New Killzone: Shadow Fall gameplay

I made this post previously. Here it is again:

Guys. Lets be honest.

I am a hardcore Killzone fan, and will buy this day 1 regardless of what the MP is like.

Now. Lets ask ourselves. Why is Halo and Gears of War so popular? Why does the MP portion have a whole dedicated MLG circuit, where the game is taken very seriously, and there is huge cash payouts?

It's because it has very intimate, team based gameplay. Any more than 4 players on a side would be too chaotic.

Also, another thing. I really am not a fan of the class system in both Killzone 2 and 3. I feel it is a not so great ripoff of Team Forretress 2.

I would rather have it more like halo and gears; give me honest feedback and your opinions;

If you are ISA, you spawn with m82 rifle. If you are Helghast, you spawn with Sta 52 rifle. Power weapons such as sniper, shotgun, rocket launcher, flamethrower, eletric gun and the gun that pins enemies to walls are all spread fairly in parts of the map and create power struggles just like how people fight over the sniper in Halo and how people fight over boomshot in Gears, etc.

Make the basic DEDICATED MATCHMAKING game modes like TDM, a no respawn search and destroy mode, capture the speaker (CTF)hold down the speakers (domination) and maybe a team leader/VIP and voila.

Forget that rediculous 32 player Warzone. It is a cluster mess, and the worst part? When a side reaches 4 game type wins, the game keeps on going. Why is this? The game should end because it is best of 7.

You have an MLG game, that will sell because it really is the only shining gem out the gate for Ps4s launch.

Oh yea. The best part?

It has LEGS. It won't be like Killzone 3, or majority of other shooters that aren't Call of Duty, where majority of people play till they max out their rank, and then drop it.

This type of multiplayer could be played for years. This COULD go MLG.

Ugh. Go away.Your ideas suck.

I often wonder how he fuck these videos get so compressed. Sure 1080p is just an aspect ratio, but it's expected to come with a certain fidelity.
We might as well just stretch out a 480p video to full screen.

Surely even youtube has better quality compressed 1080p vids??

But good that this same level has been shown at way better fidelity. We also know it's an early build.

While it's true this video looks especially bad (might have been badly compressed directly at Sony's PR, it wouldn't be the first time a PR office fucked up a video...), there will be more and more an issue with game videos on youtube as we go to more and more detailed models, textures and particle effects. The more details you have, the more difficult it becomes to compress, with the end result becoming a macroblock fest like that video. And with next-gen titles, we either get more details (lost in compression), or 60 fps (lost to youtube's forced 30 fps), or even both I guess :)

Yeah i think this might have been a bad upload in the first place. Compression of an allready compressed vid. It should be able to look better than this.

Some 1080p YouTube videos are crystal clear. Most of the other PlayStation videos on YouTube are also pretty clear, but this is an odd one.

Wait, people are disappointed by that KZSF graphics?

willy-wonka-really-gif.gif

People are stupid, wait to they see other areas!

This is pretty nitpicky but it's a pet peeve I have in FPS. The hip fire position of the gun looks like it's pointing too far to the left. Even more annoying, the February demo didn't have it like that. I liked the Feb position better. In the Killzone games I could always tell where the bullets were going to hit even from hipfiring because of the onscreen gun position and now it looks like they've messed that up. The angle of the Feb demo held at the lower position of the E3 demo would be perfect.
Yes the gun position does look rather weird now that you have mentioned it. I also want to see the return of the excessive depth of field effects that Killzone is known for. I like the blurring of the gun. As things stand, the game just looks too clinical.

They've gone away from a number of different visual tricks and animations on the weapons + enemy feedback that made Killzone 2 look so good. It's disappointing. At first glance the E3 footage looks like Crysis rather than Killzone.

Enemy feedback has been nerfed since Killzone 2.

For the lack of a better term, the 'visceral' nature of the game appears to be lost.

The footage gave me a Far Cry 3 vibe.

Open areas. Scanning enemies. Instakill melee attacks. Hacking/destroying security checkpoints.

As much as i'd love a true sequel to KZ2, all the promo stuff I've seen from KZ shadowfall just tells me is that its NOT KZ4... It's a very different kind of KZ spinoff game.

When I consider it in that light I can be much more open-minded about what they're going to release. I think its a truth all here need to come to terms with.

