I liked that the Jaegers and the pilots died so easily. Made it seem a lot more realistic. So many movies are afraid to kill of the good guys in battle and it makes them seem invincible. This was not even slightly the case here.

I wouldn't have minded it so much if I got to see them in action a little bit more. :-(

The one with 4 arms looked like it could've done some cool shit.

why didn't stacker just solo striker since he randomly brings up that he and gipsy pilot are the only two pilots who have solo'd jaegers before

just seemed written to get people to like the aus pilot

He only solo'd because of unforeseen circumstances like when Raleigh's brother got yanked. In the comic, Stacker solo controls Coyote Tango because his partner passes out.

The sword reminded me of Ivy's Whip Sword from Soul Calibur. It would've been fucking sick to see them utilize it that way.

Haha, a bunch of my coworkers and I were just discussing that just now. xD Really wanted to see more Cherno elbow drops!

Movie was fun.

However, I will never forgive Del Toro for those terrible fucking Australian accents. All those Australian actors overseas and you can't get a couple of them to play the Aussies? Sounded fucking terrible.

It took me half of the movie to figure out they were Australian. Lol

Yea it came to mind instantly, and all of my friends caught on.

However, the fact that GLADOS was in the movie completely flew over their heads. They aren't huge Portal fans like me, so I can't blame them. That, and the fact that the robotish lady voice has been done to death.

I don't get the ending...

Gipsy Danger can survive an underwater nuclear bomb designed to wipe the rift....

but

The blast from Gipsy's nuclear meltdown is enough to wipe the rift mechanism in the air from ground level?

i guess i'd need to know if he knew that the breach mission would be a suicide mission beforehand or not

just seems weird for him to bring up the solo stuff right before he suits up if it leads to nothing

Just because he did it before, doesn't mean he can or should do it again no? The one-pilot Jaeger thingy was an emergency condition.

depends on how combat capable he can be solo. if it was a viable method but a known one way street due to the stress on the pilot, seems selfish for him to not fly solo since he knew he was going to die anyways. aus guy didn't add much in the final scenario anyways.

basically stacker should have summoned a super upgraded coyote tango from the depths of the ocean for one final fight

It was implied it was a suicide mission by the conversation between aus guy and his father. As for him mentioning the solo stuff, I think that was just an explanation of why he thought of Raleigh as special and tough , as he too had an experience of soloing a Jaegar.

Personally I liked the movie a lot but my two points of contention would be:

1) The whole pregnant kaiju thing, like yea Newt needed an intact brain , but it seems convoluted after stating that the kaiju are cloned .

2) They handwave Pentecost being able to fill in for Aus dad by stating that he brings no memories or emotions into the drift, which I guess is supposed to be badass or whatever but has no precedent or set up. Like they could have established a lore where he's had multitudes of co pilots and/or has exhibited this skill before, but there's like, nothing at all. (unless I missed something)

This is what Stacker says in the comic regarding him flying solo (which was when he saved Mako).

"Eight years ago, my co-pilot blacked out during a skirmish. Somehow I got it done -- but it was my last time in a Jaeger."

Combined with the fact that he already knew the toll of piloting a Jaeger from now be too much for him to handle, going solo for the final mission would've been a terrible idea. He only brings it up to Raleigh to instill confidence in him because Raleigh was questioning why they brought him back. I'm also sure it was implied as a suicide mission due to the fact that if they failed this final mission, the world was fucked.

Yeah, it was a bit quick to resolve but overall the drift issues counted for about 10-20% of the films screen time. If this was Evangelion it would easily be 50% with psychological angst and whatnot.

Just want to add I really want a Pacific Rim game...or more accurately a good Jaeger Simulator where I can jump in the cockpit and then rocket punch some monsters..!!

There's one out on XBLA. It's a fighting game that isn't too spectacular. Should've gave the license to me and I would've made it a fuck ton better. xD

They died with honor!
Let's design these cool jaegers. This one has four arms. This one is super armored tank model. This one is super agile. And this one is just meh.
Let's kill all the cool ones and let the meh one live.

