Nintendo of America not allowing SSBM to be streamed at EVO [Up: Decision Reversed]

What are they going to gain?

Really? They've built an image of being family friendly - that's been their trade since the get go. You can say it's a bad one, but Nintendo has been fairly consistent.

NoA probably doesn't want their game being associated with the various FGC stigmas and:

it's outside of their image and ruins their business.

That's probably their thinking.

I'd like to hear the retort here.

Not really. It's silly that Nintendo waited until the week of the event to be a giant douche.

If Nintendo had that much of an issue with the stream (which they apparently do), I don't think they would wait to send the C&D notices. The only way I can rationalize this happening is that Nintendo literally didn't know about this until today, and went out to block it as soon as possible.

This is pretty much the death of any kind of a large community behind smash. Having a good EVO showing is akin to a shot in the arm that spurs growth and interest in a game.

Wow Nintendo. What in the hell? Something like thus has to come directly from Iwata right? Why kill this!? What's the business behind it?

Um, I don't think Iwata sits and sends out every cease and desist letter involving intellectual property.

This seems like the legal team being mindless robots. That said, higher level decisions over issues like this should have been made by now in order to change how the legal department approaches these situations.

Though if this is Nintendo of America specifically, then Reggie is the first person the legal team has to answer to, I would think.

Maturity, bitches.
Nintendo are just out of touch and clueless when it comes to anything involving the internet.
Anything involving the Internet? Literally anything? Like they don't even have their own homepage anything?

You guys are funny. Smash is not a fighting game, its some kinda platform toss people over the side battle system pokeman children's type game. Evo is for fighting games people.... fighting games.
You are right. Can't sell that much and still be called a fighter lol

In all seriousness though, it's still at the biggest fighting game tournament, so the community collectively disagrees with you.

Has any game journalist tried to contact Iwata / Reggie to know the reasons of this backassed decision?

There are people defending this on Miiverse. There are people who are saying it's selfish to want to stream the matches.

correct about everything
who could have foreseen something like this causing a wholly needless pr disaster? surely not a highly paid legal team.

The entire organization would have to have their head in the sand to not....

oh....ok.

I'd like to hear the retort here.

The odds of sales being negatively effected by association with the FGC is minimal. FGC drama is niche as hell, and anyone who has heard of said drama is probably not in Nintendo's target market. Hence, I don't think that argument is valid.

On the other side of the coin, this news is effectively Nintendo saying "competitive Smash Bros streaming is banned" and will piss off the hardcore Smash fans. And pissing off your hardcore fans broadly speaking is a bad idea.

Good lord, I just can't understand how this is a good idea. It's nothing but negativity.

What you're saying is that they do not want their game associated with the actual fanbase of that game. And you want to know what they have to gain? You should consider what they have to lose.

What is that? Do you know the consumer base? they will buy the next iteration of smash, they always have and they always will. Why? Because of what Miyamoto has consistently said: good games sell, bad games don't

politics around the practices be damned - it's deterred only bad games from releasing, not good ones.

That's incomprehensible. The kids on Miiverse say childish things, Gamefaqs type stuff but this? How could it be rationalized as "selfish".

I'd like to hear the retort here.

I totally agreed with you up there or that Nintendo don't really want EVO to make profits from their own game.

It has be either one, but I'm shocked with how people reacting to the news. I'm still going to buy Nintendo games despite the move that they made.

I'd like to hear the retort here.

This is not the first streamed event or first Evo.

This is them not wanting their games as profit for anyone else. Like their recent YouTube ban. It's a cheap and petty attempt to extort money from their fans.

The entire organization would have to have their head in the sand to not....

oh....ok.

It really wouldn't surprise me, or anyone once we cool down a bit. Isn't it more likely that Nintendo's still in the bubble they have demonstrated countless times to be in than they just went out to do this "for the evulz lol"?

I'm just saying don't attack the wrong persons here.

Still even though we don't know exactly who to point fingers at. They should have known this was going to upset a bunch of people and immediately outlined the why of it when coming out with this. But no, let's not acknowledge 20k people and have the gaming press when they're inquiring about region lock (beyond the easily debunked arguments at E3), so what's another 100k people to fuck over. I may not be entirely rational about this right now, but still regardless of what or why their communication approach at this stage could have been better.

Scorched earth.

Nintendo didn't allow MLG to stream Smash Brawl in 2010 either. This isn't an anti-FGC thing, it's a "Nintendo is retarded with their IP" thing.
