Nintendo of America not allowing SSBM to be streamed at EVO [Up: Decision Reversed]

EVO can't broadcast = someone from the community can or at least record hopefully

It would take a miracle at this point considering some people are already in Vegas and the rest have ~48 hours out to organize a huge, underground non-sponsored livestream of an event with several hundred people involved in pool play alone. Without nintendo finding out and without the cannons catching wind of it to limit their liability. You're getting cel phone vids on youtube and they will have nintendo ads before and after, enjoy lol.

I don't like smash(but there are people that do and they should be able to enjoy it if they're not able to physically go.)

nintendo = the most backwards compnay ever

have fun with smash wiiu lolz

Hahaha Nintendo does not give a fuck about competitive SSB.

I'm usually of the mindset that if you turn items off you're playing it wrong, but man I feel bad for all the people who voted Melee in. Such a long battle to get the game accepted as a fighting game and into EVO, and Nintendo swooped in at the last minute and said YEAH NOPE.

Not seeing it. This are global trends without having logged in. You sure you're not seeing tailored trends?

Well Nintendo is still trending worldwide while Nintendo, Smash and EVO do trend in America

And if people stir up enough clamor, this could get Nintendo change their minds. Not bloody likely, but possible.

"Evil" is a strong, fairly silly word to use in this context though.

What word would you use to describe denying the streaming of a game that earned 95K for charity?

NOA is insane. Really. I just want to read the "reasoning" behind this, it's going to be hilarious.

I got this.

"From some people’s perspective, not letting Smash Bros Melee® be streamed across the globe might seem like a kind of restriction. However, we hope people can appreciate the fact that we’re selling our products worldwide," Iwata told the Smash Bros Community, acknowledging that Nintendo has "historically" burnt bridges with fans doing our marketing for us. "There are many different regions around the world, and each region has its own cultural acceptance and legal restrictions, as well as different age ratings. There are always things that we’re required to do in each different region, which may go counter to the idea that players around the world want the freedom to watch whatever they want. Please understand once more."

Seriously, aren't you the same person who berated me for suggesting we tweet Bill Trinen and JC Rodrigo about region-locking? Sakurai has nothing to do with this.

Because those two don't have anything to do with region-locking. Sakurai has plenty to do with this game.

Guys, I figured it out.

Nintendo is going to make their own E-sports system, you'll be able to play NSMB U, Pikmin 3, and the New Smash Brothers competitively. The new site/feature will be called WiiE sports. People that win the tournaments get free 3DS games along with one virtual console game.

Sakurai can't do shit, don't bother tweeting him. These are issues/policies one or two pay grades above him that are not in his control or influence.

I think this goes well past the "not giving a fuck" territory and well into the "actively trying to kill the competitive scene" one.

Re-posting for the new page. Someone please add it to the OP.

From the SmashBoards:

It's with a very heavy heart that I must report some bad news. I'm sure you're all aware that Nintendo is tightening it's policies around uses of it's IP by 3rd parties. We have just been informed by their legal department that we do not have permission to stream SSBM. We will, of course, honor both the letter and the intent of their request. All broadcasts of SSBM, both official and unofficial, will be forbidden at Evo 2013. Though I understand everyone is disappointed, please do not setup bootleg SSBM streams on your phones. Doing so would put the entire tournament in jeopardy. Anyone at Evo who broadcasts SSBM will be immediately disqualified from the tournament, their passes will be revoked, and you will be asked to leave the premises. You are, of course, free to take whatever pictures or videos you like for your own personal enjoyment at the event.Since it cannot be broadcast, we will be moving the SSBM finals to Saturday immediately following the Semi Finals (est: 2:00 PM).

You guys worked very hard to get to Evo, and you should be proud of what you've done for your community and the millions of victims of Breast Cancer around the world. Even though there will be no stream, we think Smash is going to be one of the highlights of Evo this year, and we're proud to have you guys be a part of it!

would you like free advertising and hype for your franchise in the lead up to the new release?
No I think we'd rather piss off and destroy the fanbase!

Smash community struggles to get recognized as FGC in general dont consider it a fighting series. Nintendo comes and deals the final blow, to their own community.

If there's one community that deserves it, it's the Tekken community for not showing up.

Yeah but Aris + Kayo :(

This is really, really stupid with the new Smash around the corner.

On the other hand, can Skullgirls and Divekick get some more stream time please?

Nintendo does realize anyone who will watch the streams already own all the smash games, right?

What if someone who happens to watch it becomes interested in the game and by extension possibly the series. Can't have that happening.

Wow, so unnecessary, stupid and counter productive.

Oh well, I hope the fans will speak with their wallets to let them know how they feel about their future products.

Man, I feel for the Smash guys as this is just shortsighted and foolish for Nintendo to do.

Really makes me appreciate Atlus, NRS, Capcom, Namco, Lab Zero and others who realize that stuff like Evo is important not only for their games' short term promotion and advertisement period focused solely on selling, it's about building a community that cares about sticking around and sticking together because they enjoy the games they create.

It cannot be streamed. This should be in the OP.

But yes definitely record.

The fuck does he think he can do?

He's good at playing pretend, I wouldn't overthink it.

A groundswell of social media feedback will be what has any chance at making them realize this is a bad idea, and afterwards he'll tweet something to make his part seem more important.

It is good thing people who did want to watch it, can't? I kind of doubt this even affects you.

Anyway, this is Nintendo being very, very stupid. They have a lot to gain from people being excited for Smash Bros.
Yeah. I've never played Smash Bros since the first game, so having to actually see why people like it in a competitive situation with some of the best players there would have been great for me. Not to mention the obvious "perhaps this may generate some discussion for Smash Bros 3DS/Wii U in terms of competition and playing it skillfully" angle.

It's really too bad, and I'm disappointed that Nintendo's making some faux-pas in terms of their PR and in terms of the possibility of throwing Smash into the ring with better mechanics to appease competitive players in tournament scenarios.

The fact that this comes from Nintendo's legal staff... I'm pretty sure the reason is way more idiotic than "we don't want to associate with competitive gaming even if we're okay with stuff like APEX".