I like the way the gameplay has opened up from the coridoors, but it feels like, when you get into a fight, its against 3 guys max. Given the tools at your disposal, it seems they could multiply that by 2 or 3 times for there to be an actual challenge.

The most annoying thing about this for me was the stupid amount of glare coming out of the Helghast's eyes, especially the shotgun guys who seem to literally have flashlights for eyes.

Battlefield 3 taught us that being blinded all the time sounds like it adds depth to engagements but in reality its just really fucking annoying.

One thing that's new in this video is you can hear the Helghast call outs and thankfully they still have their British accents, so they're still the good guys :D

I actually think the animations are too slow and seem too canned.

It needs to be quicker and much more brutal, with some shaky cam to make it seem more visceral -- see: The Last of Us as a good example of how to do those brutal kills.

It's as if the enemies aren't putting up any resistance whatsoever...in the Last of Us it looks like a struggle.

Ah, I think you're right - no resistance/resistance from the enemy. Last of Us is definitely an excellent example to borrow from. DOn't make the stealth kill over in 0.5 seconds - where's the thrill/suspense in that?

Personally I wish they would replace all of that pointing with a highlight of some sort. It looks annoying. The animations are too by the book and the enemies just go down weird when they die. The enemies really don't look all that compelling to fight. There is nothing visually about them that makes me want to kick their ass and they certainly don't do anything unique or cool. The Helghast are just very uninteresting humans you fight in space.

And the enemy count needs to be higher. If these enemies are going to be this dumb and easily dispatched then there needs to be more of them. I know stealth is an option in this game so some areas don't need swarms but there has to be more areas with lots more enemies to fight then this.

The gun DoF was in the Feb demo. I hope it comes back. I also want some serious motion blur. It doesn't even seem to be on in this demo.

Even at its worst it looks better than KZ2/3:

So I have no doubt GG will come through in the end, albeit their strength lies in creating urban (including dilapidated) cityscape.

I am honestly probably the most Sony fan out there. and I believe GOW is the best looking console game period on last gen. but I really do not see this game impressive. I am not sure what I am expecting. but I do not see this game impressive at all. maybe I want to see more realistic lighting ? sure it does look better than Call od Duty Ghost.

but I honestly think BF4 look better than this.

Well, that's how games look without superduper-sampling. AF could be better and maybe the LoD could be a little bit improved, both are things that can be optimized in the next months, but other than that it looks nice for a launch game
To be fair, I think there's literally no AF in the game. Maybe sony's api implementation doesn't allow it yet or something dumb like that, I don't know. I think the game looks pretty damn great other than that, especially in a single high quality video I've seen of it (announcement gameplay video)

You should skim through that PDF that was posted earlier to the see the kind of lighting they're working on. I have a feeling the lighting in this game is going to set the bar again, much like kz2 did at its release. Does anyone remember the lights from the helmets illuminating walls in kz2? Man that game was gif worthy.

Well, KZFS isn't ready yet, but I just want to say that I like the rough
rendering look of the KZ2/3 engine much more. For me that is Killzone. The
rendering engine for Shadow Fall looks very PC-ish, way too clean, way too
colorful, which somehow deteriorate the Killzone atmosphere for me.

You're not going to see full detail models unless they're really upclose. They did say that for all the character models they have seven levels of manually prepared LOD, I think. From that distance, that guy looks good. Its' not like anyone's going to stop and inspect detail on him in the middle of gameplay.

So basically how the human eye works in real life? That's the whole point, so the textures and models look better in every situation and save performance when you don't notice.

Exactly that, yes. The only problem is, when there's not enough rendering power, LOD levels are switched too late, so the 'pop-in' (or rather fade-in like KZ is doing) of higher detail geometry or texture happens too late, and you see it happen right in front of you.

This is where tessellation I thought would be the answer. 1 model, X number of LoDs acting like the scaffolding upon which tessellation would keep on constructing up to the most detailed LoD.

KZ2/KZ3 looks more impressive than KZSF.

The Feb reveal was superb though.

Graphics concerns shouldn't be the issue. This game will look stunning and could make me buy a PS4 earlier than I intended if that input laggy feeling I associate with Killzone is gone, and the story and characters are halfway decent.
