I love how both TimeOut reviewers' articles got counted Fresh, since the London writer is fairly close to giving it a 2-star rating. Where are the Rotten reviews? And how is that avg. rating so high? Most of these reviews are giving it three stars or something equivalent.

AFAIK, the reviewers themselves decide whether it should be counted fresh or not.

Shaking my head at the number of people who don't know how RT works ...

See, that's one thing the site itself doesn't explain, or explains it in some obscure area I haven't ever found.

So you think this is some sort of conspiracy or something? What leads you to believe the movie doesn't deserve the positive reviews? I'd venture to say that percentage is similar to the folks in this very thread who have seen the movie already. EviLore on the take too? He friggin' wrote a review, even. Now, if you go into every movie thread and complain about the validity of RT scores, then I apologize.

I gotta admit I was not expecting such high reviews (so far), but I still think it might drop to 60. I'll be very surprised if it manages to stay above 80.

I'm sure he didn't mean that. You're overreacting.

God I can't wait for this movie. I need to see giant robots fighting giant kaiju nowwww.

I read your posts and then see your avatar and can't help but notice some melancholy and sadness to all, Im sure is not the case though, that avatar is really nice.

:D

—No, I'm just confused and stupid, apparently. I didn't know how it works, now I do, now you're profiling me for reasons I can't tell. Please let it go.

Even Mumei wants to play in the sandbox.

I'm still NOT feeling any hype towards this movie. Even more so after reading Blader's review. And this part especially stood out to me:

The script is boilerplate. Next.

The acting ranges from so-so to bad. Hunnam and Elba both kind of suck. Actually, mostly everyone kind of sucks; flat at best, shouting-as-acting at worst. The only exceptions are Charlie Day (surprisingly) and Ron Perlman (obviously). Easily the standouts, they're both a lot of fun.

The music is forgettable. At times I thought I heard bits of Game of Thrones, then I noticed Ramin Djawadi in the credits. :lol

I do NOT recommend seeing in 3D. The battles look fine, though I don't think the effect added anything to it. All of the non-kaiju/jaeger parts looked absolutely awful. I don't see that many 3D movies so I don't know where exactly this falls on the grand spectrum of things, but this is easily the worst 3D I've ever seen. Really fucking blurry and a shit ton of ghosting. Could be my theater, but like I said, the CGI parts looked fine, it was all the non-battle scenes that looked terrible.

All in all, it was a good time. Wasn't mind blowing, wasn't the ultimate genre movie, isn't going to be the landmark blockbuster of the century or whatever the fuck the hype has gotten to now. It's a fun movie of giant robots fighting giant monsters with a bunch of dumb cliched shit and some surprisingly funny moments in it.

So.... what makes this movie deserving of a good score on RT? If the script and acting are not that good... how does one differentiate the works of Michael Bay and this?

Well for one I can tell what the hell is going on.

Two, the designs aren't ugly as hell.

No forced Americana like in most of Bays' films—in fact, Pacific Rim's based around a global crisis confronted by a global organization, and many of the cast members come from countries other than the US.

You pulled up a so-so review and are using it as fuel for your own expectations and turning it on us to answer for it?

What?!

We can't tell you why you aren't hyped as shit to see this movie. Also, the vast majority of us haven't seen it, so we can't tell you why this isn't just some Transformers level absurdity.

All I can tell you is that the featurettes they keep releasing reveal the heart and soul behind the making of this movie, and from what I've seen it seems to be delivering on that heart and soul.

It looks like it's going to be a great time. It looks like they are treating the material with a care and respect you don't see typically (perhaps it's always there and we don't see it...but you see it in these features).

No clue if it's literally going to be the Star Wars of a generation (I don't think anything in the modern world will ever be revered to the degree that things of the past are. No one will ever be Elvis again. No one will ever be the Beatles. Nothing will be better than Star Wars. Nothing will be more relevant than 1984. Professional criticism has created a world where more people can see alternative opinions, and writers are motivated to stick out).

If you don't want to see it, don't see it!

I can't explain to you why you aren't pumped.

You mean there's not at least 10 scenes with the beloved heroes posing with a US flag in the background? That's it, i'm skipping this turd.

Am I the only who thinks that kaiju looks like it's wearing shorts?

Because even with its obvious problems, it's still a cool, fun movie and not the obnoxious brain poison of Bay's Transformers.

Anyone thinks that WB missed a huge opportunity with this movie? The marketing was absolute garbage 2 months and heck even now. I mean, shit... Where are the happy meal toys?

Care to elaborate on how it works though? I'm genuinely curious. I tried searching it on the site but it's proving challenging because I'm using my phone.

The RT score is not the average rating like IMDB. It's the percentage of reviewers who give the movie a thumbs up. It doesn't matter if the movie is a masterpiece or merely OK, it still counts as thumbs up. The likelihood of a movie being a masterpiece of course goes up when critics are unanimously positive, but a high rating could also mean people generally liked it and nothing more.

85% and 7.9 average score after 36 reviews.

Didn't expect this when it was at the mid 70s.

Only 67% on Metacritic after 11 reviews.

Yep this is true. Which speaks even more towards how fun PR is as a movie to watch with the current scores (85% fresh).

If I care little for RT, I care even less for metacritic. It's not a movie based site and doesn't include most great films. MC is even bigger shit.

Maybe if you ....... read the reviews on RT you'd understand why they are rating the movie highly.

I need me a Striker figure though. I should just pull the trigger on a Gipsy while I wait.
Gipsy Danger is awesome, but his movement is a bit hampered by the big shoulder pads. He sadly can't make the awesome rocket punch pose.

That said, he looks amazing, and the rest of his articulation is pretty great, especially on the feet.

Get the figures while you can, guys. They sold out almost immediately at TRU. And wave 2 has Striker Eureka (Australian Jaeger), Battle Damaged Gypsy Danger with Energy Swords, and Leatherback (Kaiju)!

Oh, and the art book is glorious. Well, from the one non-spoiler page I've peaked at. Come on Thursday!
