Watched at a regal cinema with RPX. The 3D was well done, especially in the water scenes. It helps to show the sense of scale with these robots and kaiju. The RPX sound system was amazing, I imagine it is similar to an IMAX screen too. Wonder what it would be like to watch it with Dbox on top of all that, probably it would hit some kind of brown note.

that was a new attachment so the dude didn't know about it. Also I believe the hitting it had to do with the Kaiju Blue thing that happened when they were in the water. They mention it at the beginning.

How is it inaccurate or hateful to state that the ending was a saccharine, toothless copout by way of introducing
escape pods that are apparently capable of traveling through a collapsing wormhole with a nuke going off inside it all the way from another universe in order to save our protagonist's life so he can celebrate by kissing the love interest?

Knowing what's going to happen has little to do with repeat enjoyment of movies. There are films I could watch endlessly (and do, and love every time). In Pacific Rim's instance, there's nothing really all that interesting going on during the action scenes outside of a few fun touches -- something I truly realized on second viewing.
We knew this would happen and boy it still stings. Wonder how Godzilla 2014 will do . . .
Missed the first 5-10 minutes, but I read the comic last night, so you're probably right.
The Jaeger's entire existence seems to be based around mitigating damage to the cities and limiting the amount of blood spilled which contaminates everything. This is why conventional weapons were bad and nukes are simply inherently bad lol.
I hate 3d, and never watched an imax 3d. Just find a large 2d theater with good surround sound, and it will be a blast.

It's amazing how much damage the Transformers franchise has done to this movie. I've asked 4 of my friends, separately, why they had no interest in seeing this and 3 of them basically said because Transformers is terrible.
Godzilla is a known property, a lot people remember Godzilla's goofy Showa antics. However, the movie looks like it's going to be a brutal grimdark take on Godzilla, we're going back to Gojira 1954 basically, not sure how some people will feel about that. I know for a lot of people Showa Godzilla is the only Godzilla they really know. I am hopeful, I think it will definitely do better than Pacific Rim, but it could still bomb
Pacific Rim reminds me of Transformers, but if the Transformers films were actually good.
I liked watching it in IMAX 3D, but I got some major headaches during some segments. And besides PR, I have never gotten a headache watching a 3D film.

People are still talking about poorly it's doing at the box office, I really don't think it's US take will matter in the long run. It will probably clean up in asian markets.

Just got back from watching it. The second and third act were pretty good, but the first act felt really iffy with me, partially because the scientist characters seemed to be trying too hard to be quirky (which is a complaint I had with Kraus in Hellboy 2, who seemed often too over-the-top). The rest of the cast was inoffensive, but at the same time, there weren't that many things to right home about, either.
I realize the main focus of the movie was the robot fights, but at the same time it's important to have a character element along side it. If Iron Man had focused solely on the armor in the previews, it wouldn't have done nearly as well as it had.
In light of the box office, I'm holding out hope that word-of-mouth can help it out. How to Train Your Dragon opened at $43 mil, and was able to finish with five times that.

The box office news is shitty but at least the film has a concrete ending instead of presumptuously assuming there were going to be sequels. It'd suck more if we were unfairly left on the hook like that.
That's not really a fair comparison, HTTYD opened at the end of March in 2010, not as a summer tentpole. Less expectation from the studio.

Of course but maybe there is no crowd anymore for this? Okay, I'm just depressed about the PR numbers. Maybe it will have legs. In case it will I will also be more optimistic about Godzilla.
Godzilla is a well known franchise. Big difference. Because pacific rim bombed doesn't mean Godzilla will.

That's dumb and childish. If people who refuse to watch a movie with giant robots because they thought the Transformers movies were bad really mattered, the Transformers films would not have made more and more money, especially internationally. It clearly shows that mainstream audiences don't mind watching giant robot movies. Something about Pacific Rim just doesn't appeal to the masses.
Transformers had a built in fanbase and was a well known property which helped the first film at the box office. It actually made perfect sense to make a big summer blockbuster based on Transformers. PR did not have the luxury of having that fanbase and had to convince the general audience to watch a robot film which is not Transformers.

