reason for their exclusion was too many back stories....

this HAS to have a Prequel series!!!

You also knew the plot to Avatar before you walked in theater. "Plot" seems like such a weird criticism for the type of movie. Were people expecting Lawrence of Arabia?
This is one of the most tiresome defenses of the movie. If you want it to apply to Pacific Rim, then del Toro should have spent less than a fucking hour between the first fight and the second one on terrible characters doing pointless shit.

The plot is pure filler and yet nobody seemed to realize it, considering how much time is wasted on it.

Now that i think about it, the lack of any sea based jaeger is kinda odd. You'd think you wanna take them out before they reach land, and for some reason i don't feel like the humanoid form is ideal for water combat.

aka i want a giant submarine with arms and legs lol.

The kaiju were extremely mobile in the water, so fast that they couldnt even keep up with them with trackers. If they didnt have trackers that could keep up with them then i doubt they could build robots with enough mobility to keep up with them.

That is my chief complaint as well. Too much time between the first 2 fights. Should have shown a fight with the Russian or Chinese jaeger to break up all that dialog.

These four sound like complete badasses.

Son....Vulcan Specter.......Vulcan. Fucking. Specter.

If this doesn't get a high budget prequel series that fleshes out each one I'm never going to forgive Del Toro

it's like Cloud Atlas with the diary, only we got the ending half of the book.

Kaiju have the advantage in deep water, which is the reason an oceanic Jaeger was never made.

Plus if you did fight them near the rift, they could simply retreat back into it at the slightest risk of losing.

Also, I think ejection units wasn't viable, as Kaiju started directly targeting the head/pilot area. Also, the Russian team was bad ass, would like to see more of them.

It would have been awesome to get some kind of "greatest hits" flashback to some of their kills (and Typhoon's) while Stacker was telling Raleigh about each team.

I definitely dont want to see that movie. I want to see a bunch of mechs fighting monsters and in the beginning of the war they were using planes and tanks to fight. Ive seen more than enough movies with planes and tanks fighting. Plus those 1st gen jaegers technically shouldnt have weapons as cool as the ones we saw in this movie. If there is a next movie it should involve jaegers as advanced as Striker Eureka and beyond.

That's okay, judging from the box office numbers no one wanted to see this movie anyway. :P

These Jaegers were all first generation mechs which got 5-second screen times in the movie. I want to see more of them:

Well, they don't know exactly when Kaiju are going to appear, and when they do, they swim away really fast usually - so the sensors they leave near the rift tell them a kaiju has appeared, and a guess as to which direction it's heading.

The way we make clones is we take genetic information from an animal, and put it in an egg inside a surrogate mother for incubation. I assume this is the same method the aliens use.

I kinda agree with eject, motherfuckers need better eject mechanisms.

Yeah but they have a clock that shows the next attack of the kaijus, even if the clock is not exact why not wait the kaijus near the portal, like when level 5 kaiju appeared.

Yes but why to make a clone inside a clone? And send them both doesn't make any sense.

With ejects, same with the russians, the chinese were ripped off directly, but russians could escape easily.

Also why the kaijus want to kill the doctor?, apparently anyone can connect mentally to the kaijus and spread the info so what is the importance?, and if Kaijus know the Doctor info, why not attack the Tokyo base directly?

Even if Kaijus have advantage deep water they could beat 3 of them and one of them was level 5, so...

As someone who got the inferior-dubbed version here, she said something like "I will never forget you sensei!" in English. I dunno, I only remember the sensei part but it wasn't very important.

Wow, really? that's pretty lame.

In the UK version she speaks Japanese quite a lot, for example she said..

まだ方法があります! (there is another option) before she pulled out the sword, then said 私の家族のために! (for my family) when she sliced that thing up. I thought it was very cool they allowed her to say some of her big lines in native tongue - you got kinda shafted.

Oh, that would have been lovely!

Gotta say I love how utterly fun the main theme was.

I would have also loved to have more female pilots. When will we be over only token female characters in these kind of films? :(

Those had incredibly large weights at/over 7500 tons. Considering Cherno was also a Mk1 and was only 2412 tons.

The Russian Jaeger doesn't have an escape pod mechanism.

This scene was kind of heartbreaking to watch, the actress who played young Mako really did an amazing job. Hearing her cry just got to me a little for some reason. When Mako was having that flashback it really felt like the movie was coming together with that character insight.

