Steam Sale - (Overlooked) Indie Game Deals Discussion Thread

Toma, as always, you've earned your place in heaven. Awesome thread and pure gold all around.

I didn't know Cart Life had released on Steam, let alone that it was on sale. Loved the demo, it was worth the 2$ alone and more, so I'm getting it right away.

Lots of awesome stuff, really. I'm almost sad that I already have most of the great stuff. :D

Buy FTL and Super House of Dead Ninjas. Don't ask. Don't Argue. Don't debate. JUST DO IT.

Thank me later.

This man speaks the truth. LISTEN TO HIM.

Mmmm... no. There are similar elements but their application results in a very different feeling game. Spelunky is like a traditional platformer stuffed into a Rogue structure, while Cargo is a Rogue with platforming. The end result is that Cargo Commander is easily suited to short gaming sessions since the permadeath works in conjunction with the item collection/leveling, whereas Spelunky works better in longer sessions since there's a very specific goal+boss (yeah, there's all the crazy bonus stuff in Spelunky but that's more post-game).
Well I was just going by the review. I've...never played Spelunky, but I know it's well known and it's a description that would intrigue

So I'm playing Noitu Love 2. Can somebody tell me why this game didn't/doesn't get as much love as say games like Hotline Miami or Fez?

It really is a fucking fantastic game.

I posted this in the main Steam sale thread, but I think it's moving too quickly. Anyone want to split a Don't Starve 2-pack?

The game proper was released a few years ago. And then a Steam version got squeezed out. Also, the name is kind of weird.

But yeah, the lack of fanfare for the game is bullshit.

Space Pirates and Zomibes(SPAZ) - $1.99 (80% off)

The concept behind this game is good and it is fun, but personally the keyboard controls and horrendous dialogue is what really kept me from enjoying this title. It's too bad because I really wanted to like it. At that price though, it's definitely worth getting.

Kairo - $3.99 (50% off)

Edit: It's €1,99 ($2,60) in Europe.

Looks interesting!

Cart Life - $1.99 (60% off)

GiantBomb has a Quick Look of this game here.

Wanderlust: Rebirth - $2.49 (75% off)

There's a Quick Look for this game too, here.

Perhaps not overlooked, and it was in a Humble Bundle, but still.

Jamestown - $3.39 (66% off)

Yeah, fun game, great soundtrack. Not as polished as say, something from Cave, but I've put a lot of hours into this game. Definitely recommended!

Add The Void to the OP. One of the most unique and atmospheric games ever made. Ice-Pick Lodge are criminally underrated, the game was more than worth it at full price. For $2.50 it's an absolute steal.

Awesome.

Woke up, checked the sale, and came in to tell everyone about Grimlock, but found it all on page 3 and 4.

Nice job, night watch!

Sequence - $1.99 (60% off)

Sequence is a rhythm game RPG thing where you do battle by juggling three screens of DDR-style moving arrows-- one to block incoming damage, one to recover MP, and one to cast spells-- all set to an awesome soundtrack. There's also a fully-voiced story, crafting, etc etc. (Sequence was basically made by one man: NeoGAF's own Feep.)

I uh... giving us links to the soundtrack rather than the game is an interesting choice. Still nice of you though.

Shatter has an awesome soundtrack. I used to listen to it at work and it's got me past a few rough deadlines.

The game is a lot of fun too, probably in my top 5 list for PSN titles. It's even more fun if you have a bunch of friends on your leaderboards as you will go insane trying to squeeze out more points.

There are a couple of odd indie hold outs that don't appear to be on sale at all. I kind of wanted to pick up Dustforce and the first Zeno Clash, but neither are on sale, which is weird considering their histories. Hopefully they'll be added latter on.

FTL: Worth noting that once again, FTL's developers have price-matched it on their own web site (via the Humble Store). For the exact same price as Steam, you get both a Steam key and a DRM-free copy of the game, plus you're sending a few more pennies the developer's way. There's no reason not to buy it direct!
Unless you really really wanted that $2.49 added to your $10 trading card total.

