Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

4) I'm sick to death of indie games being intentionally pixelated for the "retro" look when in fact it covers up for piss poor art skills and budgets.
Go play Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams. Some of the best 2D platformer graphics you'll ever see even when compared to AAA platformers and it's an indie game. You'll thank me later.

Nearly all AAA games are boring rollercoaster rides where you're just going through the motions.

The storylines in most games are horrific and sound like fan fiction.

Hey now, don't insult fan fiction by comparing it to something as pathetic as video game narratives.

Animal Crossing is just a dressed up phone game and is shit.

Magna Carta 2 and Dragon Age 2 are very good games.

Infamous series is a million times better than the Uncharted series.

ICO is an awful, boring game.

Dynasty Warriors is a great series.

Nothing wrong with "cinematic games"

Final Fantasy XIII didn't kill the franchise, it is the borderline psychotic fandom surrounding Final Fantasy VII that did.

btw... Final Fantasy X is the best game in the series.

Tekken and Mortal Kombat >> Street Fighter

Crash Bandicoot 2 >> Super Mario 64

Assassin's Creed III was a pretty fun game, the only complaints I've seen all came from this website.

Platinum Games is a vastly overrated developer.

COME AT ME BROS!!

- Okami is boring as hell too.

- ilovebees was, by far, the best thing halo-related that's been done since Halo 1.

- ICO is a horrible game with a stupid ass girl that no brain to do any shit but to hold hand
- GOW sucks after the first one
- Never liked any of the super smash brother games. they are just awfel fighting games. Tobal 2 was more fun than that
- Metal Gear Rising sucks outside the graphics and some flashy moves. invisible walls. horrible story. hell even NG didn't have invisible walls.
- i found the new mario game on WII U is more fun than any mario galaxy game. mario galaxy is probably the most hated mario games ever. i enjoyed mario sunshine more.
- The new killer instinct looks really fun. and i didn't play the first 2 games
- FFX is my fav FF game of all time. 13 is just pure shit
- Okami is a boring game
- i like BF3 story
- i don't know why i keep getting killed in BF3 multiplayer when my ratio in COD is 2 +

I don't like pretentious indie games (Braid, The Passage, Cart Life, etc).

EDIT: I guess there are some exceptions to this so never mind.

I guess I'll contribute. I kind of like that, in all the bitterness of this thread, there's not a lot of judgemental posts. It's just kind of a "here you go!" sort of thing, which is nice.

without further ado:

- FFX is horrible. The characters are awful, the story is awful, the gameplay is boring, and the whole game progression is nearly as linear as 13, which no one likes.

- Even the original Sonic games were not that good. Better than modern sonic games, but they never really that well designed in a lot of places. To me, Sonic is kind of the birthplace of the idea that faster/better looking is far more important than gameplay. And I even had a Genesis growing up, so this isn't some Nintendo v. Sega hate here.

- The original Modern Warfare was a fantastic game with an excellent core experience, and subsequently, I have faith that respawn can do good things with Titanfall. The problem with Call of Duty was its exploitation, not it's conception.

- Super Mario 64 is overrated in the sense that it has not held up as well as other N64 games or other Mario games. In fact, I'm of the belief that most 3D platformers don't hold up well, including Banjo Kazooie. I think they were fun when we were kids, but looking back, I'm glad the industry moved away from that genre.

- As someone who likes Sony products, Sony's E3 conference this year was pretty boring. I'm still interested in the opinion, but their biggest "boom" moment was basically Tretton exclaiming "We're not Xbox, absolutely nothing is going to change!", which, yeah while it's nice to hear that, it's not exactly doing anything particularly amazing. Other than that, nothing that was console exclusive seemed interesting. It was nice seeing indie games, but I know that when they make their way to the PC, I'll just get them there.

- Also, on less of a gaming note, more of a general "Business GAF note": I think some people on GAF needs to chill when layoffs happen. I don't like massive layoffs, and honestly I agree with most of GAF in that a lot of the company hiring/firing policies at major companies are insane and not good for business in the long run. That being said, hiring and firing are just part of a cycle that can be good for an economy. In countries where firing is frowned upon, there's not enough lateral movement of good talent between companies. People get locked up in companies for life because other companies, due to their commitment to not firing, are very loathe to hire new people. Stagnation occurs and creativity goes down. Getting fired sucks. I get it. It's fine to empathize and care for those that have been fired. But acting like a company is this horrible monster whenever it has to fire people is just bad logic.

And of course, all of these have the disclaimer of "in my opinion", which should go without saying in this thread.

As a Zelda fan, I've played every Zelda game, from LoZ to SS; and I've enjoyed them all. Now I understand that the modern games have faults (honestly so do the classics) but what pisses me off to no extent is when I read a lamenting, nostalgia intoxicated Zelda fan's post praise Majora's Mask to the ends of the Earth. I love Majora's Mask, but man is it overrated, it deserves it's praise but still the constant it-can-do-no-wrong praise is unbearable, so much so I've heard people praise the game for stuff it's never done which makes me wonder if those people even remember what the game looks like. Again I'm not saying it's a bad game but it's overrated.

