name and looks? Or, are they saying that all of your progress and gear will carry over as well?

I'm thinking of taking a break after B3, but if they're saying I can potentially get a huge head start by playing B4, I might keep going.

The sky is so freakin beautiful at night :3

Yeah it looks really good

Now it just need to be as dark as, lets say Dragons Dogma.

Yep, if theres no major problems, all the progress and stuff will carry on.

IMO the problem of Promyes (and a lot of dungeons of FFXI) is that it was just long corridors with high level monsters (compared to your level, because it was level capped). It didnt require skill, other than avoiding getting aggro (I dont remember if mobs there had true-sight aggro or not).
Now, the bosses of CoP, those were awesome fights. 6-4 was epic!

All progress (except for PvP) will carry over.

I'm enjoying the beta a lot, and I'm quite happy how it looks on the Ps3, I don't have much experience with MMO's or anything like that, but I think I will have a lot of fun with this one, definitely gonna get it.

The goal is for Beta 4 to really be the final game, just doing some bug fixes and stuff, making sure the servers and everything can handle the number of people who will show up for an open Beta. And since the game is gonna go from Beta 4 to Release, they don't want to lose a lot of potential Release customers by erasing their progress.

I thought Sastasha was pretty bland, yeah. I've had no interest in going back to that one.

Copperbell, Tam-Taru, Halatali, and Thousand Maws are much more impressive. Thousand Maws was really something, actually. I enjoyed that one a lot. But Promyvions were CoP-defining spaces. I don't think dungeons were meant to have that amount of importance to the game's content.

Here's a question for you guys...

So if beta 4 is rolling over to retail, surely the PS3 client will just patch up and be retail? Therefore if I buy the game on PC will I just be able to login from that client on the PS3 and play? Or do I need to buy a separate PS3 copy? Surely if my account is already a subscriber from the PC then all I'd need is the client itself.

Something going on with the game right now? Every time I hit play the screen just goes black and my PC locks up.

EDIT: Nevermind... looks like my GPU might be dead...

I can't seem to find an answer to this... if someone bought the CE of 1.0 but never subbed, is there any way to get the ARR preorder bonuses? (early access, moogle hat, cait sith)

How long did it take you guys to receive your notification email for the PS3? Entered my Square Enix account info, and now it brought me to the page where I have to enter my code but I still haven't received mine yet :(

EDIT: NVM, got it!!

Actually thinking about it, I wonder if a Death Sprint floor would even be possible in this game since we can pretty much outrun anything.

Where?

I'm level 23 and all the FATEs I've participated in didn't affect anything at all except my experience bar.

There is one in south shroud near some bandit "hive" that progresses a few times, and one near Drybones as well that has 4 parts. Only two I have found,

Every mmo takes until max level to get interesting. MMOs are about raiding raiding raiding. Or grouped pvp if they have it. I'm not saying your criticisms are wrong, I basically said the same thing above, but I also know that everything before max level in every mmo is pointlessssssssssssssss. It's about the end game. Get yourself up to instance level and try it out to see how everything gels. That's my one goal with this beta. I'm guessing I need level 15.

Not really how I play. I love questing and leveling. Like was my favorite thing on most mmos, and I always get puzzled by the people who race to the top missing it all. I play endgame because of interactions with players but the leveling process is where all my fun is from. Exploring a fresh world and watching as the stories and quests progress.

They seem to have optimized the game quite a bit with this build, I'm noticing smoother performance on both PS3 and PC. Game is addicting as hell. I swore I'd never preorder another MMO, but...

My PC is ready.

If anyone's wondering what the chocobo bardings look like, I slaved away all weekend just for you:
Leather Saddle
Lominsan Saddle
Lominsan Half Barding
Lominsan Barding
Lominsan Crested Barding

Looks cool. I have the Gridanian barding back in FFXIV 1.0, but I didn't have it in the ARR beta. I think I have to go rejoin the grand company to get it back. Hopefully I won't have to rebuy everything again - that would suck.

You get everything you bought...but now I want to be able to resell GC armor and weapons. They got drowngraded heavily lol

Will everyone who's a part of Phase 3 be automatically brought into Phase 4?

We don't need to acquire beta keys again will we?

On a side note, I finally added a secondary class and it feels so good. I was CJR and I have ARR as my secondary. So awesome to just change clothes and "BOOM" you're the other class. The only problem is that once I completed the all the smaller sidequests to get my first class up into the teens, I had to grind to get my level 1 ARR up to snuff. Still not clear on how to start my first leather making quest. There's so much depth, a weekend here and there just isn't enough.

Crafting is oddly addicting once you gain some skills for it.

I have been making leathers for like an hour straight and I DON'T KNOW WHY.

Haha, same here. The crafting minigame is quite fun to start, but it gets increasingly complex. I got Carpenter to 15 before I figured that's the furthest I was going to reasonably get tonight. At that point they added in item condition values (excellent, good, normal, poor) though I'm not sure how that played into it ... and you learn an "Observe" skill, which basically makes you "do nothing" for one step. Not exactly sure how that plays into anything yet, either.

I mentioned this in /fc already, but I really do hope that they add Fishing in Phase 4. Botanist was interesting enough, and if they can make chopping wood entertaining, I'd like to see how they'll handle Fishing.

The second dungeon was much better, but still, linear, and very easy. Doesn't feel like you are adventuring in some dark secret passage much.

Traps, secret passages, switches, etc. They really need to add them. The Shadow Lord Castle, The Aqueduct.. those were dungeons.

I got the ability to go on airships and now I suddenly don't have the drive to make any more progress in the story.

I rather mess around with crafting and gathering and wait it out for Phase 4 more.

Definitely hooked onto this more than I really should be though.

Also feeling that I would want to start somewhere not in Gridania in the real game (even though like half the classes start there).

And probably not be a Lalafell this time either.

This is all entry level content.

Having 10 stage FATEs that re-write history at LVL 1 or complex dungeons as your first party experience is not what they are going for with these experiences. These are introductory experiences for people and are designed around the party having 2-3 attacks and a cooldown. They are meant to be the basics. As you progress and people have a chance to learn their class and are given more skills the encounters can get more complex. Think of WoW. Ragefire Chasm is linear and very easy yet nobody would base their expectations or critique the game based on this.
