Edge #256: Why PS4 is your next console (Shots fired, post-DRM 180)

MS can take away kinect, drop the price, and let indies self publish and people will still say. "nope LOL". They need to fight the battle they can win. Make a good system, pair it with a good ecosystem/infrastructure, release good content on it.

Well if you're referering to performance. They've lost that battle.

They already have a good ecosystem and infrastructure. All they needed to have done was to build on their successes. Concentrated on build a strong console that sold as cheaply as possible. Make sure they had compelling launch titles. Never had DRM in the first place and this thing would sell and sell.

I feel like the question mark included on the PS3 cover is important to note. Magazines put provocative questions like that on the cover all the time. The answer to that question inside the magazine issue is probably a definitive "maybe?".

I don't think what they are saying is as interesting as how they are saying it.

2006 "Has Sony already won?"

vs

2013 "This is your next console. Why the only option right now is PS4"

The way people rationalize this is amazing.

Imagine if the cover had said, "Is Microsoft the best company ever?"

Sure, it's a question, but the question rests on an underlying implication.

It's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but there's a lot of spin in this thread (and I'm not an MS apologist, I just think that reason has given way to anger and spite for a lot of people).

First time in 10 years that I actually want to read a video game magazine.

Ain't have access to EDGE over here tho, hope the article will be accessible online in some way.

Uh...but wouldn't that stance be a negative for Sony? I'm hearing a 7/1RAM ratio for games/everything else.

Wasn't that the exact reason why PS3 couldn't keep up with 360 in regards to UI/OS/feature upgrades?

Because they didn't reserver enough RAM from the start

not at all. the ps3 reserved significantly more RAM for the OS initially.

It's obvious that EDGE thought about this cover and article before Microsoft change DRM policy. This agenda is set immediately after the E3

At the time Sony was the top dog, was prepping a machine that (still - this was Feb 2006) promised the world, and was angling for three in a row - something that issue's article noted no one had yet achieved.

That was the context so the cover wasn't inappropriate IMO.

The article itself presented a mixed picture, that while optimistic for Sony did also telegraph looming problems (like development difficulty), and in closing predicted a closer race than the PS2 gen. Neither the article (or the cover) advocated strongly for one system over the other nor painted one as being on a path to ruin or whatever.

Microsoft made it clear that they don't give a shit about consumers through their shit policies and constant lies. The reversal is just a desperate attempt to slow the train wreck, it changes nothing about their vision. Their vision is clear and it deserves all the crap they are getting, reversal or not. They will pull the same shit again if given the opportunity. Good job there Edge.
.

I have zero sympathy for Microsoft. I do, however, have hope that they learn a lot from this - much like sony did from their shitty period around the ps3 launch.

It's been a bit frustrating having the media tell us that we are wrong and too stupid to understand how wonderful everything microsoft is doing. I've never read edge but I'm glad someone other than Jim Sterling stood up and said that Microsoft was full of shit and needed to change.

Great post! Particularly the bolded part.

It was disgusting seeing some non gaming magazines/newspapers/TV shows hyping the Xbone and praising it's shitty DRM.

Can't argue with the principle headline, although for me the problem is simply the price.

If MS got Xbone's price down to that of PS4, then Xbone becomes a compelling product again. Xbone will have all the games and all the support of major pubs, plus it's backed by a better back-end; the one thing MS do get right. But the current price just makes Xbone a total no-go.

Man, this is more than shots fired. This is like a bunker buster dropped into Microsoft HQ, and then after it explodes, a straight up nuke dropped into the crater.

Shoddy journalism. Should have done a side by side comparison of both consoles and their respective software then given a summary as to why the PS4 is clearly the best console to have. I find the whole "I know what's best for you" cover turns me off right away.

They should have done that in the style of the National Geographic issue on Darwin.

Have you read the article already? Can you give us some details?

Will the next edition be "This is your next console: Xbox One. Why Sony blew it"?

Just wondering if they have done something to like this before. (I don't subscribe to them)

And you know they haven't done just that in the issue how?

This thread has been pretty damn fun to read. The passive aggressiveness. The meltdowns. The whining of "biased media!!". So great. Can't wait until the Fall when this forum goes balls deep into system wars shenanigans.

Oh yes, I can't wait to be honest. I wasn't on GAF for PS3 vs Xbox360 console war shenanigans.

So then why did Edge say: "the only option RIGHT NOW"?

They could just have said "the only option" or "the only option in the long-run".

They said the only option right now. Right now we have a weaker console bundled with Kinect and some interesting core titles. (for some gamers) Those core titles are an option for some gamers though...

I have to agree with this post.

Got every issue of edge since issue 0. I'm old.

This is one of the biggest covers ever. Can't wait for it to drop on my door mat.

I wonder with all these publications, which aside from perhaps IGN, cater very much so to the hardcore gamer, whether they are backing a different horse now for strategic reasons.

Gaming magazine journalism especially is very niche, and you can bet that the guys that read Edge are what you'd term the 'hardcore' or hobbyist gamers. I think Edge and other publications have realised they obviously need to appeal to these guys to survive. They've seen lately how much influence and how loyal the 'Sony fanbase' is, and they have got to start appealing to that demographic.

This is even more pertinant if you consider Xbox's shift to a casual, dudebro focus these last few years. I doubt many of that audience would buy a gaming mag, so Edge's shift to the other side is not surprising.

I'm already sick of console wars, and they haven't even come out yet.
I love 'em. The pageantry of it all; the jabs and prods at each other; the meltdowns from over-invested fans. Right before a major two system launch is the perfect storm of fun for those who follow the industry, I don't know how anyone could not be excited and entertained by it.

What exactly did Sony blow? other than everyone's minds hyuck hyuck hyuck. No I doubt they will be making a super glowing positive review of the xbone after lambasting them so thoroughly here. A lot of people here are questioning their journalistic integrity, doing that would only call it into question more so.

All of that being said though I do think that Edge is still amongst the most reputable gaming news sources out there. The only one I think that vast majority of people would agree on is eurogamer. Those guys and gals are pretty spot on.

I appreciate your passion, although your condescending tone is for shit. you "love customers like me". Way to make generous assumptions about me over a few posts on an internet forum. Hence me not going into "obnoxious moron sales dicks like..." etc

Wow, defensive much?

Consumers like you = already educated on product, have all the info, and already know what they are going to buy.

How exactly is that a bad thing?

SMH

Yep, the 3DS vs Vita nonsense was baby stuff in comparison to watching people meltdown right now.