Doooo it!

If you haven't played FTL... well, I don't know what to tell you.

Buy it from the developer's site and hope <diety> forgives you for your indolence.

Under the Ocean looks pretty awesome, but I'm not willing to play it on early alpha stages, in the other hand my backlog is huge so maybe I could get it for the discount and play it when it's on beta or even released, did they say anything about how long til beta?

I actually enjoyed the controls and the cheesy/shitty dialog.

My problem with the game is that it requires a LOT of grinding to make progress in the game and there weren't enough unique missions to keep me interested.
A real shame since there are a BILLION cool upgrades to choose from in that game, it just took too long.

On the the game's discussion area a developer said they expect to be working on it for the next 8-10 months before it's "complete" but they'd like to continue adding content to it after that.

I'm waiting for a Humble Indie Bundle for FTL. It's got Win/Mac/Linux ports already, and they use the Humble Store. It is a matter of time, and I've got some of that.

Super Hexagon - $1.01 (66% off)
MXGMCnX.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/221640/

Difficulty done right: each game lasts under a minute. It's really cool to see yourself constantly get better at such a hard game. Extremely clean retro graphics, fast techno music, and a very cheap price point all make this game a winner.

Waves - $2.49 (75% off)
ns4HBrm.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/107600/

Flashy colors and a three-minute-long score attack mode make this a great arcade game. It has a survival mode as well. Like most twin-stick shooters, it's difficult. Still fun, though.

Feel free to omit this one until it goes on sale. I don't think it *will* be on sale, sadly. :(
Windosill - $2.99 (0% off)
2dcfUja.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/37600/

Windosill is a digital pop-up book. Allegedly great for children, but as a fan of both whimsy and point-and-click adventure games, I liked it. It is extremely short (about an hour long) and probably not for everyone. The good thing is that the first half of the game is available as a free demo on the official site. The bad thing is that it hasn't been on sale since the 2012 Summer Sale.

Does anyone know what that game is it kind of looks like puzzle quest, some gem matching looking game. Not the one that's in this thread there's another one like it. Not bejewelled.

Edit
I think I was thinking of magical drop, if I was I don't know why.

Am I the only one who thought that this game was boring as shit? And I tend to love stealth games.

Yes.

Just kidding, man, really? If you don't mind me asking, what kind of stealth games do you like? I've been a fan since PS1 Tenchu, but don't mind expanding my borders.

You're probably the first person I've encountered that doesn't like this game. :/

Yeah really IMO it's the only true "ninja" game and one of my favorite stealth games ever

I like Metal Gear series a lot. From the Metal Gear 2 to Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence.

IDK I just found MoN to be very boring. It was repetitive in not a good way.

Willing to learn
I'm about to randomly buy Dark Void Zero (2.49) so my wishlist is a nice round 40 (ugh). It's the 2D, DSiWare/PC version of a shitty 3D game. I hear it's awesome, but since this is a blind purchase (never bought it for my 3DS), I cannot recommend it in the form the OP requests.

Edit: Oop, nevermind. It has a 5 activation limit. I'll probably just get it for my 3DS in the future, then.

Yeah, avoid Dark Void Zero. It's got that 5 activation limit, and the activations cannot be recovered once they're used.

Also considering picking up [Time Gentleman, Please! and Ben There, Dan That]
I would recommend them, at least for $0.50. They're simply adventure games with kind of a stupid/silly sense of humor, but they're definitely entertaining enough to be worth that and worth playing if you're interested. None of the puzzles were stupidly difficult like some other adventure games, either, if I recall correctly.

You call those stealth games?! Weak.
I love MGS

What about Thief? Hitman Blood Money? Splinter Cell?

While I don't think MotN quite matches up to those titles, I thought it was pretty solid.

Fair enough. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the Metal Gear series, though I haven't played anything since the PS2.

I guess it comes down to setting? I'm a big ninja fan, so for me I never really looked at the game apart from its setting. If you're not into that, then it may not be for you (which is why I refrained from saying, "If you like games, get this!").

