Remembering Ryan Davis, 1979 - 2013

What good could come of revealing it? What if it was some health problem, do we need threads filled with people saying he should've lived healthier? The cause is nothing but a distraction and just because people want one doesn't mean they should have one.

I've posted this before, but it could help a lot of people. Sometimes people need a kick in the teeth to change their lifestyle, whether that be getting evicted so you find a job or have a friend die to heart disease (due to obesity) so you live healthier.

Don't act like nothing good would come out of a celebrity with a close knit community dying to a preventable disease.

Did anyone else have a dream of Ryan last night? I did and I've never had any of the giant bomb guys in a dream before. I don't remember what he said, but he was happy.

:(

That's beautiful. Reminds me of the Mel Blanc memoir:

Lets calm down guys.

I'm still too sad about this to fight... and i love to fight on the internet. It's clear that they don't really want to say it, so we should respect it although it's obvious that many of us are curious.

When a beautiful person such as Ryan, who touched so many hearts passes away; it feels as if God is taking back the gift that he gave us all. I'm very grateful for this community, and the outpouring of love that I've been able to share in by reading everyone's posts.

Stay strong everybody, and support the community that Ryan helped foster.

Did anyone else have a dream of Ryan last night? I did and I've never had any of the giant bomb guys in a dream before. I don't remember what he said, but he was happy.

Was woken up at 2 (in the night) by a friend texting me asking if I had heard about Ryan, haven't slept yet now 18 hours later, bet I will have some weird ass dreams.

It's at least good to know that Ryan passed away during his sleep and that he hopefully had no suffering. Sort of reminds me of the way my favourite actor John Candy passed away. Kinda surreal that two big, hilarious guys who I really liked and respected both passed away far too young and during their prime.

Best wishes to his family, friends/GB crew.

It's probably been said before, but I'll say it again:

The shock of Ryan's passing and how many people I've seen- random internet people- come out and talk about him like a good friend left them, stands as a pretty strong testament of why we have enjoyed all those hours of non-gaming-related talk and sillyness that Ryan and the rest of GB lay on us in the Bombcast every week. Those are what let us know him well beyond a games media person and let us really feel like Ryan was a friend of ours.

I'm sure it's been a really terrible thing to accept for the rest of the GB guys, who are some of Ryan's actual friends, but I hope they at least know all of our feelings of familiarity and friendship that we hold for Ryan goes for them, too.

I find it odd that people care about the cause of his death beyond wondering if it was a murder or not (for the purposes of revenge, of course!).

Even if it turned out to be something like a heart attack, who cares? Do some people just wanted to say, "see! fat people!" or some shit like that?

Wanting to know "Why" is a question some people may ask during the grieving process. It is a part of grieving and coping. Many people felt close to Ryan, and it is part of the human spirit to question "why" when anything we deem tragic happens.

Of course, whether you may think it is morbid or none of anyone's business is your opinion, which I respect. I can see it both ways. But it is totally natural for people to want an explanation to something they simply cannot or do not understand.

Now that we have a few more details, it will help many people continue to grieve and try to cope with his loss.

I understand the curiosity and general need for closure. And I say this with absolutely no spite and with a real appreciation for the difficulty in making major lifestyle changes--but he was a very large man who died in his sleep at 34. I don't know what kind of specificity someone in similar shape would be looking for.

He was rejecting the idea that the bombcast would do one last show and stop forever. That doesn't necessarily mean that they'll do a show today. Unless I missed something.

edit: b10 hard, damn mobile typing

OK, I've never seen this before but a Google search turned up this hilarious pic:

And this is the MODOK pic I remember seeing before:

Who knows, maybe talking about all the stuff they experienced with him is exactly what they need right now. Whether or not they want a podcast really depends on the way they feel, there's no way we can judge that without looking into their minds.

On the one hand, I know both Ryan and Jeff were very serious about not missing a cast, and I would want the "nothing stops the Bombcast" saying to hold true for Ryan.

But then, I know there's no way it could be a fun cast yet. It's only a day after we found out after all, and we don't even know how long Jeff or any non family members have known. It would almost assuredly just be a huge downer.

A good compromise might be to do a short 30 minute cast, just informing people who only listen to the podcast what has happened, how everyone is holding up, and to assure us the podcast and Giant Bomb will continue into the foreseeable future, and this would hold us over until a more complete farewell could be arranged.

This condescending bullshit should stop.

You don't have to understand why people are curious- It's how they're dealing with it. Honestly, I don't know how you can't be curious, but that's how you're choosing to deal with it and I respect that.

Extend the same courtesy to others.
I have no idea why it is forbidin to discuss cause of death. When somebody dies its usually the first question. It's not like he was an old man. People are going to speculate until the reason is revealed.

He said they aren't ending the bombcast. That's all. Do you REALLY want a bombcast today? It'll be fucking hard to get through. For us and them.
Ryan took so much pride in them having a site every single week. Wouldn't be at all surprised to get one, I'm hopeful at least. Carry on the man's legacy.

The people constantly whining about the people wondering how he died need to chill the hell out. Its completely natural to want know how someone you held dear died. If your friend died tommorow you're telling me you wouldn't want to know how? At the same time it's also completely understandable if the Davis family don't want to talk about it. But the simple act of asking is harmless and means no disrespect.

EXACTLY!

Particularly with someone so young. I mean, it is fairly obvious this is NOT death by natural causes. Wanting to know the source of someone's tragic demise is a part of expressing one's own sorrow and compassion. IT is not some sort of morbid curiousity.

If a parent loses a child, you think that parent ISNT going to want to know how their child died? It is a part of tne natural process of loss and acceptance to feel the desire to know why that loss has happened.

There is nothing disrespecful about it, quite the contrary in fact!

I'm currently going through bombcast highlights. Damn, I'll miss his hosting skills and his laughter. I watched the hilarious bit when Will Smith was on and says "executable" in a weird way and Ryan screams "What. The Fuck. Are you. SAYING?!?! THAT'S NOT A WORD!!"

Oh man, ths bit is so great. I love everything about it. Ryan flipping out, putting mister know-it-all Will Smith in his right place and Brad's intervention at the end tops it off. Comedy gold.

I listened to this almost right after I heard of his passing and I went from choked up to laughing out loud in a matter of seconds. The graphics of this bit in the YouTube clip are hilarious in their own right: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cinw63ulsSg

Ryan, shine on you crazy diamond.
