There's a petition for asking Microsoft To Bring Back Xbox One's DRM

Petition: http://www.change.org/petitions/microsoft-give-us-back-the-xbox-one-we-were-promised-at-e3-2

Using Change.org to put their point across, a David Fontenot leads the charge with a petition description so ridiculous that it just seems surreal...

"This was to be the future of entertainment. A new wave of gaming where you could buy games digitally, then trade, share or sell those digital licenses. Essentially, it was Steam for Xbox. But consumers were uninformed, and railed against it, and it was taken away because Sony took advantage of consumers uncertainty.

We want this back. It can't be all or nothing, there must be a compromise."

I could easily believe that maybe this is just an elaborate troll if there was some sense of irony about it – if perhaps there was a more stilted tone to the plea instead of one that comes across as at least sincere and coherent. Maybe if the signatures required was a value set to 180 instead of 200, or maybe if this Fontenot didn't try to use Steam as an example – and by all means you cannot use Steam as a comparison to the Xbox One's former DRM policies for obvious reasons (and for those not bothered to click the link, it's because Microsoft doesn't do half of what Valve does to give back to the gaming community).

How could they miss the benefits of the Family Sharing Plan?

I love restrictions. I want always online DRM. I want the game rental business to become obsolete. I don't want to let my friends borrow games, because fuck them. All I care about is my god damn new age console that'll blow everything else out of the water! Fuck the PS4 and fuck those Sony guys for catering to fans who care about their gaming experience. Fuck PC, that shit is stupid. Steam? Fuck that shit. They never have sales or anything. It's not as affordable as buying my games from the XBL marketplace. I love Microsoft and their business practices will be the best forever. Fuck yes. <3 Xbox.

I really wish MS wouldn't turn 180 on DRM policies, and those who are supporting them would live happily ever after...not.

Think about it...there's a DRM defense force.

Such a notion would be unthinkable outside of corporate meeting rooms, but here we are.

Hmm

I loved what MS was bringing to the table. There has to be a better way to compromise so we don't lose the future of gaming.

Please don't Abandon your original xbox one plans. They were the future of gaming.

Forward progress, a future where DRM isn't a 4 letter word.

A Future where Creators/Publishers agree with Consumers on how the consumers can manage the digital content they purchase.

The ideas were bold, forward thinking and brought about a new level of convenience and simplicity to the console. These were the ideas that convinced me to pre-order an Xbox One rather than a PS4. Now they're gone and I've already put down a deposit on the basis of what you promised at E3. I feel you've let me down, but more importantly you've let yourselves down for not believing in your ideas. Once people experienced the Xbox One for themselves I am convinced they'd have been blown away by the leap forward in ease of use etc, instead it's now an expensive PS4.

Family sharing could still come back. Probably wouldn't be with as many people as originally planned but trying to get it back via this is just stupid.

There is no reason MS can't offer trading, reselling digital and the family plan on all digital purchases. It's telling that since they don't have control over ALL games they won't offer these 'future of gaming' console plans.

Always online would have made more sense if there were no internet caps and there was never a fear of losing your connection to the internet.

It's simply premature. Maybe 2 gens from now it'll be appropriate (assuming the internet undergoes rapid advancement by then).

"A new wave of gaming where you could buy games digitally, then trade, share or sell those digital licenses."

Was this actually a thing? I was under the impression you could only sell/trade retail copies, and to select retailers since they would have to deactivate the game somehow.

Yes, you could have full shared games with up to ten people. They removed that when they reversed the DRM.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Some people liked the idea with being able to install the game 100% and also being able to give it away to one person or sell it at selected retailers. There is also that family sharing program.
Oh boy, that thing that could only have been a one hour trial? Yay!!

What is so weird about this? Plenty of people surround themselves with devices like iPhones and have completely abandoned physical media. Wouldn't the super DRM xbox one be a good device for them?

Some of this DRM has become the source of a revisionist history - some people believe that the DRM was a good thing, but it was evidently clear at the time that the pros of such a stance were far outwayed by the negatives. indeed, it became clear that these digital sharing plans were not as great as they seemed: the family sharing plan was only a 60 minute demo, and you could only trade or sell a digital license once. Other plans like the always online were justified by vague promises of the 'cloud' but (rightly) interpreted by gamers as an unnecessary form of DRM which was designed to keep an eye on us at all times. The Xbone before the 180 was not a good thing, and nor was it the 'future', unless you believe that the future holds a dystopian dark age for gamers.

Besides, there is no reason why the version of the 'family sharing plan' that revisionists believe in cannot exist with the current Xbone.

I can´t help myself thinking that OP has a biased agenda.

You wrote EDGE how biased they are too, right? /jk

Now back on topic -

Microsoft: "We listened to what the fans want and we are bringing back DRM. Yayyyyyyy"

Holy shit this was basicaly my first thought too, because you know, MS did really stupid things earlier this year. "Fans wanted it back and we listened!"

The fact that there are people who say "I don't care" when I tell them that we might not be able to play our games 15 years down the line if Microsoft were to go through with this DRM stuff legitimately frightens me.

As Stump said before, the DRM system in place was a worst-of-both-worlds system because it had to accommodate an Xbone retail presence. You can be in favour of those marginally beneficial things and not want Xbone's DRM back, but it does mean a no-disc-drive version of Xbone.
