Nintendo of America not allowing SSBM to be streamed at EVO [Up: Decision Reversed]

There are people defending this on Miiverse. There are people who are saying it's selfish to want to stream the matches.

Just because it's Miiverse doesn't mean it isn't crawling with trolls.

Wow such a huge fail for American and twitch fans of Nintendo.

Protecting your IP is one thing, this is just sad

Well, it would be pretty impressive for a multi-national gaming company to have not caught wind that fans of their game donated $90k for breast cancer research to have their chance to play at one of the largest fighting game tournaments in the world. I mean, really impressive.

It would be more impressive if they knew about it and still had the stream cancelled.

And that's fair but OVERWHELMING odds are the people who Nintendo is trying to protect Smash's image for, like children, the elderly, and everyone else they're advertising to these days probably aren't going to be exposed to EVO anyway...

I keed with the advertising quip but seriously, if their worried about Smash being associated with various FGC stigmas then that's just dumb. They're fucking over the community over something that will make little difference and little impact on how the vast majority of gamers view this IP.

No - they aren't, your'e right.

but they will be on the news when another dumbshit noel brown incident happens at Evo.

Count it.

Welcome to Nintendo Land.

Don't act like it's just the Nintendo fans.

You saw what happened here back when Microsoft was being super stupid about Xbox One.

People will defend companies against their own interests for some reason, and I don't get it.

They're going to learn the same way sega did back in the day with Vf4. You don't want to mess with your intended audience. Common sense.

What I take away from this is that Nintendo's network related struggles go much deeper than simply having friend codes.

It's this sort of thing which is, to me, more telling. It suggests they do not understand networking more broadly. This is a social event; it is a way for a community of people who ostensibly enjoy their game to come together.

They seem to view the developments of communal, online gaming as some sort of alien force to be exterminated, and I think this serves them a profound disservice.

I think this about covers it as well as anything else.

Nintendo have disappointed me many times over the years, but I have stood by them.

This is the first thing they have done that has literally made me angry at them.

How STUPID can they be?

did they elaborate?

my christianity teacher in new orleans told us masturbation was a sin because it was selfish; we werent sharing our love. is it something cockamamie like that?

What I'm seeing is "they still get to play it and the money is still getting donated anyway so who cares if it's streamed or not?"

Said news will at worst get as far as Kotaku. Kotaku readers, broadly speaking, are not Nintendo's target market.

The point is that he needs to be aware of it because he's one of the few people who can actually do something about it.

THAT's why people are advocating reaching out to execs personal twitter pages. It lets people see things that would otherwise be "beneath them" in the corporate ladder.

This is basically how we helped get used game DRM removed from next gen, by the way.

You aren't exactly dealing with microsoft and sony here.

Wow really? Wow. Just wow.

Go fuck yourself Nintendo. The real tragedy is that Skullgirls got screwed for this bullshit.
Yeah, we would have won the drive for sure and who knows how many people would have shown up for the game in official status. Could have been anywhere between 200 and 300 people. Not gonna expect more with only 8 characters at the moment, but you my point.

Nintendo's slothfulness and ignorance screwed over a lot of people here.

Yea, after a lot of people probably had their travel reservations and shit booked... Just not cool

EVO probably could've got a Skullgirls thing going if they had enough time too. Such a baffling decision all around.

This is the worst part about it really.

There is no way that Nintendo doesn't know about EVO by now and the whole campaign to get SSBM into the tournament MONTHS ago.

But no, tell them a few days before hand, after all the tournaments are all set in stone. Now the EVO organizers had to scramble to fix things and apparently someone (and I'm sure he's not the only one) has to miss out on a tourney based on the previous information.

Total dick move.

Yep, it just comes across as a cheap move in really bad form all around.