Doesn't waste time. Doesn't make apologies. It is what it is, and what it is is two hours of honest, unadulterated, robots-punching-monsters-in-the-face JOY. Amazing spectacle, brutal fighting, genuine laughs, and genre cliches and corny dialogue served up with earnest feeling. Biggest "oh sh*t!" moment for me was undoubtedly when, and the shot whenOtachi sprouted wings ("so that's the flying kaiju!")made me almost jump for joy. Heck, that whole Hong Kong sequence was a damn masterpiece.Mako activates Gipsy's sword and slices through the wing and they just hover there in that pose for a few seconds
Favorite movie of the summer, and I'm definitely going to be seeing it again.

Could it be the re-used trailer lines over and over and over? Not enough shots of the humans? They don't like the robots looking like proper robots? Too much reminding of power rangers? Not enough explosions? What? What is it?

So....why wasn't this marketed a bit towards children either? It seemed like the logical thing to do.
Not to mention the transformers film didn't need to make a profit directly, as it was also going to boost the merchandise sales (which is why Cars is the biggest money making Pixar movie despite being weaksauce).
Here in the UK they've really messed up, they spent a fortune on advertising it and yet the soundtrack isn't out for another couple of days after the movie (like most, I wanted to buy it the moment I walked out the cinema - I'll probably forget about it come Tuesday) and no merchandise (again, I was ready to fork over some serious cash to get me some figures but alas they don't have any).
The story isn't bad, it's more bare bones. It does what it needs to and does that fairly well but leaves you wanting more of it. The main complaint seems to be that there just wasn't enough time to fit everything into the two hours. It likely would have been better off as a two-parter, but then it probably wouldn't have been made. It's definitely worth a watch.

I suppose so. I'm just frustrated that a movie comes around that doesn't degrade itself to sex appeal and innuendo masquerading as jokes in order to be an entertaining movie, and what happens to it? It gets rejected by North American audiences.
Story is not great, but its not horrible either. It doesn't take itself that seriously so the plot points aren't strong, and if you analyze it too much it tends to fall apart. But the pacing is decent
This isn't like Prometheus, which had a super serious tone that made the weak story kill the movie. This movie goes full goofball during some moments. I mean Charlie Day as a scientist, you know they don't give a shit

It also did not have any actors to really push viewers. I don't think Elba has the ability to pull crowds, and neither did any other of te main characters. Judge dredd comparison was a good one (although dredd was better)

Wasn't Andy Richter in the movie too? In the beginning, when they were constructing the wall. I could swear he was one of the workers.

After thinking yesterday that perhaps I was being too harsh on this movie, I decided to sleep on it. Now with a clearer head, I was considering maybe a 2nd viewing would make it suck less, but then I remembered that Del Toro directed both Hellboys and Blade 2. Those movies are still great, and enjoyed them immensely on the first viewing. This movie doesn't deserve that I spent another $13 and I would have to say this is a very serious step down for Del Toro after his masterpiece Pan's Labyrinth.

Saw this in 3D IMAX today.
It was exactly what I expected and I really enjoyed it, however some of the fights were hard to keep track of in 3D IMAX.
Not sure if I was sat too close or if it is a problem with the way the fights are shot but lots of the fights seemed to be shot close up and with a bit of shaky cam.
It was not all the time and it was still far easier to follow the fights than it was in the first Transformers.
I wonder why directors don't pull the shots back a little bit, and maybe slow things down now and then....
I plan to see it again in 2D, maybe its just a problem in IMAX.
The fights were still very enjoyable and let me wanting even more.

Even if Rinko is pretty, she's not traditionally sexy. There's no long shots of her cleavage or butt, and she never even kisses the main lead. Del Toro is amazingly withholding of any sex appeal, and I'm impressed.

I'm going to see this with some friends when it's out over here. Only one question: How good is Idris Elba in this? I know he's a great actor but I don't know whether the role really fits him all that well.