That part scared the shit out of my son. He looked up at me and said "Dad can I sit in your lap?"

This fucking movie is incredible. I went only only seeing the first trailer which I didn't think looked good and had my mind blown. Best movie of the summer hands down.

The art direction/cgi and sound design is ace. Every frame just looked so fun and full of life. So much love was poured into this movie that its infectious. The movie has the perfect tone. Everything today is so dark and cynical seeing a movie that just wants to be awesome was a breath of fresh.

Great universe that's perfect for prequels, sequels, spinoffs, side stories in any medium without filling forced like most movies these days. Just great stuff.

Also funny story, theater was half full and there was a really high couple behind me. right after the gravity trailer, the high man said in a very serious matter of fact tone "that's why I dont go to space." Which I couldn't stop laughing about till like 5 minutes into Pacific Rim.

Why not? Easy to make a giant robot and difficult to make an escape pod?

Notice how with all the other jaegers the pilots are in the head......on top of the machine. Well that thing on top of the Russian jaeger isn't the head its some sort of power generator. The pilots are actually inside what would be the chest of other jaegers. Only way they could eject would be through the front.....which would be where the kaiju is most likely standing.

Yeah, that was, without a doubt, the most intense scene in the film for me.

That scene and the kaiju that made it into Hong Kong scared my son, too. But then Gipsy Danger showed up. & saved the day.

3/5 movie for me. Needed more battles. Whenever the Jeagers were on screen it's a 5/5 movie.

They can eject on the sides, but it would be a good explanation, shame didn't mention it.

The only thing about this movie that disappointed me (and I mean that, the ONLY thing) was "the Masters." I mean, not only were their motivations basically the same as the ID4 aliens, not only did they look almost exactly like the ID4 aliens, but they get taken out by a countdown nuke in their base of operations like the ID4 aliens. The mind meld explaining their motivations even echoes ID4. I don't know Guillermo's stance on ID4, maybe he loved it and that was an intentional thing, but it was the only part of the movie that made me cringe a bit and go "eeeehh."

I thought the baby kaiju was going to be like baby metroid for a second.
Hahahaha, glad that I'm not the only one who thought that. Like Newton's drift with a kaiju brain altered his own brain and enabled the baby to imprint on him or something. I totally thought that was coming.

I want to see more Tacit Ronin. That one looks way too sleek and badass to be relegated to a forgotten mark 1.

Only the russian Jaegars don't have escape pods. It was explained in the artbook that the Russian Jaegars were created under the philosophy of Russia winning and never losing. If you had to lose and escape, you would have failed your country and killed people. This kept the russians on their toes and be more willing to fight to the death to win.

Saw and it last night and thought it was great. It was a lot of fun. My only issue with it is that I wanted more battles and I didn't want the other robots to die off so fast.

Russians are hardcore dang.

The art book is better than the movie then.

It's a pretty typical invasion story in older Kaiju movies. I think even the The Simians dudes from 70's Godzilla had the same plan.

RIP Cherno Alpha

as the oldest jaeger and among the strongest (prior to Mark 5 jaegers), i think it was fitting that it required two class-4 kaijus to take down Cherno Alpha.

any prequel to Pacific Rim should feature Cherno being an absolute beast against kaijus.

now why couldn't they tell us that in the movie, honestly i could have used more russian dialogue.

Yeah, it was my only real disappointment with the movie. It's a couple steps beyond just being similar.

you know, i think i would be down if they had 1 more fight between the first and second one. Let china and russia shine for a battle before getting destroyed.

Yep, it was classic Godzilla. Aliens using giant monsters as weapons of mass destruction. If we ever got a sequel, we'd have Mecha-Kaiju ala Mechagodzilla guaranteed lol. I have to admit that Category 5 kinda dissapointed me:

Pacific_rim_slattern.jpg

I guess this was meant to be Pacific Rim's King Ghidorah, Slattern just underwhlemed me. I guess he did tank a nuke? *shrugs* lol

Otachi though was fucking shit up.

I wouldn't have minded their diabolical plot reveal so much if they didn't look so much like the ID4 invaders. Del Toro's movies are filled with wonderfully imaginative monsters, and this one is no exception with the kaiju; but when it came to "the Masters" their physical similarity to ID4 aliens was a letdown. Plus, the whole nuke scene.
