There's so much shit going on, I can't tell the difference when he's locking onto me.
Focus the adds first, the casters then the archers, then the lancers, then the gladiator, after that always face his backside, if he turns to you GET THE FUCK AWAY TO THE SIDE :D

I personally just kited it away or let the NPCs grab hate. Did this on Paladin ;d
He locks onto you even if you never attacked him ;) I found this out the hard way when he crit me for 440 and I got one shot :lol

If you're talking about the GC join mission where you
rescue Biggs and Wedge
, the Magitek Armor has the amazing ability to know who the player is and purposely lock on to him. I just stayed near it, so when it locked on and got ready to fire it was easy to just run straight through it and get behind it. And yeah, I let the NPCs tank it, even as MRD I didn't feel any particular need to go toe-to-toe with it.

Some people were talking about MRD and WAR in FC chat. They were saying that these classes have received some pretty dramatic nerfs in ARR. This makes me sad, I was thinking of starting out as MRD in Phase 4 but now I'm not so sure. I was fooling around with LNC a bit and that seemed to be fun, but I don't know anything about what DRG does.

I don't think you should count out MRD and WAR; everything in this game's almost on a totally different scale. It might not be able to do crazy power level shenanigans like 1.0 but it's still probably perfectly competent and it's roles. Phase 4 might give it some buffs, too.
Like, I have no clue what the point of Holmgang is.

DRG is mostly damage. You get four ranged jump moves, three of which are pretty strong damage while the other lowers your emnity, and a move to buff your jumps.

Got through the Ul'dah introduction questline, dunno if I'll keep chipping away come next weekend or just wait on the full game. Definitely like it more than FFXI, though it helps I can actually progress on my own without practically requiring a party after 5 damn level.

i hope we get that group finder thing soon. i was looking to run hal dungeon this morning but couldn't find enough people. then i got pulled to do something else later :(

What class can use gunblades?
didn't think they would be in but I have seen 3 or 4 npc with them.

Gunblades are a Garlean thing and aren't available to player characters currently. It seems very likely they'll form the core of an expansion class down the line, likely when we finally head up to Garlemald to start smackin' the Empire around for being douchelords for basically two games now.

I thought it was 9am to 9pm Sunday :(

It runs 6PM Friday to 6PM Sunday, Japan time. It goes down on the schedule of the devs so they can get to work on bugs found in the weekend's testing.

They really need to add voice acting and more sounds around the world because it feels very strange in 2013 playing a game basically set on mute with only music once in a while in the background. Strange feelings.

I wouldn't be surprised if we don't even deal with Ala Mhigo (and maybe Gaius) until next the expansion, let alone the empire itself.

Voice acting for the main quests will be in at launch.
I actually kind of dread this. Though I guess that's become standard despite the biggest MMO pointedly avoiding it.

But then main quests is probably about the same as any other major RPG release, it's trying to voice the entire damn game and all quests that you get into crazy territory.

When will phase 4 start? next weekend? I logged in yesterday and liked the game a lot :/

I read there's still 2-3 weekends of phase 3, then phase 4 from the last days of august.

I had a blast yesterday, can't wait for the next beta time, I really wish they'd do sundays as well.

oh ok thanks, I was worried if I would need to pick a different class in the final game.

Yoshi has spoken at length about how having voice acting for everything would dramatically impact their ability to create new content so you don't need to worry.

Also you will be able to choose voice language and dub language independently (play with japanese dub and english text for example).

Phase 3 should have 1 or 2 tests left.

If they stick to the 1-2 week planned schedule of phase 4 then it should start around the first 10 days of August. (They have announced that there will only be 1-3 days downtime between phase 4 and early access)

I really can't imagine either being a good option with the Lalafell versus complete silence. Which IS where my concern comes from actually, namely one of the soldiers in the Ul'dah questline. Otherwise I wouldn't care too much, at most muting it.

So I'm in the middle of a big move currently and haven't had the energy to try to get into the beta. I'm really quite hyped for this game but I have one big concern with it that I was hoping someone might address.

