Edge #256: Why PS4 is your next console (Shots fired, post-DRM 180)

I love how fanboy is now thrown around from those trying to cope with the overwhelmingly negative reaction to this fucking circus.

MS was dead set on their vision all through E3 and back-peddled. Seriously, find a different term because that shit isn't working.

smfh@ some of the posters in here calling this unprofessional (Not you, Tom Penny, I see what you're doing motherfucker). They're so used to fluff pieces and glowing previews that when gaming journalist decide to slap around a major company, because they're fucking up majorly, they deem it "unprofessional". Get the fuck out of here with that.

Fuck all this neutrality for the sake of neutrality garbage. If a company is fucking up and it's direct competitor is on point then the press should reflect that reality.

If you mean in terms of logical thinking "Over the course of the next few years $100 is nothing" then no probably not. But in my experience people think more about the right now price and less about the total over the generation.

I mean that the extra $100 for Xbone is not going to sink it or be the huge factor that many people seem to think it will be.

$100 difference is huge. No matter how you spin it.

It's an extra game and Ps+ subscription for the people who chose Ps4 instead of X1. That's ahuge deal for the average Cod and Battlefield gamer.

It's not a matter of spin. It's a matter of opinion. I don't think the $500 price tag is OMG HUGE LOSS, I think it's a poop cherry on top of the turd sundae Microsoft has presented the Xbone out to be.

I just wish some of you would shut the hell up already. Have an opinion in a magazine ever influence how a product sells. Who the fuck really buys magazine these days? Declaring the race over before its started is fucking fanboyish bullshit.

You gonna lose yr job bro?

Seriously though, this must have completely destroyed Edge's relationship with Microsoft. I don't see how they can be anything but infuriated by this.

Well, they're big enough to be able to do this. Microsoft could cut advertisement and what not, but I can't imagine them not getting any review copies and such. Still, there aren't that many Microsoft published games I guess.

Edge do this every time Sony release a new console, MS haven't blacklisted them yet, I don't see what's different this time.

If anything throwing all the toys out of the pram would be the worst possible thing they could do. Next EDGE issue: 'Microsoft blacklisted us for standing up for gamers'.

Yet with all this bad-mouthing I still bet the Xbox One beats out the PS4 initially (definitely in NA). "Xbox" has become the old "Playstation" and the old "Nintendo." It is the term used by non-hardcore to describe video games. It is the go-to platform for those who can't name a single exclusive. That mindshare holds weight and will be evident in next-gen.

I say this as a day one, pre-order ready, PS4 advocate.

Does not compute. How can it hold weight when it changes every generation?

MS are the only ones that lose if they decide to boycott Edge. They can expect massively damaging editorials about the disagreement and there will be no answer given by MS other than "well they were mean to us once, wah, wah". Edge can do this kind of stuff with impunity because of their stature within the industry, no publisher or platform holder can afford a fight with Edge or Future publishing. It would just be too damaging.

There's plenty more exclusives coming to the ps4. They didn't blow their load at e3. TGS and Gamescom will be huge.

I assume the same is true of MS, though.

Seeing as Microsoft showed a game without a title (the Black Tusk game) at E3, I wouldn't be surprised if they have blown their load for the most part, just to get rid of that stigma from the reveal and live up to the promises I games, games, games.

EDGE just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about game journalist culture (I'm an expert), but non-confrontation and appeasing publishers are huge parts of it. It's not like Nintendo where they dont give a shit because they have Nintendo Directs. If you screw someone over Microsoft, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the UK public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Edge, they will also start reading Polygon. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but EDGE has alienated an entire market with this move.

EDGE, publicly apologize to MS, Mattrick and Balmer or you can kiss your business goodbye.

This shit never gets old...

this thing of downplaying games by ''it seems'' is getting tiresome.
Ryse is shit, titantfall is shit, dead rising is shit, killer instinct is shit...bah. Maybe I am a minority, but I like to wait the for final release, to judge a game.

So do you buy every game or play every demo before making up your mind about a game? Ryse LOOKED like shit in the demo they showed at the conference. I think it's perfectly acceptable to say so. Dead Rising had severe framerate issues. I won't go into Killer Instinct because well I don't realy care all that much about it.

