Cerny: PS4 will rekindle diversity of PSOne era

Cerny needs to keep a lower profile and start making Knack a fun game. He is on a fast track to become the new Cevat Yerli of PR.

Yerli didn't create a console. Cerny's talking about his overall vision for the PS4, not his vision for his individual game.

I'd agree Knack seems like it could use some extra time in the oven though. We'll see at release - I think it's really great he's made a conscious effort to make a family friendly game.

sounds interesting (like anything cerny says).
any chance of a video of his keynote (couldn´t find anything on the conference website)?

If we get another

Suikoden
Vandal Hearts
Azure Dreams
Psychic Force
Legend of Dragoon
Destruction Derby
South Park rally (yes it was a good game >.<)
KKND
Star Ocean
Legend of Legaia
Wild Arms
Grandia
Breath of Fire
Alundra
Arc the Lad
Lunar

then i would be more than just stoked and would call it a PS1 era

Add a new Crash and WipEout and I'm down.

While I think the PS1 was more diverse than what we have now I still would not argue that it was diverse especially in the context of today if that makes sense.

PS1 had hold of a younger crowd that in their efforts to keep force feeding those same people through the generations they seem to be completely missing that segment today. And of course in the contemporary context they are missing the older and the female segments too which weren't big populations on PS1 or PS2 either.

Can't wait to see if the rumored JRPG he's working on is true

If SCEJ is working on a JRPG I really doubt that Cerny is involved. He's overseeing the roll out of new hardware and helping with Knack already. There are only so many hours in the day.

That is some nice PR work there by Cerny. I highly, highly, highly doubt that.

You're looking at it the wrong way. You probably expect it from AAA devs but diversity will come from indie and small studios that will use PS4's simple architecture to their advantage.

I really hope so.

PSOne and PS2 were the kings in this field. I think I have over 60 PS2 games, probably closer to 70.
PS3? Around 20-25.

All games, all sizes, in a variety of prices. Something for everyone, and no one is left out. This is why PC is so amazing.

If PS4 gets anywhere near that, it will be an amazing console.

I just hope we see more 3D and less 2D games from indie developers.

Please led me add another The Misadventures of Tron Bonne :D But seriously I hope they can somehow manage what he says even though I'm sadly a bit doubtful :(

This should be interesting, If they sincerely go this direction, they would be seeking to put behind the established publishers to build new. It would be a great strategy to recover from the likely slacking support from the DRM refusal.

Everybody in here is asking for sequels would be disappointed. It's more about creating new legacies than reviving old ones.

Well the PS1 did have Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre. I'd be overjoyed if the PS4 matched only half of that output.

I really don't anyone who was silly enough to suggest "JRPGs" and proceeded to daydream have read the OP.

The whole point of that segment is the newfound focus on indies and the availability of various delivery methods.

So how about we stop posting lists full of dusty games?!

HE'S ONLY A MAN!!!

:p

PC has rekindled it. Or has become the home platform for that movement.

But PS4 is the console that looks to most leverage that work, and that's great. It might even be, voluntarily, a 'first'/home platform for some indies, but PC will still be the starting point for the bigger majority I think.

I'm not sure how big indie PC development is in Japan, though? Maybe a console like PS4 could actually help start a new approach there, vs riding on the coat tails a movement already in force on another platform.

I keep hearing quotes from Cerny about how great the PS4 is going to be and how similar it's going to be to the PS1 in terms of game library and development, but until they actually prove it I'm not buying into anything he's saying. Because 90% of the games announced for the PS4 seem to be the same variety of AAA (in terms of budget) western games with bloated development costs that are mainly FPS and open-world sandbox games.
