Nintendo of America not allowing SSBM to be streamed at EVO [Up: Decision Reversed]

I don't get Nintendo anymore. I lost a lot respect for them because the Smash Fan base is one of their most dedicated Nintendo fans who will most likely be there day 1 for Smash 4 among other titles and this is how they get treated.
For a company that has lasted so long on the appeal of its fanbase, they have completely lost touch with that fanbase now to the point they're going to be killing themselves if they keep these sort of legal policies in place.

Which is a shame as I generally enjoy most Nintendo games as I find they have that quirky spark of fun, but the way they've been treating life long fans, eh, I really don't see myself purchasing anything from them for a while unless they change their approach.

This fucking dumbass company could really use some new blood. Replace all the old skeletons and out-of-touch moron management with new people, from outside the company. When your policies look completely ridiculous to the very people who you're trying to sell games to, something has gone wrong.

This is completely incompetent of Nintendo. This is free damn advertising for them and all this is going to do is generate bad press for them with the very audience they want and need to sell Smash Bros. Hell to the audience they need to buy their core games if they want things to turn around for them with third parties. Why even allow the game to be played if they were going to act like this in the end.

IGN has a article up now, I'd link but I'm at work :(

Here you go.

What's wrong with that?

Sorry, I'm letting the situation get the better of me, but Nintendo as a corporate entity doesn't have a single system or policy in place that I respect. Their continued archaic perspective on video gaming has stunted their own growth and betrayed the loyalties of all their fans.

lol Feel bad for Skullgirls. They were 2nd? in the poll to be at EVO. Oh well at least it opens up a spot for next year assuming they don't put SMASH up for fan vote for EVO.

Edit: Oops confused it for another game.

Great - I'd love to see you and your merry men walking on this franchise.

I don't think it's possible for you to do it.

I'm more of a Smash fan than a Nintendo fan; last Nintendo product I owned was the Wii because of Brawl, and I no longer own either. Thing is, with the shape the Wii U is going to be in by the time this lands, they're going to need a strong presence of those hardcore fans to make their launch sales look remotely good compared to the combination of the Wii platform and positive mindshare coming off Melee. They don't need this; what they stand to gain is nebulous whereas the damage is going to be more measurable.

In this instance , maybe. As far as nintendo as a whole goes... the answer is variable,

Not condoning what they did by the way

the only thing I would say please to is your expectation to be reimbursed after you DONATED MONEY.

DONATED.

DO-NA-TED.

He didn't say he was expecting to get reimbursed.

No one around here said that, actually.

Stop taking what three people said on the smashboards as the official opinion for everyone that donated, kid.

Whatever the reasoning behind this, you don't pull this stunt so close to the event. This had PR nightmare written all over it. How could somebody at Nintendo not see this would happen?

You're high off your ass if you think people donated to help research for cancer. People voted to SEE THEIR FAVORITE GAME IN THE TOURNEY! People have every right to feel cheated of their money, even if it went to a good cause anyway.

Get out of here with that shit.

It's a dick move regardless, and the money was essentially donated under false pretenses. Every person who donated has a right to feel fucked over by Nintendo.

Was Nintendo approached when Melee was put on that poll? Just asking.

Are you kidding me.... and I donated money for it to support breast cancer research. I don't want my money back, however I feel like Nintendo is valuing the dollar more then the lives of many people who suffer breast cancer. Like I get they are a business who probably don't want Smash to be seen as a hardcore competitive game so they can market it easier to children but that's not worth the negative backlash they'll get for this.

People always like to take every opportunity they can to hate on Nintendo(especially here on GAF) but for once I actually feel like that hate is warranted. The way they handled this was horrible. They should have had the foresight to ask EVO to not allow it in advance. This is coming from a loyal Nintendo fan(even my Gaf name is inspired by them)

I didn't say that and ST or anyone else could have made up the difference as far as we know (maybe not likely).

Don't fucking put words in my mouth.

It's NoA, mate. They've been a shambles for a good long while now.

I'm not surprised by this, and it isn't anything new as far as I know. I remember watching a Video Games Live stream once and when they weren't allowed to show any footage they were using of Nintendo games either if I'm remembering correctly.

I mean, does EVO have a legal team? Did they look into this at all before promising a stream?

I'm not saying Nintendo's right or anything, but if EVO really cared they would have looked into any potential problems before making any promises.

Yeah man, always assume that when I say I'm a fan of X company when talking developers/publishers on GAF, I'm strictly talking about their output.

Nintendo is currently too much of a chimera fighting its parts right now to deserve any kind of accolades on the corporate side of things.