I love gypsy danger's design but I am kind of bitter of how all the other jaegers died like bitches. What a waste of design.

Blu-ray Deleted Scenes...show moar Jaeger action please ...!

Btw, could someone post a .gif of Tacit Ronin? It was the bladed white one standing over some rubble in the News Footage/Intro part of the movie I think. Im not sure if omeone in this thread already has...

Some nice sequel ideas by Del Toro (hints at possible Mecha-kaiju) http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1710434/pacific-rim-2-guillermo-del-toro.jhtml

"I'll tell you a couple of things. We will have Gipsy 2.0 for sure," del Toro told MTV News, referring to one of the many giant robots that fight monsters. "We will have Gipsy 2.0 for sure. Second thing is you're gonna see a merging of Kaiju and Jaeger. And that is quite special."

Following the adventures of human soldiers who pilot giant robots called jaegers to fight against undersea monsters called Kaiju, the film climaxes with an enormous showdown underwater as the last remaining robots fight to close a portal between our world and the one from which the monsters emerge. Del Toro said that if nothing else, this epic showdown produced a few promising ideas about how to further explore this larger-than-life world and push its mythology into new territory.

"Just think about it for a second," del Toro explained. "We sent Gipsy to the other side, right? It exploded, but whatever remains stays there." Referring to "drifting," the psychological process through which jaeger pilots team up with each other to maneuver their giant machines, he highlighted another plot point that might come into play in a sequel.

"We've drifted with a Kaiju brain," he observed ."Well, then start riffing on that and you'll get to something."

KOIJU? AH DA FUCKIN' CALLED 'EM SHAZWAZZAS

Oh my God, this had me rolling.
Wasn't Cherno Alpha a cat 1 Jaeger though? It was only meant to handle the hounds.
Mk. 1. Let's not get our terms mixed up.

I think my only problem with the battle underwater was that there was nothing to show scale. They didn't feel like giant robots.

Saw it last night and really loved it - would definitely be up for watching it again.

I'm kinda torn on which part was my favorite... there were quite a few good moments. The writing/drama/action was all very anime, and I loved it for that.

- The part with the sword was awesome. It is a bit silly that they didn't use it at all before, but I just kind of thought of it as a "secret hidden trump card" type deal. And it was fucking awesome, so I'll give them some leeway.

- Again, the sword. When they sliced that kaiju in half underwater I was fuckin' done. Coolest shit ever.

- Mako's flashback was really good. Really sold the emotion and sense of hopelessness that the kaiju all caused, and the patriotic "we started winning" vibe.

- Kind of a weird one considering this is about mechs fighting monsters, but I loved the scene where the main character (I forget his name) beat the shit out of the Aussie guy. I love Kung Fu movies so hand-to-hand combat like that is always fun, and that guy really had it coming.

- Not really a favorite per se, but the scene where the marshall showed up at the wall to get the protag to pilot amused me. My mind just kind of reduced the scene as "pilot the Eva, Shinji", "no", "you either die out here or in there", "good point, I'm in".

So yeah, great stuff. I'll definitely watch it again.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it common place for military hardware to be upgraded overtime to support the ever evolving battlefield

Knowing that, why was Cherno still classed as a Mark 1? wouldn't after 6 years it would have been a heavily modified version of it's original battle specs

I mean Gypsy Danger was clearly not the same Jaeger it was when it was commissioned, it was as much a MK V as Striker thus explaining it's extreme usefulness, think M16 vs M16 A4

I think if they added a scene after the first time Raleigh and Mako fail to link together with the following it would remove a lot of complaints.

-Mako and Raleigh are grounded
-The other jaegers are called out to fight some kaiju
-We don't have to necessarily see this fight in its entirety but catch glimpses of it on monitors, it would let us see more Cherno and Crimson action
-Focus on the bond between Raleigh and Mako so that they are ready for the next big fight

I'm pretty sure they covered that in the movie. Basically a "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" situation.

And that it had more to do about the pilots than the actual hardware, or at least that's the impression that I got. The Russians were an amazing team. Heck, look at the A-10 Thunderbolt, it's still in service despite being ancient? It can still hold it's own and serve a valid purpose.