Resident Evil 4 was the start of the downhill trajectory for that franchise.
I enjoyed the game somewhat but I hated everything else about it, and it's sequels.

The clunky controls were excusable in RE1-3 because it was all about pre-rendered backgrounds and set camera angles to give you a hitch-cock feel (but could easily be done better nowadays), but as soon as they went 3rd person action that excuse no longer works and every resident evil game since then has been terrible.

I would of much preferred the game if they stuck to what they had originally planned for it:

Agree 100%.

Okay I can't take it any more.

Batman Arkham Asylum is horrible.

You Gaffers with your haughty taughty high standards, but you let this shit slide just because you like playing as Batman.

All the bosses are the exact same? Combat is XBCBXBXB with some directional inputs? "Detective" mode is actually just "show me what to do" mode, save for some of the more obscure Easter Eggs? Oh hey wait, I can use a bat belt item that comes with one (ONE) canned animation, game salvaged.

And we also have crappy, simple 2D platforming.

I haven't played Arkham City. But This feels like a mainstream focused game that just happened to be just good enough that the hardcore crowd also approved of it, upping its street cred and leading to all these sequels. Deep down, it's just AssCreed 6: Arkham though.

I feel like Batman games actually suffer from Superman game syndrome. You'll never make Batman as cool as he is in my head.

Starfox Command is a great game. I didn't even know this was a controversial opinion until recently - but I absolutely adored it. The controls were rock-solid, the branching pathways were incredibly deep, the story was fun, and the way you connected missions together (through a flight plan simulation) was really clever.

But every time I've been the game come up in conversation, it's seen as another disappointment in the franchise. Just another game that doesn't live up to 64.

I got another one. Yesterday I played Battlefield 3 on PS3 for the first time. Graphicaly this game is incredible inconsistent. Might I say: Ugly! I'm not kidding. the LOD work is horrid, enemies have so little triangles it rips you out of the atmosphere of the game. You can also SEE the a ring around you with sharp textures, and beyond the ring mip mapping kicks in. There isn't a smooth grading to the mip mapping. It's a line with on one side sharp texture, the other blurrness.

In multiplayer ground textures are fugly, textures don't load. Geometry LOD is horrid, there appear to be Z-ordering problems with textures. It's just not a pretty game at moments.

Oh I agree... I didn't say all indie games are like this. Giana Sisters is beautiful, and I wish ALL indie games were like it. But they aren't. Just waiting for a price drop. Also, the PS3 looks like crap compared to the 360 version for some reason.

I've learned that this is the case with most multi-plat 3rd party games. The 360 version will usually be superior (some exceptions, like FFXIII) to the PS3 version.

Call of Duty games are the most popular in the world, because they are legitimately fun and well made games
PogChamp.jpg

The GBA was one of, if not the best system ever made, be it home console or handheld.

I like the COD concept. Makes me feel like a kid playing guns and teams around the neighborhood. That said I feel like I'm doing the same thing repeatedly when I play every COD since IV. Its too fast and to much centered around no attention span. Needs slowed down and bigger less arena type maps. But the concept I like.

Multiplayer is the deathnell of the console business. Players keep on playing multiplayer and don't focus on single player thus playing less games in the year and developers stop focusing on great single player experiences and focus on multiplayer. this coupled with price increases have gamers buying less and less games every year and other games which could use some support due to their better single player get pummeled at the end of the quarter. Single player when good is also infinitely more enjoyable than multi and multi should stay in pc gaming. this is why I have reduced my gaming as a lot of games are too multiplayer focused. Where are the great games which had great single player, we get around 2-3 of those a year when before in the mid 90s to early 2000s we used to get 6-10 great single player experiences. all the innovation is now in multiplayer and that sucks.

most of these BF and COD and Halos are selling more because of multiplayer NOT single player and that reduces the quality of single player as developers essentially phone it in.

Uncharted is the worst new series of this generation. Horrible platforming, "puzzles", and "gameplay" designed around setpieces instead of being fun. And the worst fans of any series. ANY SERIES.

Skyrim is a boring game that had too much time focused on making a huge world full of content and not enough time making that content fun. I've put 15 hours into it and I don't think I will play it any more.

The Gamecube controller is the best console controller of all time.

Skyward Sword has some of the worst controls in a game since Sonic 06 and Little Big Planet.

The best Banjo-Kazooie game is Nuts 'n Bolts.

The only Resident Evil I can tolerate is 5, because almost any game can be enjoyable in co-op even if the controls are terrible.

Games focus too much on killing and there are hundreds of ways to make fun games without violence.

I don't like any Megaman game besides Megaman 64.

God of War is boring and stupid.

The Xbox Live Marketplace is worse than the PSN store or 3DS eShop.

The Wii U controller looks awesome.

The best Zelda is Wind Waker.

Jedi Academy > Jedi Outcast

Super Smash Bros. Melee is the greatest game of all time.

I play Halo games for campaign co-op, not multiplayer.

