Remembering Ryan Davis, 1979 - 2013

I think Ryan shared enough of his life with people he didn't know. I think you guys should show some decency and respect and stop asking about the cause.

I listened to Ryan's final Bombcast again at my desk and it was definitely strange. They open the show joking about pouring one out for Easy E, who also died young. Then Ryan makes a bunch of jokes about dying. Plans for a The Last of Us spoilercast. Talks about next-gen being only a few months away and speculating what it's going to be like for them. And of course his wedding. An unusual amount of discussion pertaining to mortality and future plans... normally no one would even think back to that afterwards, but given that he died it's just kind of eerie. But all in all, in what would (as fucked up as it is) be his final podcast ever, he went out being vintage Ryan and given what he talked about, as morbid as it may seem, it was probably as fitting as ever for preceding something COMPLETELY unexpected.

I hope the show can properly carry on without him. I have my doubts. Ryan really, as stated numerous times on the latest show, had a way of bringing people together and moving the convo along. It's a hard quality to come by especially in the world of gaming/gaming journalism. Not to mention, his humor and wit and all the intricate qualities that went along with it are irreplaceable. I dunno if Jeff can do the show without him. The site, sure. I hope they continue to do episodes but it's going to take quite some time to rework the formula, I think.

They've done a couple of ryan-less podcast which were pretty great, so I'm sure they'll adapt. It'll take awhile though.

Eh, they were never as good without him, but I am sure they all knew that. The real challenge is where to go from here knowing he is no longer with us.

I have a lot of respect for all of them but I won't lie, any time there was a show without Ryan I felt less inclined to listen. He just made the fucking show. There's kind of a chemistry between him and Jeff in how they operated things, too.

I just feel so bad for Ryan, his co-workers, his family, his wife... it's just a fucking tragedy no matter how you try to digest it.

Yeah, Jeff is a fine host. And if they can bring in Rorie or Drew occasionally as the fourth chair, maybe even Klepek on Skype (it sounded fine on the latest episode) then the podcast will live on as one of the best around.

But Ryan, Jeff, Vinny and Brad as a foursome will never be matched. Simply won't happen. The dynamic of those four in the studio together on the show was basically perfect. And it's a damn shame we'll never hear that again.

He'll also be irreplaceable with live events. He was great hosting the E3 casts, their event panels, and other livestreams in the office. The host role was such a flawless fit for him.

Ugh this thread has taken a turn for the worse in the last pages.

To be honest I was surprised to see it lasted so long without devolving into stupid arguments. It's gaf, after all.

Lots of nice tributes, but at this point its probably better if it starts falling off the front page or gets locked before we all embarass ourselves.

Who else will drink breast milk as readily as he did? :(

I agree though. JRVB were one of the greatest groups in podcasting, and we will never get that back. :(

The only four that I could ever imagine matching the Ryan, Jeff, Vinny, Brad combo would be throwing in Rich Gallup or Dave but neither of those are gonna happen either.

While the audio quality of the skype was fine, the interaction quality wasn't there at all. Every time either of the skype guys chimed in, the rest of the room seemed to stop in its tracks in order to not interrupt.

The guys riffing off each other is what always made the podcast great, and the physical and time barrier imposed by Skype are a big detriment to it. I'd rather have Drew and/or Rorie on regularly than have Alex and/or Patrick on via Skype.

Personally I think Vinny should be the new host. Jeff's good as a substitute host because he's almost got that "substitute teacher" vibe where the whole flow of the podcast changes to something a little goofier/sloppier and it's fun every once in a while. Vinny used to do a great job hosting the Hotspot.

I was really disappointed a couple weeks ago to hear that Patrick wouldn't regularly be on the show anymore, because he had carved out his own niche and had become a great part of the cast as well. His absence will be magnified now, for sure.

Completely agree. Podcasts done through skype and such is just never the same as having the people in the same room.

In one of his last podcasts, Ryan made that same point. It is the visual cues which keep the flow, a skyped in caller can never be sure when to start talking as well as the slight delays etc

The Player One Podcasts always seems to work pretty well, and now recently they started using Google Hangout to have video of everyone, and that's a nice addition too.

I'm down with Vinny as host. I forgot about his Hotspot days. And yeah, sucks about Patrick leaving. I warmed up to him big time this year.

And you guys are probably right about the Skype thing. Oh well, just have to wait and see what they do I guess.

I think they will have to bring somebody new in - regardless of who will be hosting.

With Patrick gone and Vinny mostly tied up in video production there is basically only Brad & Jeff left to provide content on a regular basis.

