I've seen that trailer with 4 different audiences and each time people laugh their asses off at it. Mainly that part with Bullock's character flying off into space.

I watched it few times on the big screen as well and I believe we have a completely different audience. I felt it more on a serious tone with people having their WOW effect, especially on that IMAX screen when I was there watching Man Of Steel.

I enjoyed the heck out of the trailer because of the 3D effect.

I concur.

Nah. It's a January movie. AKA, the dumping ground. By releasing it that month they are making it clear they don't really care how it does. It actually looks a bit higher budget than your typical January movie too so it may end up attracting a greater audience when it otherwise wouldn't.

I didn't realize it was a Jan film. I just saw the trailer in front of Pacific Rim, and it looked expensive.

Speaking of "what were they thinking?" big budget films, does anyone expect Seventh Son to not bomb? I'm pretty sure I have seen the premise to this film in like 3 Nic Cage movies within the past 5 years.

It'll do nothing in the US but the 3D and the fantasy might play well abroad unless The Hobbit pt 2 (also released by WB..., which just about says it all) has sucked all the air out of the room.

Either way this film could be a MASSIVE write down for Legendary. They better hope that Godzilla really catches fire for them at SDCC or it could be a very long year for them.

The thing is I don't blame them for making this film with the cast and director they did. It's based on a popular books series so that makes sense. I do however blame Legendary for spending well over $100m on this. This should have been medium budgeted project at most. What were they thinking?!

This weekend was boring to me, as pretty much everyone knew what was gonna happen. Despicable Me 2 would repeat and Grown-Ups/Pacific Rim would fight it out for second.

I think next weekend could be very interesting. You have an animated movie (Turbo), a horror movie (Conjuring), a sequel I don't think anyone asked for (Red 2), and what could be a huge bomb (RIPD). It will be fun.

"MECHS ACTIONS MONSTERS MORE MECHS MANKIND"

This and only this. Why does every movie have to have some deep meaning.

Whats wrong with just wanting 2 hours of big things fucking hitting each other?

Absolutely nothing

Im just wandering if i missed something, even if I dont want to see a film I still want to understand why people want to see it, especially if its a huge mega budget film.

'Why do people like what I don't like?'

All i said was the marketing was poor and I asked if there was some other reason to watch the film other than the action.

While I am happy that animation continues to be successful, I wish people would go see Pacific Rim. I still hold onto the delusion that Del Toro will get to make Hellboy 3 if movies like Pacific Rim do well. Yes, I still want a third Hellboy movie. I also want Guillermo Del Toro to have money so he can produce (or executive produce) quirky films like Rudo y Cursi, and Rise of the Guardians.

Even though it is January I do have to agree that releasing Seventh Son only a month after Hobbit pt 2, when it is still in theatres, is probably a misstep. They are going to be partially competing with themselves, granted by time Seventh Son is out most people who wanted to see Hobbit probably would have...but still.

This's something that bothers me too, just look at the top 5 box office of this year:
1 Iron Man 3 BV $406,850,000
2 Man of Steel WB $280,995,000
3 Monsters University BV $237,760,000
4 Fast & Furious 6 Uni. $236,520,000
5 Oz The Great and Powerful BV $234,890,453

None of these movies qualify as "artisy movie" and none of them have a "deep meaning", Pacific Rim problems are in my opinion: A) A genre that's pretty much super niche outside of Japan, B) No Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Shia LaBubulubu or any other big actor name and C) People is afraid of new things. I still remember people complaining about Nolan having DiCaprio for Inception, well he did it for a reason,

the trailer looked like some made for tv shit. terrible.

however, RIPD or whatever is gonna be a bomb to watch. And Turbo. Reynolds isn't cut out for leading man roles
or women

Was RIPD suppose to be a new version of MiB? That's the vibe I got from commercials.

Alot of it seems forced for some reason tho

By the start of next weekend Despicable Me 2 will have out grossed Monsters University. Its just crazy

While its second weekend drop wasn't bad by any means, I am surprised it wasnt a little less considering it burnt off two days of demand before its opening weekend

I could honestly see all of those movies bombing pretty hard. Depending on word of mouth Pacific Rim could actually have a small chance for resurgence over at least a few of those. I expect Despicable Me to continue to be strong as well over Turbo.

To be fair, Shia Labeouf wasn't really a big name before Transformers either.

Eh, Seventh Son looks way better than "made for TV shit". It has big names and obviously a big budget. Big Budget Dark Fantasy films just haven't really done well traditionally, which really explains the January release date.

Not sure why people are shocked that PR Did so poorly.

We have been saying for weeks it was gonna die @ the box office.
em.

No one is shocked. But when the movie turned out great, despite the rumors, and got good to decent reviews, we let ourselves get hopeful.

Never be hopeful.

No, I mean the attitude of the movie. Feels like something asylum would pump out just backed with better effects. Big names are just collecting money.

All i said was the marketing was poor and I asked if there was some other reason to watch the film other than the action.

In my opinion, no there isn't. It's a movie about gigantic robots fighting gigantic monsters. A movie which resonates well with the inner child of some grown ups. A movie which I would like to have watched 20 years ago with my parents. This is why I wanted to watch it. I can understand when other people don't want that, but there's no deeper meaning to this movie that the few trailers I watched didn't convey.

It looks like The Sorcerer's Apprentice mixed with Van Helsing (with a less marketable cast).

Next week, Ryan Reynolds is in Turbo, Ryan Reynolds is in RIPD, Mary-Louise Parker is in Red 2 and Mary-Louise Parker is in RIPD.

Pacific Rim numbers make me so fucking angry. Such a fantastic movie and people neglect it and would rather see stupid shit like Grown Ups 2... what a fucking disappointment. I hope the oversees totals for Pacific Rim stay high. A complete love letter to some of the most groundbreaking and visually impactful films ever and people would rather see Adam Sandler. Infuriating.

I don't understand the cinemascore for Grown Ups 2. I mean, you had to know going in what this was after seeing the first, right? Why even show up?

GAF sucks when it comes to judging box office performance. Pacific Rim isn't lighting the world on fire but it almost certainly is tracking to make some money even before merchandising and DVD sales get factored in, it looks to have a lot of overseas potential so finishing around 150 million domestic should be sufficient for it.

Man of Steel International Numbers Updated

Update:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=superman2012.htm

Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $280,995,000 45.4%
+ Foreign: $338,200,000 54.6%
= Worldwide: $619,195,000
Pretty week foreign numbers with an opening in Brazil this weekend. I thought this movie would do 300 in the US and 700 worldwide a week ago but now I doubt it. This was mentioned in the other thread but it really seems that Imax and 3D were big money contributors here.

Oh, yeah, I agree the movie looks like a big budget version of a syfy original but it could do alright at the box office due to timing. I disagree it is less marketable than those films though. Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore are not unmarketable at all. Antje Traue and Kit Harrington have some increasing public recognition also.

Biggest Superman Movie without Inflation
2nd Biggest Superman Movie with Inflation
3rd biggest Origin/Reboot Movie WW

bigger than Iron Man and about to Pass Iron Man 2 for 7th All time WW in Comic Book movies.

Lol that pacific bomb bitter tears and venting out there hate towards grown ups 2 in this thread.

I don't know what del toro & WB was thinking they made a blockbuster movie about "mechs" no amount of marketing money could have got the main stream audience interested enough to spend there time to watch such a movie.

It has very limited appeal and is pretty much a turn off for viewers who don't have very found memories of watching power rangers enough to go watch it.

Man that's depressing news. Some crappy 3D sequel and an Adam Sandler piece of shit beating Pacific Rim. What is wrong with this country?
