Edge #256: Why PS4 is your next console (Shots fired, post-DRM 180)

Edge are always right about such things,

Granted we don't know what's in the article BUT:

A. Game Journalist give softball reviews and interviews people complain
B. Game Journalist state a clear decisive opinion and people complain

Car rags always tell you who they think made the best car, consumer reports tells you what's the best vacuum or frozen dinner, Edge is telling you what they think, that's what magazines do.

It is shocking to see such a hardline opinion in game journalism though, usually its wishy washy 'aww shucks everything is kinda good" nonsense because they want to get review copies and swag.

Will be interesting to read this one though, I doubt that they are going to soften the stance in the article though, cause most people will never see more than the cover.
Came to post almost exactly this after reading the last few pages.

I thought everyone was sick to death of softball, wishy-washy game coverage that cow-tows to PR and Doritos all the time?

Why on earth do gamers hate on people with real opinions all the time?

well only if you're a fan of their brand and wish to see a drive to marginalise other formats inc pc again.

them dominating will mean more stuff only on ps again like last gen and not on other formats and less choice.

That's a crap situation and I can't support it. This media push has helped me decide to buy neither console now.

So like PS2? I can't see how that is a bad thing for any of us. Cheaper, more powerful, devs taking full advantage of it. How is that a crap situation?

Changing gears to address the premise of the article...

Since the whole purpose of a game console is to play games, I hope the article addresses why the Xbox One is NOT an option at all, even if I want to play the games that are exclusively on that platform. I think it would have been a lot more fair to change the language from "only option" to "best option."

While there's no doubt that Microsoft has made titanic errors in policy/messaging/positioning, the fact is that the console is not even out yet so it's a bit premature to say the console is on a "road to ruin." The signs of trouble aren't nearly as clear as they were with the Wii U, which last year at this time we knew had little third party support, was severely underpowered, had little improvement to the online infrastructure, and had no clear appeal to the casual gamer.

It's really smart how Edge can straddle both lines by having such an incendiary cover (and I presume article) that is sure to draw a ton of attention but will also align with most readers' opinions due to the overwhelming negativity towards Microsoft in the core gaming community. Savvy.

What I think sets the One apart from the Wii U, is that the One is in-line with developer goals and visions. The architecture is there to allow relatively easy porting between PC/One/PS4 and even if it struggles to put units in peoples homes. It still will have a strong 3rd party support. Thing is it will end up taking off strong in the US, so that will help it get momentum regardless.

You know that it's not impossible that Sony had similar ideas but just had a change of mind before they unveiled the console?

Sony has patents on stuff like this and puts online-passes in all their published games

To think that Sony just cares about the consumer and not about how much money they can make seems naive. They were just smarter and knew that DRM would mean less pre-orders. (#ps4nodrm anyone?)

Companies are not humans, to say that they "showed their true face" seems so silly. They will go wherever the money lies.
But here's the thing. They didn't do them.

They didn't even pitch the idea that we might have them.

They patented something and people assumed they'd implement it on the PS4 due to what Microsoft was doing.

I'm well aware that Sony is in for the money. It's just that their business practices are less damaging to me, the consumer, than Microsoft's.

So, while they're both in for the money, one actually gives me more respect than the other. That one gets my money. The other gets my sincere disdain.

I didnt know seeing gameplay of a game and making an opinion about the product not being my cup of tea meant nothing. I've been doing it all wrong all this time?

It usually helps for your opinion if you gave the game a try. Never said you can't have an opinion; just figured he may have had some hands on time with it.

AHHH do you people even read this thread, do any research? That was after the 2005 E3 where PS3 dazzled. Not 2006. We already went over all this. Why do people think PS3 only had one E3 showing? there were two!

no it explains nothing. Look through the thread there's plenty of other similar covers for all 3

The bottom one is from 2006, genius.

Of course is after. But the cover loses its meaning after Microsoft promoted changes on Xbox One.

Xbox One is not currently in a position to be completely discarded. EDGE cover after DRM reversal is a non-sense.

I dont think yo understand what he meant.

Along with a plethora of genres with developers competing on quality of games rather than exclusive ties, I'm cool with one console dominating.

In the UK the picture is much more bleak.

£429 price. To clarify, that is the same as the high end PS3 launched at. In other words, for Brits, XO is $599!!

And that's a higher price with notably inferior hardware.