I remember having somebody come to our college gaming club years ago during the XBOX/PS2/GCN era explaining the rules/regulations for running a tournament that involved cash. He warned us that a tournament for Smash is ill-advised because Nintendo had some form you had to fill out to use their games at public events like conventions, tournaments, or fund raisers. It had to be approved by Nintendo and then you were okay, but you had to disclose all the information about the event. We were told a big red flag was if prize money was involved. He said companies like Capcom (fighters), Microsoft (Halo), and most everyone else didn't care or had easy means to securing permission to use their games. Of course, this was like, 10 years ago. So who knows.

I don't doubt this at all. I have heard many times of how Nintendo seems to want nothing to do with the competitive fighting scene for Melee, Brawl, and the such.

At the same time they're trying to reap the rewards of using a network for quick financial gain. Nintendo is fine with doing DLC for their games, but anything after that strays too far from whatever they want to accomplish.

Smash Bros is trending worldwide at least now. I don't have any regional or feedbased trends set.

This doesn't make sense. And by that I mean it sounds insane.

It goes along with their begrudging acknowledge that hey maybe people cant or dont want to play with people in the same room. Its funny too cause SSBB was their first real attempt at an online play and it was a rushed pos that instead of giving it the massive legs Melee had probably hurt retention rate and ended up being a black mark on the game rather than a selling point.

Have to agree here. Really irritated. Unfortunately due to my job I couldn't make it to EVO this year so it's disappointing I can't enjoy it through a stream. Augh.

Maybe they want to get rid of the old SSB and all of the attention it'll potentially be getting at a venue like this and try to direct attention towards SSB4? No idea.

I'd like to write a well thought out post about why this sucks, but all that's coming to me is a stream of cuss words.

So fuck you nintendo. Why must you try and make me actively hate you?

Really they had to wait the Tuesday of the event to announce this shit. But no they had to fuck over their fans, and the tournament creators, just because of some legal shit that doesn't hurt sales at all. These people are their biggest fans, and they just don't give a damn. What really sucks, is Skullgirls could have been on the stream, but NOPE, WE NINTENDO LOL. Get with the fucking program Nintendo.

do you REALLY think that? if so, I'm going to step away from arguing.

The amount of hype generated from their 5 minute trailer would prove otherwise.

People want another Smash.

People definitely want another Smash. I don't think they want another Brawl as much, however. There's a lot more uncertainty about the quality of the series right now and they're going to release it on a platform that will have a significant disadvantage compared to where they were with the Wii. I think this is also part of their move to push the game onto the stronger 3DS platform; the confidence level isn't the same right now. The last thing they should be doing is putting strain on the same dedicated fanbase that generates so much talk for their series and helps push their initial week numbers.

Then be smart about it and demo exclusive debut of SSB4 footage or announce a character at the venue. EVO, Smash commmunity and Nintendo all win. But no. Nintendo just doesn' t have a full grasp of how to use and mobilize the communities for their own software.

Come the fuck on Nintendo. After Smash fans donated all that fucking money to charity. You're gonna pull this shit? Thought I was going to see some hype ass, high level Melee play. FUCK!

They are so fucking stupid for doing this. EVO is a huge stage to promote and advertise this IP. Having a good showing at EVO is only going to have a positive effect to their new Smash Bros game coming next year. Its going to peak interest into this series from players that never tried it. Hey Nintendo if you havent noticed, Wii U is selling like shit and 2 new consoles are launching later this year. Get your head out of your ass and notice the industry around you.

I figure they don't want to be part of the toxic FGC

With the rape jokes and whatnot

This is probably it, sadly. It's a silly and bizarre decision, but I bet they are terrified of kids streaming it and their parents overhearing the type of language typical for FGC matches being played over the top of a Nintendo game.

yknow how games go on sale on steam before the sequels come out? that's because the old drums up hype for the new. nintendo is actually losing money by doing this.

Evo is not your run of the mill major. It will be very clean, pc, with minimal cursing.

Nintendo is just completely out of touch here. It makes me so mad thinking about all those die hard fans who raised a hundred thousand dollars to get their game shown on the biggest stage of all get completely shit on a week before the event.

This is a travesty.
