Guess who has a kickass Aunt and going to see the premiere of Pacific Rim at Burbank tonight?

THIS GUY!

Wait, what? Which theater in Burbank? I live there and I haven't seen anything for it, or is it like a special gala event that one can't purchase tickets to?

Do you guys think The main female lead will be a major star after this? Her last name eludes me, Rinko is her first name.

Edit. Rinko Kikuchi. I just thinks she's going to be pretty big.

I think that she'll continue to be a critical darling, moreso than having a major Hollywood career. She has pretty eccentric taste in her role selections, and I wouldn't at all be surprised if that's what drew del Toro to cast her.

No, I don't think she will be a major star after this. It would have to be something else.

Loved her in Babel. Those highlights, too.

Reviews are looking good! This movie was never going to be critically acclaimed, but the important thing to me is that it sounds like a lot of fun. Not cynical, snarky fun, but earnest fun, like the best Hollywood special-effects movies of old.

I dunno how to embed tweets, but Neil Gaiman enjoyed the film.

Was anyone else able to get a metal poster print? x of 55?

Another review, this time from Devin Faraci :

And this part is what I wanted to hear about the movie :

During my second viewing of the movie I sat behind a boy who looked to be about eight or nine, and he was involuntarily fist pumping during the entire scene.

That kid is the avowed target audience of Pacific Rim. We live in a world where comic book characters created for ten year olds are now the sole province of thirty year old misanthropes. Guillermo del Toro is looking to take action fantasy back to its original, and best, crowd. This is a movie designed frame by frame to make kids explode with excitement and imagination, and it’s a movie that will reactivate that purity in even old fogies. Pacific Rim makes you feel like a kid, not because it’s stupid (it isn’t) or because it’s silly (it can be, but in the right way) but because it will fill you with the sort of awe and joy you had when you first saw Ray Harryhausen’s skeletons fight or Godzilla first trample Tokyo or the Millenium Falcon show up out of nowhere at the Death Star. While humanity is in dire straits in Pacific Rim this isn’t some sort of Nolan-esque meditation on the futility of heroism or the failings of men - it’s a movie about triumph and hope and overcoming all odds. And for the ten year olds, it’s about how little people can stand up to even the biggest monsters.

I'm going with the 11yo son to an advance screening on thursday, we'll see

I can't watch it until I'm back from vacation in almost 2 weeks, but when I do, it's going to be IMAX with my older brother. Luckily, I'll be doing other things to keep me occupied, but I'm looking forward to reading more feedback from those who will be watching it soon.

Anyone think she'd make a great Faye Valentine in a possible Cowboy Bebop movie?

I got bored and took to miiverse to promote this movie.

I'll be super sad if I get comments like, 'what's this?' or 'Is this from Gundam?' though.

This sounds great, don't get me wrong, but we're nearing Peak Hype here, and for myself I'm going to need to dial it back a bit. I can see my expectations getting raised a little too much now.

I wonder if it will be big in Japan. Maybe ww can make it a success, right? :(
Maybe that's why they casted a japanese actress for the female leading role. Probably not the main reason but a conscious one to appeal to asian audience.

a few of the rotten reviews refer to the battle scenes as high budget power rangers episode. Is this suppose to be a bad thing?

People misunderstand that this is a typical anime giant mecha genre live action film. It's supposed to have cheesy dialogue with a quasiscientific storyline accomapinied by bombastic action set pieces. Anyone expecting anything else from it is asking to be disappointed. I couldn't be happier to see this type of film being made which I never thought would happen.

Perhaps they understand that entirely and still think it's a bad film that's difficult to enjoy?

You saw this excuse with the Transformers movies. 'Don't critics understand, it's not SUPPOSED to be any good!'

It seems to be getting better reception than I was expecting, it'll be hilarious if it ends up higher than MoS.

The Power Rangers comparisons don't seem like a real negative to me.

Transformers looks to have taken itself far more serious than Pacific Rim. And no one said it isn't supposed to be good.

Early reviews not looking great. GDT's worst film since mimic?

Regardless, I'm still super pumped and I really hated the transformers films and anime with giant robots. GDT is one of those filmmakers whose films I'll see regardless of reviews.

RT's early reviews are always bad. Even the worst movies can expect a significant bump after release.

And Mimic was great, IMO.
