even if it were nothing but a glorification of this lifestyle (it's not, though it does speak to the very real benefits of temporary hedonistic release) that would be a message, and thus it would be art under your definition (inferring that your definition of art is "has a message" from your post, something I also don't exactly agree with but w/e)

It's Harmony Korine trying to maintain that his filmmaking is edgy, yet nuanced. But it's clear the guys is just not very good at creating compelling movies. His commentary in KIDS was more poignant, this is just a bad MTV reality show. And KIDS wasn't really that great. Gummo was so weird, but also interesting in a way vignettes of a dream might be.

Also your comment about people not having valid opinions of it because they didn't see it in theaters is hilarious. I watched it VOD, but now that I know that invalidates my opinions of film I will be sure to take a different path.

That's like saying you watched a movie where the bad guys were winning for the first hour and then turned it off because you didn't like to see a movie about bad guys winning.

What a piece of shit. I attempted to get through this, and couldn't even finish (and I rarely turn off films in the middle). I got about a full hour in before turning it off in disgust. To say this is some deep social commentary is absurd. It's a glorified bout of hedonistic visuals and horrific editing. In addition, I didn't buy any of the performances, and the lingering bikini shots did little to assure me that this director has any real talent outside of shooting something akin to Baywatch.

Finally, and I say this not as a blazing feminist, this movie is downright awful in its portrayal of women outside of dumb, sex crazed, greedy sheep. The little bits thrown in about friendship do little to assuage my feeling that this movie is ultimately a T&A flick aimed at drooling men. It's honestly one of the most revolting films I've seen in quite some time, and I feel bad for all the actresses involved.

I loved this movie. I just bought it on Blu-ray a few hours ago and popped it in to see what all the fuss was about this movie and man was it amazing. It was pretty explicit and showed a lot of breasts but it didn't stop me from finding the laughter in the movie. Franco was hilarious! Good music soundtrack. All around it was a awesome movie.

The Ashley Benson is HOT!
 
Saw it, and I liked it. I knew this movie was polarizing, but I didn't know why until the first 10 minutes. I think I missed some of the message behind the movie, if it was there, but I definitely liked it beyond the eye candy and Franco making a funny.

James Franco almost pulled this movie out of a failing grade... Almost...

Harmony Korine is a hack. This is nothing more than his perverted wet dream. Keep in mind this is a man who married a girl 13 years his minor. Disgusting.
 
Finally saw this movie. Overall it was pretty boring, maybe because I expected more, however,

The opening scene was amazing. The satire in this movie is fucking hilarious.. "This is the most spiritual place I've ever been" LOL its fucking sad but so true...

The Britney spears montage near the end was excellent and James Franco is really great throughout the whole thing. my dad didnt even recognize him =]

wish the final scene had been better, although what happens to james franco made me think a lot about his character

I'm sure 99% of women who will watch this movie will be unable to get over themselves and the nudity to see the underlying message, which is a damn shame..but maytbe also somewhat fitting???

Yeah, that film felt completely pointless to me.
It got tits, that's nice (I'm being serious, I hate the fact that we barely get nudity in film anymore) and James Franco is pretty good in it, but that's about it.

The plot is braindead, the direction and editing is classic style over substance and at this point is also anything but fresh or original, and the soundtrack is mostly god-awful (to the point that I wonder if it's intentional).
I heard it being described as a comedy (though not always) if it is, it didn't get any laughs from me.

p.s.
It got some decent looking shots I guess, but the editing usually gets in the way of it.

I was exactly in the position as you yesterday, and I'm sure no negative review can dissuade you from watching it at this point.
Just do it, it's not a chore to watch or anything, it's just not very good.

I know it's a term that's used quite often, but I'm not sure how to better describe the way the film is directed and edited.
I didn't feel those jump cuts, scene repetition, time skips, speed alternations and the likes served any meaningful purpose and they're definitely not anything we've never seen before (and seen done better).
In fact, I thought at first it was "ironically edited" (fuck, I'm sure an angel got AIDS over me using that phrase), you know, a commentary on spring break MTV PARTY!!!!! culture, but the entire film is done that way (and shit, it gets old).

I was in the exact same position, though i ended up not liking it at all.
 
I was really disappointed in how Franco and Korine attempted to portray Riff Raff. They didn't nail what makes him funny at all! RR says dumb shit with a kind of even dumber but funny flair and way with words, while Franco just said dumb shit in boring ways.

Wow, so that's who Franco's character was based on? Why didn't they just get this guy to play the role? He's bloody amazing...
 
The best parts were the robbery scene and the Britney Spears montage... everything else is forgetable...

They tried to parody that clip with the scene in Franco's bedroom but what Riff Raff says is 100 times funnier than what Franco says. This ain't no middle of the mall shit! Seasoning sauce been staying on deck! Stupid flatscreen, dumb shit, retarded short bus shit! Just finished filming my other shit that I was supposed to have been did...

Even more strange when they got the twins and this guy, both of which are real people who actually act like they do in the movie. Why not just do the same with Riff Raff? Don't give him lines, just tell him the gist of what he needs to say and he'll come up with some hilarious dumb shit on his own.
