Verdict reached in George Zimmerman case - Not Guilty

About an hour ago, I started hearing fireworks a few doors down. To be honest, I thought nothing of it; just a couple of kids finishing off their July 4th stash. When I came to GAF and sped thru this thread, (didn't see the news) Ive seen other posters noticing the same thing...

I have a sickening feeling in my stomach now that I know why...the fireworks are still going strong...bastards...

It's called shooting off the remainder of last weeks fireworks. Fireworks have been going off around here all day long...well before the verdict, and just like every other 4th of July. Seriously people, get a grip.

this photo looks creepy

Seems wrong that he confronted an unarmed child, killed him and said he does not regret it, and gets off clean as self defense.

It's not even about vindication, I just think he's a psychopath and could do the same thing again to another victim.

The fact he has no remorse and says it was god's plan is definitely worrisome. Also seems like he's a cop-wannabe that didn't make the cut... sounds like a ticking time bomb.

It's sad that pretty much everyone knows in their hearts that if the races were reversed the verdict would be as well (100% chance). Pathetic and shameful. Whether the case was weak or the Florida law was stupid, it's irrelevant when the previous statement would hold true 99/100 cases.

South Florida resident here. Before the verdict was reached I predicted he would not be found guilty of second degree murder, however I was uncertain about the manslaughter charge. At the end of the day, though, the defense's case for self defense was convincing and is what ultimately led to the verdict. They articulated the following:

1) Trayvon was the one who initiated the fight.
2) As proof they stated Trayvon's corpse had no wounds other than the bullet wound while showing pictures of a wounded/bloody Zimmerman.
3) They claimed the recorded yells for help was in fact from Zimmerman during this beat down, and for good measure he had friends who testified that it was in fact his voice.
4) Because Zimmerman's head hit concrete he felt stunned and feared for his life.
5) Zimmerman's only hope to stop being attacked was to use his gun.
5) Gun forensics show that Trayvon was in fact on top of him when the gun was fired.

The above rhetoric was enough for jury to drop all charges against Zimmerman. They didn't believe beyond reasonable doubt that Zimmerman was guilty of using excessive force in the way that he did.

indeed.

I'm not sure why I'm supposed to be outraged he was let off based on this.

What did the prosecution charge GZ with ?

just 2nd degree murder

no manslaughter charge ?

is manslaughter related or something separate ?

I haven't been following the trial, but if that's the case then I can see why he would be found not guilty. That's a pretty solid self-defense case. Of course, this does set scary precedence going forward.

Hmm, in that case, agreed with both posts.

First of all repeal Stand Your Grand. It's a ridiculous law. Trust me I want this system improved just as much as anybody. I don't know about you but for me as a young black guy in SC this hits way too close to home for me. Trayvon just as easily could have been me.

Yup. It's a dumb fuckin law.

No shit? Damn, I lived in South Carolina for 16 years. I know all about that shit. I had plenty of friends unfairly profiled, though, on the opposite end, I had some that were profiled, and they had done some grimey things. What part of SC?

Lancaster a small town near the SC-NC border. And you can see where I'm coming from. For a lot of people this isn't just an excuse to get outraged and throw a tantrum over some bullshit. For a lot of us it's real life that we could be in this situation.

The one saving grace is that our shit legal system failed spectacularly on the national & global stage. Justice in this country has always been conditional, hopefully more will come to recognize the patriotic platitudes that would have you believe differently for the shams they that are.