Maybe I should go back and say, "If you like ninja games, or if the thought of a new Tenchu game makes you happy - then get this game!"

I tried SC, but am just not into the setting that much. Thief on the other hand - niiiiice.

Indie games are about all my computer can handle these days. I'm gonna pick up a $20 steam card later today...still trying to figure out what to spend it on though.

Currently targeting:
- Hotline Miami ($2.50)
- They Bleed Pixels ($2.50)
- La Mulana ($7.50)
- Super House of Dead Ninjas ($2.37)

I like action and platformers...stuff along the lines of Mega Man and Metal Slug. Any suggestions? Or comments about the above games?

Super House of Dead Ninja is absolutely amazing and unadulterated crack. You don't need to take my word for it, though, because there's a free version here:
http://games.adultswim.com/super-house-of-dead-ninjas-action-online-game.html
You'll have to use XPadder for the free version as it's Flash, but otherwise it has a lot (like, over 60%) of the content of the full version. Fall in love with it, then buy it.
La-Mulana is pretty good too, but I don't know if I'd get it for 7.50. I guess I'm biased because I got it for dirt cheap in a Groupees Make-a-Bundle.
They Bleed Pixels is quite nice too from what I've played.
I didn't like Hotline Miami at all, but apparently I'm in the minority. *shrug*

I actually waited until FTL was 5$ before purchasing it. After doing so, I felt so bad I paid so little for the game, I bought it again (on Steam, the first time was on GOG, which I discovered I don't like), then gifted it to no less than six different people. I'm not rich, those are meaningful purchases for me, and I've never done anything like that in over 30 years of gaming.

It's that good.

It's my favorite indie game of all time, in fact.

Super Hexagon - $1.01 (66% off)

Oh, nice, I think I'll pick this.

That's a really good question. As someone who loved Noitu Love 2 (although I have to play more of it), but didn't get the appeal of Hotline Miami, and thought Fez is quite overrated from the demo at least, I have to agree with you. I guess smaller marketing budget? Not being written by a self-important asshole? Your guess is as good as mine.

Yeah Noitu Love 2 is a truly fantastic game, Konjack the creator does commission work with Wayforward as a sprite artist, which shows especially the level 1 boss.
It's one of those games that's screaming out to be on a Nintendo system.

Anyway since folk are mentioning their recommendations here are mine:-

eXceed Complete Pack 50%off

header.jpg

Kinda like Touhou on crack, Ex3rd is very fast and aggressive due to proximity powered shots and emphasis on speed kills for score. Exceed 2nd plays like Ikaruga.
also
Ether Vapor Remaster is 50% off too, it's a 3D shmup with changing camera angles, the progenitor to Astlebreed that some ppl are excited for.
Carpe Fulgur Pack - All 3 games are good fun.
DustForce and Aquaria aren't on sale but if they do come up grab em

What I might buy.

Super House of the Dead Ninjas
Monaco
Nights into Dreams
Ys book 1 & 2

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Tropico 4, Town, or Reus for Community Choice?

Actually what kinds of games are they?
Tropico is a city building management sim, Towns is half Sandbox, half village sim and Reus is a god game with puzzle elements. Although all are great, I'd love to see Reus winning this.

I'll toss up a couple of recommendations quick:

Noitu Love 2: Devolution - $1.50 (70% off)

I just heard about this game from this thread! Looks AWESOME! Went to go download it, immediately!

Great thread! I just bought a bunch of cool looking 2D indie titles I've never heard about. All the weird, quirky, indie platform/puzzle games were what I was most interested in with this sale. I'm quite new to Steam so this thread has opened my eyes to a lot of cool looking PC niche games! Thanks again!

I'd like to recommend Receiver which is on sale for $2.99

Great gunplay and how you treat the guns is realistic. It was part of a seven day FPS game jam challenge last year and the developers added some content to it and, through Greenlight, got it on Steam.

Speaking of that game jam, does anyone know where to find the other games that were made during it? The official site has been replaced with this year's upcoming event so I don't think they are hosting them on there anymore.