Evo is not your run of the mill major. It will be very clean, pc, with minimal cursing.

Nintendo is just completely out of touch here. It makes me so mad thinking about all those die hard fans who raised a hundred thousand dollars to get their game shown on the biggest stage of all get completely shit on a week before the event.

This is a travesty.

Unfortunately for Smash fans, Nintendo won't even put up with ANY cursing.... You ever hear any cursing in a Nintendo game?

Exactly.

If EVO reps could assure NIN that there would be absolutely NOTHING that would occur that Nintendo wouldn't want associated with their IP and Company, then I'm sure that they would consider allowing the stream...

...but can EVO really assure Ninty? That remains to be seen...

And I think Nintendo should be a little less paranoid about Lawsuits, and tell EVO to throw up a Rating Graphic on the bottom of the screen stating that this stream is NOT endorsed by Nintendo and Parental Guidance is Strongly Suggested...

Let's not turn this into some war against Nintendo fans. This is a Nintendo game and the people who should be upset about this to begin with are fans of Nintendo games.

Those are tailored trends; nothing related to this is trending worldwide.

I just checked a trending site (i'm not a twitter member myself) and Smash Bros and EVO are in fact trending all over the U.S. Don't know how much more convincing you can get than this.

About the voting - we don't know really right - did Nintendo not clarify it before or did EVO mess up the details?

The link won't load for me.

do you REALLY think that? if so, I'm going to step away from arguing.

The amount of hype generated from their 5 minute trailer would prove otherwise.

People want another Smash.

People want another smash while Melee is the one that is competitively always endorsed. To be honest, People want another smash just because it's smash, but mostly people still love to play melee and it obviously isn't changing. This move alone just shows how bad Nintendo wants to kill that community.

Lmao, I love the posts from the nintendo fans on Miiverse that are clueless to what is EVO.

"Don't Leave Nintendo Guys:("

People are threatening to stop buying games and sell their wiiu's ! hahaha

What a smart company would do:
1) Pay for a dedicated stream of the game.
2) Have intermittent commercials for the new Smash Bros.
3) Have two character reveals during Evo weekend (Saturday and Sunday).
4) Fly Sakurai out for a panel to discuss the future of the game with fans (let him see how much fun people have playing competitively).
5) Use the opportunity to talk about what great people Nintendo fans are for helping breast cancer research funding.

What Nintendo did:
"No."

There are people defending this on Miiverse. There are people who are saying it's selfish to want to stream the matches.

How is this surprising? If Nintendo outlawed the recording, and uploading, of their video games to the internet as a whole a ton of people would be right up there supporting them. And a large portion would no doubt be from this forum. Fanboys will rationalize absolutely anything to defend the object of their obsession.

I'd argue as far as their region locking, their eShop policies, and their online integration as well. I'm sure we can name more if we try.

Those are all things I do not enjoy.

However I can name far more nintendo ventures that are the results of trying new shit than one might think.

Nintendo did a shitty thing sure, don't pretend they aren't the fucking big N though.

I believe there are merits in the banning of Let's plays of complete single player campaigns of new games.

Multiplayer videos are much different. The positives for marketing are much more clear with no negatives.

Well, they're allowed to actually play the game in a competitive environment where money trades hands, so I'm sure that Nintendo required a form/agreement in place, as they have in the past. I'm sure they were aware of it, but I can't answer your question more fully.

reimbursement doesn't need to mean money. streaming your game is 'reimbursement' for what you paid for, it's a good or service. i have no idea what you're talking about.

And you're being a dick. The prize for donating the most money was having said game get streamed at Evo, and now Nintendo has removed that. Of course people are going to get pissed off.

where?

Information

The game whose community raises the most money to help find a cure for breast cancer will be the final game at this year's EVO. You can help get your game there by donating yourself or forwarding this page to your friends and relatives.

All proceeds from the donation drive will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (http://www.bcrfcure.org/).

You or whoever else donated for Breast Cancer research, that was the intent of your donation.

The group that got the most got their game in this year's evo.

Donation fulfilled.

Fire Emblem Awakening had at least one instance of "bastard" (IIRC, Sully S support with the avatar).

There's got to be some reason for NoA to make that decision, I just can't think of what it could possibly be. Whatever their reason is, it's a dumb one.

Nintendo is innovative as far as their hardware is concerned. Their policies suck, and they always have.

Maybe something more like a hydra or a Cerberus lol.

Edit: There is some photoshop potential here for those who have played HotD II or seen Venture Brothers lol.
