Time for a thread name change?

Pacific Rim |OT| COME ON, GIPSY!

Apparently, del Toro said that they already have plans for a sequel, and if they get the green light, (Jaeger spoilers below)

MATADOR FURY will be one of the Jaegers involved since they couldn't figure out a way to incorporate that one into this movie

During a Legendary Pictures press conference ShockTillYouDrop.com was able to attend last month, director Guillermo del Toro - previewing Pacific Rim - teased that there was "Mexican Jaeger" that didn't make a cut of the film.

As you know, the movie features Jaegers (the giant robots or "mechs") from various countries lining the Pacific ocean. When we caught up to Del Toro over the weekend, we had to learn more about this Jaeger.

"We had a Mexican Jaeger with two ex-convicts that got a deal. They told them that, 'If you drive a Jaeger one more time, we'll give you freedom.' But it was just too many backstories," Del Toro said, commenting on the screenplay's jam-packed, world-building mythology. As it stands, the final film features a number of Jaegers and the story gives you insight into every pilot that operates them. "When you finish the first draft of a script and it's a 150 pages, you go, 'Hmm, that's not going to happen.' Our final draft was 135 pages and our first cut of the movie was almost 3 hours."

Should Pacific Rim get a sequel, expect that Mexican Jaeger to make an appearance.

Thinking on it, it's not that spoilery...

Any references to animes are japanese kaijus in this movie so far?

Not watching it yet, but Cherno Alpha is pretty similar to this guy;

Question is, why the hell would they not want it to do well just because it's not based on an existing property?

That is downright retarded.

I heard it had more to do with Warner and Legendary splitting, and that it would help (new) negotiations if the movie did badly, because Legendary had been and wanted to keep investing heavily and taking more of a risk with their co-produced movies. (That allowed them to get better margins on the ones that did good).

Whatever the case, I'm pumped for tomorrow. I never put any stock into articles/reviews, but I can understand and sympathize with the people wanting this movie to do great. As a Del Toro fan myself nothing would give me more joy. I still think this will do great internationally to the point in which the US market won't tell the whole story.

I want to design a Canadian Mark V Jaeger and name it WENDIGO ECHO.

Cause all the Jaegers have such cool names. Dunno how reliable the PacRim Wikia is, but I like these names.

Mark I

Brawler Yukon
Cherno Alpha
Coyote Tango
Horizon Brave
Romeo Blue
Tacit Ronin

Mark II

Diablo Intercept
Solar Prophet
Puma Real
Eden Assassin

Mark III

Gipsy Danger
Matador Fury
Shaolin Rogue
Vulcan Specter
Chrome Brutus

Mark IV

Crimson Typhoon

Mark V

Striker Eureka

Unknown

Nova Hyperion
Echo Saber
Mammoth Apostle
Hydra Corinthian

Good God this movie was great, it really feels like they let Del Toro did the movie he wanted to do,
there is so much content and some pretty cute things like like how the Kaijus arrive, at first it looks
like the tipical sentai giant enemy spawn but then it feels pretty different, and cool looking.

and yes, the 3D is pretty good.

Moviebob: The New Originals

Gives a good case of why we should be championing this movie. His last paragraph might seem like preaching to the choir but worth reiterating:

Let's do our part to support stuff like Pacific Rim, Elysium, The Conjuring, Only God Forgives, and The World's End. Yes, even if we're not sure about them. Yes, even if some of them disappoint us. Because if we don't, then more reboots, more remakes, and more regurgitations and recycling, is all we're going to get. Let's all try as much as we can to make the movies a place where creativity, fresh ideas, and originality can thrive. Not just a place where franchises and brand names can reach their most profitable form.

I feel like an idiot camping out for the 10:10 showing right now...because apparently they snuck a 7PM showing in front of my showing unbeknownst to me.

So here I am sitting with my pregnant wife on my laptop piping internet from my phone charging from a portable battery looking like a total nerdo being insanely early for a movie that some folks think is silly.

Fuck my life! FUCK IT!

BUT I GET WHATEVER THE FUCK SEATS I WANT SO JOKES ON THEM!

I really should stop checking this thread since I won't be able to see the movie until next week, and I'm already excited.

And yet...I cannot. This week is going to be torture. -_-

You go homeboy. This can be a tale to tell your kid when they come of age.

Fuck yeah, just convinced all of my non-nerdy friends to go see this with me on Saturday. I think my description of monsters and robots fighting and shit worked, plus we're going to
see it at the Alamo Drafthouse so we can get drunk too. My second viewing will be at a larger theater. Doing my part to make this movie a success.

My friend told me he isn't watching it because the way the robots are controlled is dumb and unconvincing so he won't be able to enjoy the movie .

Thanks god I went by myself!!

Considering the concept of the movie, they should have gotten notable famous actors from important country box office areas. Andy Lau should have piloted the Chinese mech. 50+ mil in China guaranteed.

Why are you camping so early for a 10pm show?

Just stopped by a Regal Cinema since they had an early showing. No Shinkawa poster tonight :(
I'll try tomorrow for the matinee

Came out in Australia last night and I saw one of the first sessions. Wasn't a full IMAX session strangely like most new movie releases but was close to.

Great action though less than inspiring dialogue and I felt a lack of characterisation throughout the whole movie, especially with Mako who I just did not care for one bit.

Still a visual feast for the eyes. Big robots fighting aliens - so good.