Do you think this might be a fun MMO to play if you don't exactly intend to ever reach max level? I've played tons of MMO's over the years (EQ being the really big one for me) but after WoW it just seems to me that most of them have been designed for raiding/pvp to the exclusion of almost everything else. I'm hoping FFXIV ARR might be one of those games that might be satisfying just being part of a guild and doing a little bit of whatever...

Make that two concerns: After WoW I just can't stand leveling up through what is basically the same quests over and over again. Does it seem like there will be any valid options in this game? (Like non-instanced dungeon grouping or just grinding?)

at first I thought Ul'dah is all desert stuff but it has some nice fields.

I still think Gridania is the best.

Got up to Ifrit this weekend, did 3 dungeons in a row with the same party and got some good gear too. Had a blast with this beta and I'm kinda sad we're getting wiped after the next weekend :(

I dunno, Gaius is definitely in for the long haul, but I think something is going to happen on the Mhigan front by the end of this plot arc. The intro to the Grand Companies really beats the "Garlemald is a threat!" drum, and I have to imagine that'll play out to some extent.

My personal bet is that taking back Ala Mhigo will be the capstone to "core" ARR, and it'll involve us beating up Nero Tol Scaeva for his loots. I mean one or way or another, we are punching that man for his stuff.

Nah, the only new class in the pipeline is Arcanist, and they'll use books. Gunblades are a wayyyyyys off yet; if anything gets added next, it'll be Musketeers to round out the Lominsan classes.

The second dungeon was much better, but still, linear, and very easy. Doesn't feel like you are adventuring in some dark secret passage much.

Traps, secret passages, switches, etc. They really need to add them. The Shadow Lord Castle, The Aqueduct.. those were dungeons.

Tam-Taru Deepcroft? It's supposed to be easy, because it's designed to educate players on the importance of focus-fire. I know it sounds tacky to treat everything like a tutorial, but remember that not everyone has years of experience playing MMOs, and if you're going to be thrown into parties with random players, it's a good idea to structure early content so that it creates good habits.

Copperbell, too, is designed as a tutorial, using the environment to complete objectives and kill the final boss. It encourages teamwork and kiting so that you know what to expect rather than being thrown to the wolves right from the start.

Each dungeon properly builds on one another. All the tricks you learn in the three starter dungeons will help you to complete Halatali. And the tricks you learned from Halatali will carry over to Thousand Maws of Toto-Rak, which actually does have traps.

I'm just going to re-iterate my point that areas like Xarcabard, Promyvion, and the Aqueducts were campaign/expansion-defining spaces. Dungeons aren't really supposed to have that level of prominence. They will likely play a part in the game's story, but they're just another method to leveling characters and getting good loot. I would more so expect to see Labyrinth of Bahamut or the Crystal Tower to be more in line with what you are looking for.

I know this is going to be controversial to people in this thread because you mostly seem like huge FFXI fans but I really can't get into this game.

I love Final Fantasy and I really want to love this game (the animations, the environments and music is amazing), but the combat seems so dated and very static. The quests just seem overpowering in their repetitiveness and there doesn't seem to be much diversity to them. I guess it's risky to innovate of these kinds of things, MMOs are a giant moneysink after all.

I gotta ask, does it get better after 20-ish? Because it was a struggle to get there.

How much information do we have about Coerthas and Mor Dhana in ARR? I assume Ishgard is still going to be closed, but I assume they're going to be 30+ questing areas and get the same level of revamp as everywhere else?

Do some of the pictures here look rough because of it being, there being no graphical adjustments, or people not forcing AA when taking screenshots?

I enjoyed the game from level 1, so I may be a bit biased in my perspective, but yes.

The story is a slow grind to start, but once you complete the first arc and unlock airships it really begins to pick up (about 10 hours in). You gain access to dungeons, and can start getting into the meat of the Guildleve/Guildhest content. Quests really become secondary at that point, and I leveled my Conjurer from 15 to 23 doing almost none of them.

Game totally fucks up when you try to override and force AA, at least on Radeons. I think its a great looking game in places mainly because of the lighting, but its probably because its using some multi-plat proto-Luminous and their foilage solution that it has these AA quirks or whatever.

Anyway I really cained it this weekend to finish the beta story limit and get a chocobo and I think I took some good shots on the way:
