Nintendo of America not allowing SSBM to be streamed at EVO [Up: Decision Reversed]

Some are bigger than others, for example, the Pokemon company and game freak. I doubt they care about EVO but if they were the issue, I have heard negotiating with them is a bitch.

Aren't they allowing at least rudimentary streams at their tournaments? Seems like the Pokemon people are the only ones doing something to foster the community so I actually doubt they were the saboteurs here. They're actually hosting their own tournaments, something the rest of Nintendo hasn't done in ages, nor does it seem they'll do so in the future.

The only excuse I can think of for Nintendo's decision is that they probably don't want their game to be associated with a community that is known to behave as bad as the FGC sometimes does. And even then that's not a good excuse after all the effort and charity that went into Melee getting an EVO spot.

Unfortunately that is the exact method that needs to be done. Nintendo needs to be hit HARD for their outright arrogance and shitting on their fanbase. Sakurai is innocent in this most likely, but maybe if innocents got caught in the fire, Nintendo could see what they are doing is silly and wrong.

Sorry, but I won't punish Sakurai or Nintendo over the actions of NOA's legal team.

woah, I think this will be one of the hugest backslash Nintendo has seen in a while.
This is going to be pretty good. It's amazing how out of touch their department can be.

Sony and MS add streaming tech to consoles and partner with twitch etc

Nintendo lives in the 80s and thikns they can still compete

Gaming has changed, Nintendo has not and if Nintendo doesn't change they deserve to no longer exist.

Fucking over fans like this is ridiculous. What is the fucking harm of letting people stream games, i honestly dont get it. There is ZERO NEGATIVES, MANY POSITIVES.

What burns me the wrong way is that Nintendo had half a year to warn people that they didn't want Melee streamed.

What do they do? Wait until the final 5 days before EVO starts to say something against it being steamed, rofl.

Yea, after a lot of people probably had their travel reservations and shit booked... Just not cool

They are throwing out having 50-100k people watching other people lose their shit over how fun Smash Bros can be.

They gotta defend dat intellectual property.

Imagine how many people are playing Street Fighter today in the west due to Evo2k4? I have no means to venture into a percentage game, but that's a LOT of free advertising. It's even bad to call it that, because it's really just a community growing thing. Apparently Nintendo doesn't need anyone's help.

Why even allow it at EVO at all, then? What's the point of just blocking the stream?

I suspect NoA are attempting to figure out how to monetise streaming or at least to bring it under the Nintendo banner (see the Miiverse) and are taking a more heavy-handed approach than with social media since the perception is that it has fewer sources to C&D.

EVO probably could've got a Skullgirls thing going if they had enough time too. Such a baffling decision all around.

What moron made this decision? They have an upcoming game in the series, and EVO is likely to have its largest viewing audience ever. What are they even thinking?

What are they going to gain?

Really? They've built an image of being family friendly - that's been their trade since the get go. You can say it's a bad one, but Nintendo has been fairly consistent.

NoA probably doesn't want their game being associated with the various FGC stigmas and:

it's outside of their image and ruins their business.

That's probably their thinking.

Not saying they are, however I am saying Nintendo doesn't own as much as people think.

Also to the comment made about liking the devs not to publishers, and nintendo those guys tend to one in the same

Nintendo are just out of touch and clueless when it comes to anything involving the internet.

Wow Nintendo. What in the hell? Something like thus has to come directly from Iwata right? Why kill this!? What's the business behind it?

But the community that wants smash there is bigger right? It just happened, I don't think if this decision is reversed, it would hurt an community.
The SSBM community is probably bigger indeed, but regardless of the size of the communities, i think it is more a matter of principle. If they are going to cancel something now, someone wouldnt like it, just like someone doesnt like that SSBM got canceled. I guess the difference is that both KOF2013 and Persona 4 Arena have other streams already (like semi-finals or something), while SSBM is completely gone, but still, canceling those KOF2013 and Persona 4 Arena streams now would probably piss some people off i think. That is why i argued to set up a new stream in addition for SSBM instead of canceling other streams to make room for SSBM again. At least i see this as the most fair solution right now, but it might be difficult to add an extra stream instead of canceling something else.

We won something? I'd get it if we got an extra slot for semis or something, but we got nothing extra.

The post mentioned also said that the Skullgirls community was looking for future dev support (check, and then some) and tournament numbers. Well, let me tell you, any tournament that has streaming as part of its revenue stream will far rather have Skullgirls than Melee. They'll far rather have Soul Calibur 2 than Melee.

You say it's dead but in fact Melee at EVO is the biggest Melee tournament in the history of the game.

And it'll be the biggest tournament ever, since majors won't touch Melee with a bargepole after this. Even if Evo manages to reverse this, everyone else won't risk a C&D.

This community raised 200k towards breast cancer research. There have been FGC scandals, but bring a whole bunch of people together and you're bound to get outliers causing trouble at rare occassions. Truthfully I don't think this was the issue at all, they pretend there isn't a competitive scene out there for their game, they have never acknowledged it and now they're outright stomping it down.

You guys are funny. Smash is not a fighting game, its some kinda platform toss people over the side battle system pokeman children's type game. Evo is for fighting games people.... fighting games.
Are you the same Rico Suave who goes to NLBC?

Bahahahahaha, Nintendo you bastards

Smash community raises thousands of dollars to support breast cancer research and Nintendo repays them with this

Nintendo hates boobs confirmed!

...Also Skullgirls should get more stream time :p

I'm never seen such an outright disdain for people who enjoy your product. It's amazing.

Hopefully the backlash gets big enough that this gets fixed

Awesome
Good. While MK wasn't my favorite fighting game this gen by far, I tremendously respect him and his company for engaging with the fgc, hosting tournaments and aiding tournament organizers and the like. This man gets it and he should be commended for it.
Kadey was right. Netherrealm really is doing more for the FGC than just about any other company... even if I don't get their games entirely.

This is a pretty scummy thing to do so close to the tourney, it's almost like they hate the smash community and their fans...

This is the worst part about it really.

There is no way that Nintendo doesn't know about EVO by now and the whole campaign to get SSBM into the tournament MONTHS ago.

But no, tell them a few days before hand, after all the tournaments are all set in stone. Now the EVO organizers had to scramble to fix things and apparently someone (and I'm sure he's not the only one) has to miss out on a tourney based on the previous information.

Total dick move.
