After the Casey Anthony verdict nothing surprises me anymore.
100% The guy would of been put away given the correct charges. If you noticed the defense didn't argue stand your ground they argued self defense.
I don't think you'll find many effective defense trial lawyers who aren't. It requires most of the same character traits as being a good conman.

I was involved peripherally in a bar fight case that went to trial (no racial angle, two rednecks at a honkytonk) where one guy killed another in the parking lot. No witnesses. One guy alive to tell the story was charged with murder. He was acquitted as well.
State went overboard for political reasons and didn't back it up in the courtroom. If this had been run of the mill case, he'd have been charged with manslaughter and pleaded to reckless endangerment.

Let's say Martin murdered Zimmerman after the confrontation, what would have happened to him? I'm not even thinking about race - to me, it seems like Martin has the clear-cut case of self-defense here. Zimmerman does not.

That's what it's coming down to. I've yet to read of a fair legal system in the entire history of the world. America is about as good as it'll get without having a time-machine that lets you see the exact crime in question. My point was, that it's not perfect, but, based on factual evidence. Factual. The prosecution did a poor job of going for a conviction. They should have built a case around Manslaughter and not Murder. As all preliminary evidence pointed to Manslaughter. People whom are upset should be pointing the finger at the prosecution and no one else. GZ did not get away with murder. He didn't commit murder, he committed Manslaughter. The State of Florida would have won that case had they built it properly. But, we have irrational assholes on both sides of the fence, screaming racist shit(both ways) and it gets a bit grating.
Stand your ground has zero basis in this case, it was never brought up. Prosecution sucked ass.

After he was charged, a bunch of conservatives donated to his defense. Some claim that he gets to keep the remainder of the money although I'm unsure if that's true or not.
You also have to consider...he is now a "hero" in some peoples eyes. Unless he's given the Casey Anthony treatment, I expect him to make some money through media appearances. Hell, wouldn't be surprised if the piece of shit was given a book deal.
Lastly, the Martin family may just want to hear that at least on SOME level, SOME pool of jurors felt that Zimmerman was guilty of some wrong. It can be therapeutic. The case obviously means a lot to a lot of people, even if GZ is dirt poor, even if they can't put him in prison, a symbolic victory may mean something to them.
