Cerny: PS4 will rekindle diversity of PSOne era

Great shout out to Shahid. That guy is doing wonders too. Adam Boyes, Shahid, Nick Suttner and Shane Bettenhausen will be in the forefront in this independent strategy at Sony. Seems that they are doing an excellent job so far.

I get the impression Sony's constant talk of indie developers is more about reflecting the changes done internally at the company as opposed to suggesting indie devs being a selling point for the hardware (take the Vita, for example). It's great that these small developers are getting better support now, but its not something that really entices me to spend hundreds on a box, Sony. I'm actually part of the contingent that wants to hear about polygon count and console features.
Didn't Sony give us an eight pound bag of polygon counts? More so than any any other console creator in gaming history?

Sir, your hunger is fantastic!

Because 90% of the games announced for the PS4 seem to be the same variety of AAA (in terms of budget) western games with bloated development costs that are mainly FPS and open-world sandbox games.

Not true. A good chunk - certainly more than 10% - are games from small devs. Maybe more like 30+%, and probably a proportion that will grow over its lifecycle.

Didn't shahid quit twitter for a bit after the backlash

If Cerny can deliver a AAA highly researched and inspired 3D Action Adventure Platformer akin to R&C and J&D I will be ecstatic.
Not Knack

I hope we get more of those previous games, but a new Mascot game is needed for the PS4.

I keep hearing quotes from Cerny about how great the PS4 is going to be and how similar it's going to be to the PS1 in terms of game library and development, but until they actually prove it I'm not buying into anything he's saying. Because 90% of the games announced for the PS4 seem to be the same variety of AAA (in terms of budget) western games with bloated development costs that are mainly FPS and open-world sandbox games.

Sony got 8 independent developers on stage at their E3 conference demoing their games running live on the PS4. The Witness is a great get for the platform as a console exclusive. Conan O'Brien inadvertently gave Hohokum great exposure in his E3 segment. Transistor is also a great get. Some of them if not most will appear on Xbox. And the Xbox also has Below and Swery's next game as some great indie games. But there's no doubt that the emphasis given to those type of games and the kind of relationship Sony wants to create with these developers is somewhat refreshing and revolutionary. Nothing that Microsoft or Nintendo couldn't emulate, and I'm sure they will, but Sony will gather the benefits first for those moves.

I really miss the diversity of the PSone era (that I found later only on the DS), so I hope this turns out to be true
The PS2 has game about a mosquito. It is probably a lot closer to the PSOne in terms of diversity than the DS. It is probably more diverse than DS and PSOne considering the amount of games you can buy. There are 3840 PS2 games, 1400 more than the PSOne, 2600 more than the DS.

Good. Just last night I was thinking about how much I'd love to see next-gen games thematically similar to Afrika and Aquanaut's Holiday. SCEJ certainly has enough crazy ideas, and hopefully now it will be easier to make them reality.

Did the PS2 not happen in your world? Plenty of diversity there.

Obviously, it's a matter of tastes and sensations. To me PSOne and DS were the two console that gave me this feelings.
I had a PS2 and I still have the feeling that was more "consolidating" than "innovating", but once again it's not a critics to the PS2 and not a "truth" sentence, just MY sensation about those consoles.

A lot of people asking for JRPGs in this thread about indie titles has me wondering... is there a significant indie scene in Japan that makes RPGs? There was never any need for RPGs to die out like they did, they just needed to learn to scale back the production costs (or rather, learn to not let the production costs skyrocket). I don't need FFXIII graphics, I don't need voice acting, I don't need orchestral soundtracks. I just want my JRPGs :(

I want to believe, but just can't (after E3)
I haven't got even Trails in the Sky HD PS3, fgs, makes me very skeptical.

Exactly. This PR is meant to bring a message out there to indie devs, not necessarily to end consumers.

I think we are already starting to see the fruits of their labours on the vita. I agree with cerny, if you look at the triple A industry, you are looking at stagnation. There are refinements of gameplay, yes, but little innovation. The experimental ideas are all coming from the indies, and I love that.

I like the sentiment but it's a little misleading to couch it in terms of PS1 development. What he really meant is the PS4 will take the current diversity already found on the PC platform and move some of it to the PS4.

No need to hearken back to 1995 - although I understand why he did.

I'm just happy that there's a chance to see some of them find larger audiences on a home console.