Guys, please stop speculating about the cause of death.

I think it will be very uncomfortable for me if there's an internet thread speculating about the death of people close to me. So I suppose the same thing would apply for Ryan's family and friends too.

Please stop speculating okay ? If they wanted to tell us later on, then so be it. Else it shouldn't matter.

I hope neither Amy Winehouse nor Heath Ledger's family and friends read gaf.

I dunno-- I listen to a bunch of Skype based podcasts and they work. Recently Rebel FM moved to using Skype and it's been fine (usually with only 1 person Skyping in). Player One podcast has always used Skype and its excellent. TWIT has based their business on using Skype (with a mix of Skype and in-studio guests), and they are fine. CAGCast is also Skype based and that's one of my favourite podcasts.

So it definitely can work.

I think its going to be a while before they hire someone. I think mentally, it's going to be so tough for them to hire someone in the near future because it will feel as if they are trying to replace Ryan, which they will never be able to do.

Also, just thinking about the office, it's going to be a nightmare for them because they will probably never ever want to fill Ryan's seat or desk with someone else. If I was there, I'd recommend that they completely rearrange the seating just so that they don't think about a new guy coming in and taking Ryan's seat.

I don't think they'll feel that way. Realistically now they really need to bring someone else in to simply handle the workload, and they were probably already thinking about it because Patrick had moved away.

I'm sure they'll take their time and choose someone who fits in really well, though, and until then they're lucky to be in a building with so many other people working in the gaming industry. There's plenty of people to fill in on the Bombcast and appear in quick looks and whatever else before they hire someone full time.

Man, so weird to even think about =[

Can you imagine being the first hire after Ryan Davis has moved on? Holy shit. I'm certainly no professional journalist, but I'd be nervous as fuck. Whoever they get will never be half as good.

unless they pull some sort of insane stunt hiring and get like...Jeff Green or something :P

I'm of the opinion that they'll shift an existing staff member to the position and fill the void that creates with some new blood.

I hate speculating on this, it makes me feel dirty, but my mind drifts to it because I care about GB that much.

Speculation about causes of death happen in every thread, in every forum, since Internet pre-history.
I don't see why people should be banned en-masse just because he was worshipped by a small (relative to "normal" celebrities) fan-base here who want to see nothing but sadness from other posters.
Being disrepectful to the dead, sure, ban away, but people are going to speculate and state some uncomfortable facts (he was a morbidly-obese guy who smoked) mixed in with some fear or hope that it won't/might happen to them if they could just know the cause.
Natural human instinct.

This, to some extent. A guy drops dead at 34, of course people are gonna get curious.

On another note, this is probably my favourite Ryan QL: http://www.giantbomb.com/videos/quick-look-kirbys-epic-yarn/2300-3374/

"It makes me angry how fucking much I enjoy this game!"

Speculation is dumb. His dad already said natural causes. The truth will come out eventually. This isn't some vast conspiracy.

I don't think anyone is saying there is a conspiracy. People are just speculating as to how he died. This happens with literally every famous person that dies it isn't meant to be disrespectful it's just when someone dies very young people want to know how it happened.

He was a big dude and was going hard the days before and after his wedding. I expect his heart gave out from exhaustion. I don't think there is anything more to it.

Regardless. I just watched the Hotline Miami quick-look and man his energy was just awesome and it will be a real drag not having him contribute to our gaming world.

ryan smoked.

He smoked? I know they mentioned him having a cigarette somewhere in the latest podcast but I didn't know he was a regular smoker.

And yes people, stop asking why, and stop guessing/speculating. If his family wants to tell us they will. Just leave it at that.

Woke up today finally not feeling so blue about our guy Ry

I plan on watching his videos whenever I can today. I hope the other duders are doing better. I wish I could make a podcast that could help them as much as their podcast helped me

There's nothing natural about a 34 year old man dying

Agreed, it was a terrible thing to happen and we have lost one of our best. Its starting to really sink in now (after the various tribute videos and bombcast) that we wont ever see him again and its horrible. Im getting better at not getting teary eyed everytime i think about it but its going to be a touchy subject for a while to come.

I remember on the original xbox live shut down stream Ryan stepped out and Dave mentioned something indicating that Ryan went out to smoke. Not sure of when it ever came up again on GB, or if that was even what Dave was implying. But that was what I had thought from that point on and never really thought about it much until it was brought up on the bombcast.

I agree the cause talk needs to stop, I understand though its hard to stop thinking about when its someone that people cared for.
