T-minus 25 minutes to launch. The theater I'm in is packed, no kidding—ginormous theatres, two of which are being used (and already partitioned for the press). Just about every demographic imaginable, too. It's going to be a bawdy house tonight.

Movies like this are better with a bawdy house in my opinion. You feed off the energy of the crowd. I remember the audience being energetic as hell at Fast Six, yet somber as hell at Man of Steel (which seems the opposite of many audiences GAFfers have had).

But BOO to the getting a side row. I usually show up an hour early on opening nights (or earlier depending on the film) just to get choice of seats.
 
I'm thrilled this is getting good reviews. That's the only thing that could save this from bombing after the awful trailers and poor word of mouth.

I'll be seeing it Friday night. Hoping for an energetic crowd!

I wasn't planning on seeing this during the weekend but somehow I just bought tickets for Thursday night. Getting hyped.

I don't understand Variety. They did this great cover story on the film in May, and I guess del Toro must've pissed them off or something because they've been doing everything in their power to make sure this movie gets negative buzz. From bullcrap "tracking" articles to grumpy editorials to a pretentious negative review, it seems like Variety's pulling out all the stops.

I hope it succeeds in a big way just so we can see the smug look drop off their nonexistant faces.

That's what I thought was the plan in the first place. The "first" showing would get the poster. Well, at least that's how I thought it was gonna be. There was only a 10pm listing on Fandango's website for the last week but then a 7pm showing was added today. So I'm not sure what's gonna happen with that poster :/
 
At this point, just hope that good word of mouth will give the movie some legs at the box office, especially if the movies coming out continue to suck. It likely will not open as well as we'd all like, but a good movie at least has a chance to recoup from a slow start while a bad one has little hope.
 
People bitching about critics are hilarious, since in aggregate they are rarely off the mark, and they aren't panning this film anyway. Without critics garbage like transformers would rule the film industry, someone has the hold the rein of standards and they are doing a hell of a better job than people on neogaf.

Sometimes I don't understand movie studios.

Whatever it is the split they are having, may the gods bless Legendary people for giving GDT a couple hundred million to make a mecha movie of all fucking things. If I had billions of dollars I'd give them all to him just to make the movies he wants
and after he's gone through all the money, forever roam the streets with my only remaining possessions: a supermarket car filled with sealed blu-ray copies of all those films.

They can't stop those films from making money, they can promote smaller films which they are much better at. Everybody knows this, don't be absurd. But without critics there are no tastemakers calling bullshit on day one, they can define the terms of what has artistic merit and what doesn't, and that matters in maintaining film as an art form.
 
One of my favorite critics, Tom Shone, posted this on his twitter:

Call off the hounds! The most lovingly crafted bit of blockbuster sublimity since Cameron's Avatar, review to come

He gave it an A-, which is a rare grade, only other film this year he gave that to was Before Midnight, which by most accounts was a great film just like the last two.

I like Tom Shone a lot. He's clearly very educated and articulate in his love of cinema, but his favorite director is Steven Spielberg, and is not above praising a well-done blockbuster.

That's probably the most realistic outcome. Lets hope it has steady legs domestically like MoS has had.

Aside from Iron Man 3, Pacific Rim seems to be the only summer 2013 blockbuster where the RT critical summary doesn't mention reservations about any flaws the film might have. Nice, nice.

Edit: RT has changed it.

That's the Gypsy Danger figure. The picture I posted is the prototype for Wave 2's Striker Eureka (Australia).

The toys are about as kid friendly as any NECA figure. NECA's a mixed bag because the great figures are sturdy and quality while the lesser figures have awful QC.

The Pacific Rim figures are definitely quality, but there's a few issues that might be present on some of them:
  • Crimson Typhoon is a little top heavy, and his legs don't support him well during certain poses.
  • As stated before, Gypsy Danger can't do many dynamic poses.
  • Knifehead's...well, knife head...is INCREDIBLY pointy and sharp. Like sharp sharp. Did I mention sharp?
  • Some very minor paint issues on certain toys. Try to look at them in person before buying.
If you have any more doubts then check some YouTube reviews. I guarantee that you'll love the figures and that they should be rather kid friendly.
