This movie, is a shameless, absolute delight to anybody who's in on the kaiju and super robot genres Pacific Rim pays a tribute to. Sure there's a decent degree of an American Action Movie blended in rather carelessly but when the movie opens to a TL note saying "kaiju means monster in japanese" you know what kind of person made the movie and for whom. It's a love letter to Japanese children series, complete with shots taken straight out of tokusatsu classic (apparently unintentionally, if wiki is to be believed), and I loved every cheesy second of it.

If I want to put on my hur dur analyse-the-characters critics hat I could walk away angry, but the movie is so matter-of-fact and to-the-point I just don't care. Yes, there's character drama, and it's all two dimensional, but the simplicity helps drive the film. Two dimensional characters piloting three dimensional robots fighting fourth dimensional monsters.

Where turds like Transformers spend 30-40 minutes padding 2D characters into melodramatic shit you get bored because it's not interesting. Pacific Rim is dumb, but the bluntness just means less time spent on awfulness and more time spent on awesome. People say how they feel, on the spot. Scientists explain shit in 30 seconds, and the next scene is that shit getting done. IM SAD. ANGER. WE NEED THIS. GOT IT. ROBOT PUNCH MONSTER WOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAH.

Go in to have pure, distilled fun or stay home and watch something else.

I saw it tonight too and I really liked it. I agree with most of what you say, but I honestly don't understand why
they got two non-Australians to play the two prominent Australian characters who take part in a large part of the drama and combat?

How hard could it have been to get someone like David Wenham for the dad? They went to so much effort to put that fight in featuring the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, clearly trying to appeal to Australian audiences... only to have no Australians in the fucking film!? Perplexing.

But yeah, it was great fun.
 
Just got back from the cinemas. Great film. Not really much more to say then that. Nitpicks aside, I just left the theatre feeling really satisfied.

3D was really good too, for those on the fence.
 
Going to see it tonight at a local Regal theater in 3D, been my most anticipated movie for some time, Guillermo has never let me down.
 
Sounds like I should reduce my hype levels from "kill" to "stun". People seem to be leaving the movie with either rock-hard dicks or generally positive feelings of "that was fun".

Having lowered expectations is probably a good thing, because I'm pretty much thinking this movie is going to be an 11.

I'm also starting to think that people who don't like this movie are people that don't know how to let go and just have fun. Just a little belittling of anyone who's opinion doesn't match my own to keep my self-worth high and my opinions safe from tarnishment!

I bought all three of the PR action figures yesterday, here are some impressions for the curious:

Gipsy Danger: Nothing special, but the legs articulate very well for a variety of poses. Since it's more or less the main character of the movie, I figure most people will want her for completion's sake.

Crimson Typhoon: I was most excited about this one, and I wasn't disappointed. Very cool overall design, especially the limbs. The digitigrade legs are awesome (gives her a very predatory appearance) and the two right arms and left claw look flat-out badass.

Knifehead: Pretty disappointing, honestly. Hardly articulates at all, and the only way to make it stand up is to bend the tail and use it as kind of a tripod. Oh yeah, and the front claws are actually pretty sharp. For plastic, at least.

TRU is recommended, they have them for $14.99 each if anyone's interested. Can't wait for Cherno Alpha and Striker Eureka. I might pass on the next kaiju if Knifehead is any indication of their future quality, though.
 
Wow, this was awesome!

It's gotten to the point where I'm gonna go see it once more in IMAX and then never watch it ever again. Nothing will be able to compare with the fantastic 3D, the scale and size of the content and the sound.

So have you actually seen the movie? Because if you're just basing this on what you've read in reviews than you're being kind of a dick. Perhaps see the movie first and form your own opinion instead of lashing out because one person didn't like the movie.

So should i go in this just expecting all action non stop. Not what i expected from the directors past offerings but still

It is, but I hope you have an idea of what to expect. The fights feel surprisingly short given that there's a lot of connecting tissue in-between, and some folks just plain don't like the non-battle segments. The way they're done, though, most viewers will get something out of the character interactions, enough to then understand the stakes and await some fights. And as far as summer action goes, this has the best battles by far. Man of Steel only has the Faora fight with which to compare, and that one's still pretty basic.
 
I'm really furstrated with them just adding 7pm advanced screenings out of nowhere. I was pumped to grab one of those sick posters you get for the first IMAX showing, and now with maybe 2 or 3 days to go before release, they just threw up an earlier screening, and our theater is just giving them out until they are gone.

However, ignoring that, i am so fucking excited for this movie
 
I just saw it tonight, enjoyed it. The action was amazing, really fell in love with jaegers. The human stories were a bit hopeless but I was expecting that but my friends who I went with thought the acting was horrible. Still felt there were not enough battles though, would have been nice to see some daylight action.

Planning on buying the figurines ASAP
 
I've done my part and have three people going with me to see it tonight at our local Regal. Can't wait! My most anticipated movie of the summer. I was obsessed with Godzilla as a kid, so this is going to scratch a long lasting itch that I wasn't aware I had until I watch PR's trailer!
 
Dammit I still want that poster from the Regal theater. If anyone ends up with an extra somehow do you think you could send it my way? I'll pay for it even!
 
Absolutely loved it.

Terrible acting, dialogue and plot. But who cares, the fight scenes are amazing. Would have liked
more daytime fighting though

The british guy trying to put on an Aussie accent was terribad, the whole cinema laughed at most of his lines (watching it in Australia). The other bloke did an alright job with the accent though.

Went for jaeger kaijin fights. Recieved jaeger kaijin fights. Left satisfied.

Me too. 7:00pm show IMAX 3D. First movie I have been excited about enough this summer to pay the ridiculous ticket price of IMAX 3D for.

edit: if there is any way to obtain additional posters I will try to get some, depends on how strict the theater is I suppose.

I liked MOS better, it's actually kind of weird because i wished Man Of Steel had less action and Pacific Rim more action and you would not have thought it was going to be like that.

I'm not sure where all the time went in Pacific Rim there should have been more battles and less talking!
 
About 12 more hours until I can see the canceling of the apocalypse. This will be a long day! (being hung over does not help)

I went to TRU yesterday and they were sold out of Pacific Rim figures. The space they had on the shelf was for maybe 6 figures, so they are definitely limited.
 
Liking all the impressions so far. Unfortunately I have to wait until Sunday to see it. Hopefully, despite the marketing for the movie being dreadful, word of mouth will get more people out to see it.
 
No spoilers for specific scenes, but was wondering because the pilots are military background, do the mechas fight using martial arts of sorts or just a brawl?

So I looked at the seating availability for Friday night, the opening night for Pacific Rim in the UK.

My cinema is showing in 2D at 20:00 and 3D at 20:50. So far there are 8 seats booked for the 2D (of which 4 are mine) and NONE for the 3D showing.

25.5 hours until kick off.