I am stunned by how many of you seem to think that after the 180 pulled by Microsoft, everything is going to be just fine.
This is a system that has most likely been designed from the ground up to have restrictive DRM & elements of always online - I don't trust MS' ability to "patch it out" by holiday season, hell, I would barely trust them to do it in 9 months. Something is going to go terribly terribly wrong :P

Even aside from that, it's not wholly unbelievable that MS would go back on it and change it again in the future (but good luck fighting that in the EU courts MS).

(as a disclaimer, I am not a fanboy, have always had both MS & Sony products since the PS2/OG XBOX)

And no Spiderman BluRay.

I think Edge being UK based has more to do with it than anything else. The majority of the features of the XBO will not work there or are not geared toward that audience. Combine that with the price and it's not going to be very desirable in their home country.

Weaker hardware, higher priced.... It certainly is in the position to be discarded! And suddenly reversing their out right anti-consumer policy dose not absolve them from trying to pull that shit in the first place.

No, it isn't.

Assuming someone is not married to their gamer score (lol) , and not needing to play Halo, what are the selling points to EDGE'S readers (core gamers).

Edge writes to a reader base that probably doesn't care about SNAP TV XBOX FIND A SHOW or kinect games. What then sells the xb1?

Well $607 really. It's more than £425!

As long as it's Sony's though, right?

Might sound fanboyish, but I'm considerably more comfortable with Sony or Nintendo leading a generation compared to Microsoft. The latter seems far more hell bent in putting the decisions of suits and profits over consumer rights and wishes. I get that every company seeks profits or makes mistakes, but Microsoft's tact has been apparent for more than just this next generation. Getting people to pay to play online, charging insane amounts for proprietary accessories (Wifi adapter, charging cable and rechargeable batteries, the hard drive which in the end was necessary), DRM, always online, shady PR, worse value proposition with gold vs PS+ and so on. And that's ignoring blunders like RRoD. I have no faith in Microsoft ever putting gamers interests at the forefront unless they're forced to, financially or otherwise.

Not just that, Edge's readers are core gamers in the UK- anything MS showed about ESPN, cable and American Football means very, very little here, until we see the MS media package for here, the £429 price looks a bit unappealing.

Good. I hope MS gets buried into the ground for all the horrible decisions they have made. Though then the problem is that next gen if Sony gets a monopoly again they will start to make horrible decisions like they did on PS3.

I'm in the UK and an Edge subscriber, stuff like Killer Instinct, Forza 5 and a new Remedy game mean I will be buying an X1.

The same as Killzone means I will buying a PS4.

You talk as if the Xbox One hasn't core titles.

Xbox One is well positioned in this department. The E3 presentation was pretty solid.

They nearly always say it directly... Who says EDGE is picking a side? They're putting an opinion piece on the cover and why shouldn't they?

This is all such a silly debate!
It's not so much about stating an opinion. It's about presenting it as an opinion. Also, you can be reasonable, even when presenting an opinion.

Yeah it's like Microsoft spent the last few months trying to force anti-consumer DRM down people's throats, completely shitting the bed on their message, and covering up their weaker spec over priced machine with disingenuous PR buzz words about clouds or something.....

Fuck any video game magazine, or journalist trying to be "neutral" on Microsoft bullshit. FUCK THAT SHIT. Every price of shit and negative press the Xbone is and will get was throughly earned. And if Edge coming out and stating an opinion based on the facts of the Xbone reveal, makes you angry?

Then blame yourself, Microsoft or God.
You're not good at sarcasm. I'm not saying they're wrong for stating their opinion, simply that their presentation is shameful.

About the other covers shown in this thread, the tone still isn't as direct and explicit.
Also, it's different to champion an innovation than to blatantly say the competition doesn't exist or matter.

They already got buried in a sense since E3. They reversed course, which I never thought they would, and probably will bounce back somewhat from it. Also, I would never want Sony, MS, Nintendo to run shit with one console.

Forza 5? Dead Rising 3? Targeted right at core gamers.

Neither FIFA or Cod are exclusives.

Thats my point.

This whole "have you seen titanfall?" nonsense doesnt mean anything. Microsoft cannot rely on the strength of unproved exclusives to entice people who are stepping back on price.

Until games like RYSE , KI and Titanfall prove to be good games, people are not going to invest in a console for them. Forza is a good start, but its competing with a GT6 release, A NFS release, A arcade racer (The crew) and is on a new platform.