Hmmm

*looks at last eight years of gaming*

*looks at E3*

*remembers that PS3/360 had these same digital capabilities*

I'm not so sure about that...
Well, a lot of that was the Japanese support which I touched on with the next quoted post, but E3's kind of the place to show big, flashy games. If his hopes pan out we probably won't be seeing them until sometime next year, and probably more from indie devs than any mid tier devs.
It would be amazing if japanese developers were able to return to the level of creativity and diversity they enjoyed during the Psone era.
I can't help but wonder if that's the result of hitting at the right time as kids weened on the NES grew up and were teenagers/young adults. Then when they grew past THAT it all collapsed entirely, unable to fully recover? We'll see, but I kind of expect they're quite happy to stay on handhelds now.
Ice cold....
Unfortunately THAT would be a compliment. Still did respectably well, and housed many of Nintendo most ground breaking, revolutionary non-NES games. The games they showed at E3 look good, but they're very much safe designs, if anything this is GC v2.

console jrpgs are dieing :(

Also, don't underestimate Adam Boyes' influence on this reborn Sony.

He gave me very good vibes at the E3 conference, sounds like a suit who actually is first and foremost a gamer at heart.

it does both though.

but the big budget stuff is getting less and less innovative, and supporting indies is a smart way to have the next breakout hit like minecraft on your platform.

and the power available means that middle tier developers can produce great looking titles relatively easily

I'm looking forward to it personally

If we get another

Suikoden
Vandal Hearts
Azure Dreams
Psychic Force
Legend of Dragoon
Destruction Derby
South Park rally (yes it was a good game >.<)
KKND
Star Ocean
Legend of Legaia
Wild Arms
Grandia
Breath of Fire
Alundra
Arc the Lad
Lunar

then i would be more than just stoked and would call it a PS1 era

I find lists/requests like this really funny. I too would love to see new entries to the majority of these games, but let's be real. Times have changed, the companies that produced all of these interesting and "diverse" games are way different now than they were before, and the people/teams that were responsible for making these great games have either disbanded or moved on.

Seriously, which internal, Japanese team at Konami could make a competent Vandal Hearts or Suikoden today? Do you also really think a modern day Capcom could produce something like Breath of Fire IV? Media Vision, the developer responsible for Wild ARMs, they've been making Chaos Rings for iPhone. The man responsible for Wild ARMs left to make his own studio (Witch-something?) years ago and now makes cell-phone games too, I believe. Same with Matrix Software, the guys responsible for Alundra. They've gone on to make Final Fantasy Dimensions on the iPhone. We're NEVER going to "get back" what we loved so much about the PSone (and the PS2 for the matter). People/developers can certainly simulate that era and provide games that sort of remind us of the past, but nothing will ever quite capture the essence of the PSone era.

Cerny thinks he can rekindle that fire through the indie scene, but it's not the same kind of fire that I've grown to love. I'm not buying this.

console jrpgs are dieing :(

I have this weird feeling that the next crop of amazing JRPGs... with graphics a la PS1 onward... will somehow be created in the west as either full or episodic indie titles. While I'm not a fan of either of the following games, Saturday Morning RPG and the latest Penny Arcade RPGs show that there's interest in the west in rekindling interest in this genre. The only thing though is that we'll need to be patient in order to see stand out hits. But as of right now, I'm curious about Dragon Fantasy: Book II (link is a written preview of the game), which is apparently coming out on the Vita and PS3 as well.

Also, I feel that JRPGs will also live on portables. Color me crazy, but the portable format allows you to be able to play your 40+ hour RPGs anywhere, so you can get progress in it (even if it's just a few minutes or a battle or two) and put it on standby at any time without having to worry about finding a save point.

Anyway, I digress... saying that the PS4 will have the diversity of PSOne is a good thing, and I'm glad that Sony is acknowledging this.

For a second i was happy, because i thought of games like ColonyWars, G-Police, Destruction Derby....but he was talking about Download Only IndiGames.

It's now impossible for me to read Cerny's words without hearing his sweet dulcet tones speaking them. Love it.

lets try an experiment..

Mark Cerny said the following at the Brighton conference: "Good news everyone!"

now, who's voice did you hear?

Tons of JRPGs continue to be released right now, but no one buys them. I'm not sure why anyone here thinks the PS4 will change things.

Perhaps if Sony took the lead and published some JRPGs of its own that were actually advertised.

So if something like that came out, it would automatically be negated because it's download only?

I don't get this logic.

I'm going out on a limb here, but maybe it's not that they're poorly advertised but that to some people JRPGs look the same? I know personally of people who think that just because the artwork is based on manga/anime styles that they think the stories are all the same. Like when people say that Ni no Kuni and Tales of Vesperia are one and the same just because it's the same "animu" artwork. Ugh. Frustrating.