I don't see how this can be true. Academy had broken hit boxes, a lack luster campaign, and multiplayer was so full of butterfly spam and one hit kill hit box bugs it couldn't be taken seriously on the ladders. It was overly ambitious and the one fun mode that truely separated it, siege, was an unconfirmed reason why Lucas asked raven to stop the support of JA. It competed with battlefront.., and on the pc bf is a total pile of dog shit. JKA had more potential for online but its bugs were never ironed out and it turned into a hot mess and division of game modes between competing clans.

Unless you were unfortunate to play the games on console... Then I feel sorry for you. On the consoles these games were as bad a battlefront was on the pc.

....The Last of Us while a good game, is horribly overrated at the moment, mainly by people who I believe play nothing but AAA titles.

The story was good but the gameplay could've used some work

I'm about 4 hours in and this is pretty much how I feel about it.

Oh and The Walking Dead was a good story wrapped in a terrible game.

+1

Agreed.

There's often more mindless fun to be had in a mediocre 3D game than a good 2D game.

I've been a huge, raving Zelda fan forever, but the NES entries are a little bit shitty. I'd retcon them out of the series and replace them with Neutopia I & II.

Virtua Fighter 3 is one of the all-time greats, and is far superior to 4 & 5. It's more organic, more tactile, more ambitious, and it balances the exaggeration of the earlier titles with the realism of the later ones.

SoulCalibur II was Namco's last good arcade game. Tekken 5 was competent, but...

Tekken 4 was the last Tekken worth playing, and the last one that felt like an arcade game. I love how "brawny" it feels, and I also love it for its millenial-era kitch: the flashiness, the outfits, the J.Lo lookalike, the shopping centers, etc. It 's one of the only games to define that cheesy '99-'01 period of pop culture, and that it did so as an arcade game only makes it all the more irreplaceable. It's the "Bad" of its day.

Hmmm, let me think.

- Dragon Age 2 is a flawed masterpiece, and much better than Origins in a significant number of ways.
- DmC is a fantastic game, probably the second best DMC game after DMC3.
- DMC4 was a horrible game filled with lazy design.
- Final Fantasy IX is boring, with an abysmal story and lacklustre characters.

Secret of Mana is a mediocre game with flawed mechanics, boring dungeons, and a lame story. The pacing is particularly bad as well.

Chrono Trigger is a great game but highly over-rated. I don't understand how people can call it the best JRPG ever, let alone the best game ever.

Mega Man 3 is much better than 2. (Actually, I don't think that's a really controversial opinion, per se)

Crysis 1 is boring and probably so is 2 and 3

Call of Duty 4 is one of the greatest games this gen

Halo 4 and 343 foreva ruined the Halo species, absolute no respect for its predecessors, no ODST, ugly ass marines, ugly ass space ships, ugly ass pelicans, stupid as fuark soap drama, stupid as fuark humanization of the master chief, made him say stupid things like "She said that to me once" stupid ass spartans now common soldiers, who was sarah palmer and spartans use to be special. showed masterchiefs stupid face, stupid didact librarian story, that was part of the charm of halo, the mysteries of the forerunners, 343 just spat in our face with all that didact crap.

All serious sams are seriously bad. stupid bland gameplay point click point click ugly grafix as well

I only liked starcraft for all the custom maps like avoid michael jackson jiant penis mode etc.

GTA series is overated as hell, half of the popularity comes from stupid teens who are obssessed with gangster stuff. I mean how could people say they enjoy mucking around in GTA3, theres nothing much to it apart from getting 5 star police chase and dying. And obviously something is very wrong with the game when i never finished one GTA even though i own Vice City and GTA4 complete pack. must be something to do with those damn helicopter missions designed for gamepads or something.

WTF is with final fantasy

Indie games are mostly pretty gimmicky and boring. would not play for more then 10 minutes.

Unchartered series is dull and boring. the platforming is boring puzzles are boring and so is the gunplay. rediculous 360 bullet hose drake is.

Bioshock 1 is overated even though i never played it cept the demo.

TF2 is overated and i can't play more then 30 minutes of it gets boring real fast.

The Last of Us is one of the best games ever and is a monumental achievement in storytelling AND gameplay. that is hard to do in modern games. All the people who hate it and say "If i wanted to watch cutscenes all i day i would just watch a movie BLAH" have no taste and are shallow prejudiced just cause they played the first 3hrs and didn't realise how dynamic and well done the combat game play actually is.

Fighting games are stupid

Most japanese games are pretty stupid, and have the worse choice of main font for their interface such as Resident Evil and Final Fantasy

Hating on stuff you don't like / haven't played / haven't finished and then not backing that hate up with anything that resembles an argument or reason isn't controversial, it's stupid.

This can't be serious. Most of his points are, "I never played it so it sucks." or "That's old and it looks outdated, therefore it's not very good."
This makes me laugh the hardest though:

I think its one of the "I know, I'll exaggerate so I have the MOST controversial gaming opinion!' posts. This thread has been loaded with hyperbole.
