There are people defending this on Miiverse. There are people who are saying it's selfish to want to stream the matches.

Just because it's Miiverse doesn't mean it isn't crawling with trolls.

Well, it would be pretty impressive for a multi-national gaming company to have not caught wind that fans of their game donated $90k for breast cancer research to have their chance to play at one of the largest fighting game tournaments in the world. I mean, really impressive.
And that's fair but OVERWHELMING odds are the people who Nintendo is trying to protect Smash's image for, like children, the elderly, and everyone else they're advertising to these days probably aren't going to be exposed to EVO anyway...
I keed with the advertising quip but seriously, if their worried about Smash being associated with various FGC stigmas then that's just dumb. They're fucking over the community over something that will make little difference and little impact on how the vast majority of gamers view this IP.
Welcome to Nintendo Land.
Perhaps.No - they aren't, your'e right.
but they will be on the news when another dumbshit noel brown incident happens at Evo.
Count it.
What I take away from this is that Nintendo's network related struggles go much deeper than simply having friend codes.
It's this sort of thing which is, to me, more telling. It suggests they do not understand networking more broadly. This is a social event; it is a way for a community of people who ostensibly enjoy their game to come together.
They seem to view the developments of communal, online gaming as some sort of alien force to be exterminated, and I think this serves them a profound disservice.
did they elaborate?
my christianity teacher in new orleans told us masturbation was a sin because it was selfish; we werent sharing our love. is it something cockamamie like that?
I sit here waiting to be more impressed. Can't wait for a PR response to truly impress me.It would be more impressive if they knew about it and still had the stream cancelled.
I figure they don't want to be part of the toxic FGC
With the rape jokes and whatnot
What I'm seeing is "they still get to play it and the money is still getting donated anyway so who cares if it's streamed or not?"

The point is that he needs to be aware of it because he's one of the few people who can actually do something about it.
THAT's why people are advocating reaching out to execs personal twitter pages. It lets people see things that would otherwise be "beneath them" in the corporate ladder.
This is basically how we helped get used game DRM removed from next gen, by the way.
Yeah, we would have won the drive for sure and who knows how many people would have shown up for the game in official status. Could have been anywhere between 200 and 300 people. Not gonna expect more with only 8 characters at the moment, but you my point.Wow really? Wow. Just wow.
Go fuck yourself Nintendo. The real tragedy is that Skullgirls got screwed for this bullshit.
Yea, after a lot of people probably had their travel reservations and shit booked... Just not cool
EVO probably could've got a Skullgirls thing going if they had enough time too. Such a baffling decision all around.
This is the worst part about it really.
There is no way that Nintendo doesn't know about EVO by now and the whole campaign to get SSBM into the tournament MONTHS ago.
But no, tell them a few days before hand, after all the tournaments are all set in stone. Now the EVO organizers had to scramble to fix things and apparently someone (and I'm sure he's not the only one) has to miss out on a tourney based on the previous information.
Total dick move.
I remember having somebody come to our college gaming club years ago during the XBOX/PS2/GCN era explaining the rules/regulations for running a tournament that involved cash. He warned us that a tournament for Smash is ill-advised because Nintendo had some form you had to fill out to use their games at public events like conventions, tournaments, or fund raisers. It had to be approved by Nintendo and then you were okay, but you had to disclose all the information about the event. We were told a big red flag was if prize money was involved. He said companies like Capcom (fighters), Microsoft (Halo), and most everyone else didn't care or had easy means to securing permission to use their games. Of course, this was like, 10 years ago. So who knows.
Said news will at worst get as far as Kotaku. Kotaku readers, broadly speaking, are not Nintendo's target market.

This, what the fuck nintendo. You have to be kidding. This was the whole reason people wanted it at EVO, to see it played at the highest level, at the highest stage.

Have to agree here. Really irritated. Unfortunately due to my job I couldn't make it to EVO this year so it's disappointing I can't enjoy it through a stream. Augh.Nintendo have disappointed me many times over the years, but I have stood by them.
This is the first thing they have done that has literally made me angry at them.
How STUPID can they be?

Nintendo's slothfulness and ignorance screwed over a lot of people here.
The Nintendo Bubble.
do you REALLY think that? if so, I'm going to step away from arguing.
The amount of hype generated from their 5 minute trailer would prove otherwise.
People want another Smash.
Maybe they want to get rid of the old SSB and all of the attention it'll potentially be getting at a venue like this and try to direct attention towards SSB4? No idea.
So quick to disapprove of something Nintendo does, but when MS pulls a dick move...
I figure they don't want to be part of the toxic FGC