No one is going to play/buy every game; I think it's okay to make up your mind as long as when you receive more information you accept it and consider changing your opinion.

I could see it happening right before the release of Halo 5.

When was the last 360 price drop? I honestly can't remember, seems like it's been a while. When the original slim came out?

They could blacklist Edge. But if Edge had the stones to run with this, I'm sure they wouldn't blink at running a "Microsoft won't play with us anymore" headline next time.

They won;t be pleased for sure, but they won't do anything.

Did they?

I know they showed Halo which is probably a 2015 title, but I thought the Black Tusk game wasn't shown at E3 and they are waiting for Gamescom, which is one of their (only?) big reveal for Xbox left.

That front cover is awesome, EDGE is massive right?

But what sort of people buy EDGE, is it mainly the hardcore audience or do casuals buy it aswell, as this helps get the right message out there with that cover but its the casual audience that needs persuading if they are unsure of console choice

Actually the Xbox One got a lot of bad publicity in the media in the days following E3, and I am not sure the reversal of the DRM policies reached the same public interest.

Laughed at some of the modified covers. I've always thought Edge's console covers were quite poor.
No. It's irrelevant and barely anyone reads it.
Is that so

Well the 2006 pic is probably old! It's a bit different this time around.

1. Price
2. Tech
3. Release Date

Edge is just pandering to its hard core base who has been up in arms about the One since the DRM fiasco.

So we decide winners of competitions now before any consumer hardware/software is even out on the market?

In that vein, it must mean my Seahawks are going to be the Superb Owl champs this season!!

YES!

We don't decide. We have a discussion involving two or more people where we each express our opinions. Sure GAF as a whole is down on MS for good reason. If MS pays for exclusive games, it won't matter at all if GAF decides they suck.

youtube is your friend. When I have some doubts, I see/read gameplay videos and impressions, from people who havesimilar tastes as mine.I'm really not interested in ryse, but If the gameplay is all like that, It will probably suck ass. Dr3 framerate problems can be adjusted.

Winner of competitions? This an advice to consumers...

The difference people aren't realizing is that MS is coming into this generation in the same spot Sony was: arrogant, riding the wave of sales, and thinking that brand loyalty would take them far and let them do whatever they wanted for DRM. Even with the 180, they are about to learn a lesson Sony has already learned before.

this isn't a prediction of who will win a sporting event, it's an endorsement of a product based on known specifications as well as company policies.

saying "x is a better machine and you should buy it" isn't the same as "x will outsell y".

Its been posted.

I think the tone of each cover is different, though.
2006 asks "Has Sony won the console war" and thats it.
2013 doesnt just declare them the only option but goes out of its way to trash the competition.

Oh shit! LOL!

they had similar opinions on the PS3, which didn't hold. They tend to overstate technology over substance, and the overkill of column was getting really dull.
One of their covers was Assassin's Creed 3 with PINNACLE under it. Buggiest crap in recent years.
I have not renewed my subscription.

It's cover that will sell the magazine for at least one issue though. But I doubt anyone will stay the length based on it.

Yeah... and it's a superficial comparison. They're different sentiments on the cover to start with - one's a question, one's a statement - and very different articles inside. They were not at all presenting PS3 as the go-to choice in that issue. The answer given to that question inside is 'no'.

As much as some are trying to say that this is nothing new for Edge, as a long time reader with all of the issues presented...it is. They've never so strongly come out in favour of one or against another pre-release.

Coming into a race arrogant with a box with a lot of problems is one thing, but if MS is being arrogant and they deliver with Xbox One good features and good games, then that's an entirely different thing.

The Xbox One might be a less powerful console than the PS4 and doesn't allow self indie publishing, but it won't be as problematic as the PS3 was for Sony for those first 2-3 years.

my favorite typo ever

Not a typo, can't say the actual wording, to many jinx.

Still, we know which is the better machine before getting hands on with the final product?

This thread has been pretty damn fun to read. The passive aggressiveness. The meltdowns. The whining of "biased media!!". So great. Can't wait until the Fall when this forum goes balls deep into system wars shenanigans.

I'm actually loving it. Standing outside the battlefield and seeing how the crazies go in is life giving. Very entertaining.
