I saw it tonight at a screening. tl;dr - Cool movie, I liked it, but it didn't blow me away. But it's a fun time. Also, the 3D sucked.

Now the longer version:

First, I'd be surprised if this movie bombs. I think it'll actually do pretty well at the box office. The screening I went to was fucking PACKED. Now, usually these lines are pretty long, since they're first come first serve, but this was absurd. The entire lobby of the theater was overflowing and the line went out the door! So I think a good amount of people know about this movie. That + everyone clapped at the end = potentially good WOM, I think.

On to the movie.

The CGI, kaiju/jaeger designs, the fight sequences, other fx, etc. all are insanely good looking. Some of the kaiju are a little samey, and I wish Del Toro didn't have essentially all the battles happen at night because the darkness makes it hard to make out the fucking beauty of what's going on. But even still, it looks pretty.

The script is boilerplate. Next.

The acting ranges from so-so to bad. Hunnam and Elba both kind of suck. Actually, mostly everyone kind of sucks; flat at best, shouting-as-acting at worst. The only exceptions are Charlie Day (surprisingly) and Ron Perlman (obviously). Easily the standouts, they're both a lot of fun.

The music is forgettable. At times I thought I heard bits of Game of Thrones, then I noticed Ramin Djawadi in the credits. :lol

I do NOT recommend seeing in 3D. The battles look fine, though I don't think the effect added anything to it. All of the non-kaiju/jaeger parts looked absolutely awful. I don't see that many 3D movies so I don't know where exactly this falls on the grand spectrum of things, but this is easily the worst 3D I've ever seen. Really fucking blurry and a shit ton of ghosting. Could be my theater, but like I said, the CGI parts looked fine, it was all the non-battle scenes that looked terrible.

All in all, it was a good time. Wasn't mind blowing, wasn't the ultimate genre movie, isn't going to be the landmark blockbuster of the century or whatever the fuck the hype has gotten to now. It's a fun movie of giant robots fighting giant monsters with a bunch of dumb cliched shit and some surprisingly funny moments in it.

Go see it. But not in 3D.

And stay for halfway through the credits.

Must admit this seems to be a pretty fair and objective view of the movie. A little surprised to hear the 3D was that bad. Was it 3D IMAX you saw it in?

This is the first negative impression I've seen so far on the 3D...what setup did you see? Real3D, Dolby, IMAX?

Not surprised you had no issue with the native 3D parts, but saying the converted sections was the worst 3D ever is a bit surprising, considering the conversion job was a helluva lot longer than the average post-conversion time.

yeah that's a bit strange that he didn't like the 3D when evilore and many gaffers have mentioned it is above average for a post-convert. also i would like to know (mostly recommendations) what are good 3D movies that arent tf3 and avatar, i have a 3D tv that i never use other than those 2 movies.

I just found out this is going to be in X4D in the theater near me. That probably means it will only be a few days on the regular screens like what happened with Superman. Ugh.

How To Train Your Dragon has the best 3D I've ever seen, The Polar Express is like a rollercoaster in 3D, and Tron Legacy just looks great in general. Those are my three picks.

No problem, my friend.

Me too! I already own Collector's Edition Blu Rays for Scott Pilgrim and Hot Fuzz, so I can't wait to see how this beauty will look next to them on my shelf.

Guys, help. I can't stop the hype train! I got the Gypsy Danger and Crimson Typhoon NECA figures, the art book is on the way, and I'm about to book our IMAX 3D showings.

I can't remember the last time I actually got hyped for a movie. Not even a Pixar release gets me this hyped!

Well like I said, I haven't seen many movies in 3D, most of the ones I have seen were not conversions. I just thought the converted scenes in this movie looked really awful.

I also usually sit in the center of the theater and this time I was forced to the left aisle, which now that I think of, might be the first time I've seen in a 3D movie from the side, so maybe that was throwing me off? :lol

Did you put the glasses on? :P

I'm really thinking about that artbook. I saw it in the bookstore the other day. Do want.

Total lovefest mode after the screening at NYC today. Definitely gonna go catch it again later this week in IMAX 3D with some friends.

Quite liked the film all around, story to characters to the music and the effects. Didn't expect the screening to be 3D, but the effect was pretty good for a 40-week conversion job. Sure some scenes didn't highlight it as much, but that's how those scenes were meant to be seen, huh?

This movie either kills the Evangelion flick or does well enough to make people consider it. That's the thought I had in my head as we filed out of the theater.

I'd advise on getting the art book but only after you see the movie. There's spoilerish material in it regarding the story from what I've heard.

Really? I thought the 3D in Tron was not done well at all. Visuals were great, 3D...not so much. Hugo is another movie with fantastic 3D.

I've yet to hear if my friends are indeed going to the IMAX premiere with me. But whatever, if they won't go I'll take my family with me.

Still super hyped up for the movie!
And poster.

He loved Revenge of the Fallen, didn't he? Either that one or one of the others.

Well, he gave Toy Story 3 a negative review for being "consumerism propoganda" and went on to make several inaccurate statements about the movie (some being as absurd as thinking Ham was a villain) that make people question whether or not he actually saw the movie or just wanted to get attention by being the first one to write a negative review for it.

Roger Ebert himself called the man "a troll" and "not sufficiently evolved."

Reviews mean nothing till Armond White's review drops.

It's hard to get excited for Armond's reviews these days, since they've become so predictable. It also doesn't help that he's kind of mellowed out some and isn't nearly as much of a instigator as he used to be.

Blader's review sounds like a reasonable expectation for me.

how's the action scenes? (aside from the CG i mean). were they well shot, cool stunts from the mechs? i think del toro is a pretty meh director but the fights in blade 2 and hellboy series were pretty decent.

Ebert would've loved it I am guessing. He always scored GDT high, even for things like Blade II iirc. (Which I liked too, but was the more divisive of the bunch).

You still need the 18" figure.

I'd throw Hugo in there as one of the best I've ever seen. Also happens to be a really good movie to boot.

Hugo
Avatar
The Hobbit were the best 3D I've ever seen.

armond white is awesome. glad to see some people are warming up to him. when he trolls it's kinda lame but i love his opinion of spielberg films. his top 10s of the year tend to be pretty cool

This will probably drop to around 60% come release night. If it maintains 80 ill be mighty surprised.

Maybe. It seems like a lot of the bigger reviewers/publications have put their reviews out there already. It'll be interesting to see how other less prominent critics respond and review the movie I think.

Hugo 3D was something else. Has yet to be topped in my eyes.

Rise of the Guardians has some fantastic 3D.

well hugo it is lol. i loved the film but never bought the blu ray, thanks for the recommendations guys

also not that it matters much but i called a 83% on RT hopefully i win....and hopefully i win the other self made bet i had *hehehe*