I think they kept its original Class as part of differentiating the Jaegers and giving them more of a back story / personality /status. Along the lines of the best/last of their Jaeger Generation:

MK1 - Cherno Alpha
MK2 - Budget limit to 4 jaegers in the film?
MK3 - Gipsy Danger
MK4 - Crimson Typhoon
MK5 - Striker Eureka

Pretty sure Alpha was upgraded to meet demand (besides ejection seats), but the specifics not mentioned.

I mean Gypsy Danger was clearly not the same Jaeger it was when it was commissioned, it was as much a MK V as Striker thus explaining it's extreme usefulness, think M16 vs M16 A4

Well, there is a limit of how much you can modify an existing design to meet with new demands compared to starting from scratch to effectively achieve that specific role. Gipsy was definitely upgraded a lot though.

The specific modifications for Gipsy Danger were:
- Double Core Nuclear Reactor
- New Hull...Alloy (Something I couldn't hear)
- Something Muscle Span
- Something something
- New Fluid Synapse System
- OMFG Swords! x 2

So there is at least 6 confirmed upgrades for Gipsy Danger. In essence it has:
1. A better power source
2. Greater durability
3. Greater movement
4. Better something else
5. Greater control
6. Greater offense

I'm just trying to somehow convince myself that Cherno didn't have to die like a bitch

every time I watch this movie I'm going to watch with the little hope that somehow they make it out, even though I know it's never going to happen. It's the only way I can get through the last battle in Saving Private Ryan even though I know what's going to happen, downside is I'm always as angry as I was when I originally saw the movie lol

another thing

considering the treatment of Coyote Tango, why did they bother showing us it's specs and unveiling it in the build up to the movie?

I mean seeing how poorly it got treated (they didn't even give us a clear shot of what it looked like) why not make the blue prints and stat cards for all the other Jaegers??

What was the 2 aussies plan with the flareguns on the Kaiju. I mean they grabbed those flare guns and acted like they had a plan, shot the thing in the face and then... Gipsy shows up. So what the hell were they hoping to accomplish?

out of all the stuff that happened in the movie, the wall is still the dumbest thing ever. When you hear 'The wall' i was expecting some scifi energy field dome or something, but it just seems like it's built like any typical modern damn or building.

Surely some writer could have thought up a better alternative for punching robots?

Cherno didn't go out like a chump to me either although I do wish there was much more time with them and Crimson. Love dat elbow drop on Otachi. :3

Stall it as much as possible really. Herc basically told his son that we could either die doing nothing or die doing something stupid, i.e. flare gun to the face.

Also, what Jaeger is the one in the middle of this pic? The left kinda looks like Coyote Tango and the right one is Tacit Ronin. Is it a precursor to Crimson Typhoon?

MK1s killed it's pilots regularly because it had no shielding for it's nuclear reactors.

Cherno uses an alternative fuel and has definitely improved in safety. Otherwise if you look at Cherno Alpha's cockpit, everything looks patched together and rebuilt using spareparts indicating that it has been updated for a long time.

Coyote tango's original draft, Crimson typhoon's original draft and Tacit ronin.

What was the line in the movie where Idris Elba goes " something something in a Jaeger!!!" HAHAHAHA ... it was hilarious but I can't remember exactly what it was.

Finally saw it last night with my wife. Amazing. She didn't dislike it either, so that's something. Definitely heavily anime inspired, but that's not horrible.

My only gripes were that the dialogue wasn't mixed well in parts, I wasn't able to understand/hear some things. I couldn't understand a fucking word either of the scientists said most of the time.

I don't understand what the Aussie pilots were hoping to achieve by shooting flare guns at a kaiju. What was the plan there?

Missed this. Yes.

They should've had a mini one right smack dab in the middle. It started to drag a bit at one point. Though the dream sequence helped to break it up a bit.

I wouldn't be surprised if Coyote Tango's battle was originally going to be a full-fledged action scene instead of being off-screen.
