Cerny: PS4 will rekindle diversity of PSOne era

From Cerny's develop conference talk

During his keynote presentation at the Develop Conference in Brighton this morning, PS4 chief architect Mark Cerny predicted a "renaissance of gaming", fuelled by indie titles, that will echo the early years of PlayStation.

"With PSone there was no way to make an indie title," he said. "The hardware didn't support digital downloads and all games were distributed on CD-ROMS. There was no way for creators to directly reach their audience.

...

"With the release of PlayStation 4, we understand we have an opportunity to fundamentally alter the landscape of gaming," Cerny continued.

"On PS4, I believe the indie paradigm will have the hardware as enabler, not as the central player, which is to say that Octodad isn't about the triangle count, it's about keeping your cephalopod nature a secret from your human family."

"On the business side, we've had a bit of an epiphany," Cerny said. "Since Adam Boyes joined SCE, pretty much the whole process has been overturned. He wanted us to look at the day in the life of an indie developer, and challenged us to explain whether our processes were helping or hindering the creation of the diverse titles we were looking for.

"We ended up radically simplifying concept approval. We fully support self-publishing across all platforms, so it's now possible for developers to maintain complete creative and financial control. We now pretty much support any business model, whether it be buy-to-play, free-to-play, episodic or micro-transactions. And we're doing what we can to support indie development financially as well, whether that be through loaner dev kits or our incubation program or direct support from the Pub Fund.

"We also understand that accessibility is paramount. So we've gone from putting our process out front to putting people out front, which is to say your indie journey on PS4 as a developer begins by tweeting Shahid Ahmad, not by filling out a form."

Sounds promising. Let's hope it actually happens.

I hope so, it is why so many people loved the PSX and PS2, it had something for everyone, regardless of your tastes, chances are the consoles had games catered to you.

Sounds VERY promising indeed. In particular the "financial control" of the games. That means we can see price drops more frequently, or even sales.

It will be interesting to see how increased developer access affects the marketplace. Will it be more App Store than XBLA/PSN? I'd imagine that f2p will become a much bigger thing there not only because of industry-wide trends but because it will be necessary to get enough visibility to survive.

I get the impression Sony's constant talk of indie developers is more about reflecting the changes done internally at the company as opposed to suggesting indie devs being a selling point for the hardware (take the Vita, for example). It's great that these small developers are getting better support now, but its not something that really entices me to spend hundreds on a box, Sony. I'm actually part of the contingent that wants to hear about polygon count and console features.

All I ask is for return of medium budget fighters and beat em ups. If Sony can provide that, ill die a happy man.

But yes, just like Vita on the PS4, Sony increasingly needs to cater for the impluse gamer who doesnt care about story, cutscenes and just wants to play something fun and addictive. There has to be a middle ground between the App store and AAA titles.

Not only that, but indie titles fill the games inbetween software droughts so players are constantly playing and more importantly for Sony, constantly buying new games.

"We also understand that accessibility is paramount. So we've gone from putting our process out front to putting people out front, which is to say your indie journey on PS4 as a developer begins by tweeting Shahid Ahmad, not by filling out a form."

Sounds like a légère way.

It would be amazing if japanese developers were able to return to the level of creativity and diversity they enjoyed during the Psone era.

They seem to be going PS1esque with some of their policies, ie focusing on ease of development and catering to 3rd parties instead of making some esoteric, hard-to-program for box and telling developers to deal with it.

Bring the JRPGs os PS1 era and I'm happy.

Yes plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, man I miss those RPGs :(

Personally I think MS & Ninty have the 1 up on diversity due to the their available controls, wish Sony didn't axe the camera from the SKU just for those initial sales. So much potential wasted.

Cerny needs to keep a lower profile and start making Knack a fun game. He is on a fast track to become the new Cevat Yerli of PR.

Based on announced Japanese support, no. Won´t happen anymore.

IPad says hi.

Knack looks great. More excited for Knack than I am for any of the other launch titles.

Deal with it ;)

The weird thing is that PS4 really does feel like PS1 to me. It's hard to put into words but when people bring up the idea of the PS4 being the second coming of the PS2, it just doesn't feel right... but when I think of how it felt first experiencing the original Playstation all those years ago and when I think of what is to come of the PS4, I get a very similar feeling.

If we get another

Suikoden
Vandal Hearts
Azure Dreams
Psychic Force
Legend of Dragoon
Destruction Derby
South Park rally (yes it was a good game >.<)
KKND
Star Ocean
Legend of Legaia
Wild Arms
Grandia
Breath of Fire
Alundra
Arc the Lad
Lunar

then i would be more than just stoked and would call it a PS1 era
