Loved the movie but what I heard, it hasnt been doing well box office wise which is real sad. Movies like this one doesn't come around often. 3D seemed better than Avatar too.

I hate how the song thats played during the end credits isn't available yet.

I was really impressed with the japanese little girl's acting, she really sold her scenes.
Totally.

Just came back from my 2nd screening, I think it's the first time ever that I double dip the next day. My mom loved it to pieces. The sense of scale is amazing, I found that I liked the music better this time, I love how it changes according to the jaegers country, the characters, etc. I complained about some of the close-ups early itt but luckily it's only 3 of them that bothered me, tops. Great fun.

Theatre wasn't as packed as yesterday, not a good sign since I have a feeling that a lot of people here are watching it to support our paisano GDT.

My fucking man. This is what I want to fucking see, Mecha Otachi. Rodan, this is how it's done old man.

I enjoyed the movie, but did not expect the acting to be so... over the top. it was interesting.

The whole movie was so over the top that it was refreshing. It took me back to my childhood days of watching Ultraman, Godzilla and all this over the top Japanese flicks. :D

Still hyped for the film. Here in Germany it won't come out till Thursday.

Can't wait. To tide me over, I looked for a trailer with NGE intro music and finally found one.
Wish it has been done a bit more professionally, but it works to hype me more.

91m opening week WW. Decent? Bad?

Long way to profitability (est. ~$400 million). Word of mouth will need to give it legs for a long time to come. Still, it's better than the studio expected, I think, and with home video sales factored in, plus the positive publicity and reviews, it should be enough to get a sequel off the ground. The next one could really hit it big now that the first one has established the name.

Finally watched on Imax 3D. Absolutely spectacular and one of the most visually beautiful film ever seen. I have always been a huge fan of anime (especially mecha) and this film delivered so much for me on a personal level. I was just smiling all the way through and was hooked till the end. I had to almost hold back screaming with joy during the Hong Kong battle when the
Kaiju turned into a pterodactyl type monster and flies across the neon sky
.

Judging from some of the previous comments from others I was expecting the film to be uber cheesy in its dialogue but it turned out to be fine. I think some people are just exaggerating or misunderstanding the genre and from what I saw the dialogue was in tune to typical mecha anime genre tropes. I loved the sentimentality of the film and how it emphasis the importance of teamwork and working together for a common good. It shows how human beings can achieve something together which makes for a nice change from all the doom and gloom blockbusters we usually have. I hope we see a sequel and hopefully we see a new wave of anime films in the future.

Some nice sequel ideas by Del Toro (hints at possible Mecha-kaiju) http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1710434/pacific-rim-2-guillermo-del-toro.jhtml

"I'll tell you a couple of things. We will have Gipsy 2.0 for sure," del Toro told MTV News, referring to one of the many giant robots that fight monsters. "We will have Gipsy 2.0 for sure. Second thing is you're gonna see a merging of Kaiju and Jaeger. And that is quite special."

Following the adventures of human soldiers who pilot giant robots called jaegers to fight against undersea monsters called Kaiju, the film climaxes with
an enormous showdown underwater as the last remaining robots fight to close a portal between our world and the one from which the monsters emerge. Del Toro said that if nothing else, this epic showdown produced a few promising ideas about how to further explore this larger-than-life world and push its mythology into new territory.

"Just think about it for a second," del Toro explained. "We sent Gipsy to the other side, right? It exploded, but whatever remains stays there." Referring to "drifting," the psychological process through which jaeger pilots team up with each other to maneuver their giant machines, he highlighted another plot point that might come into play in a sequel.

"We've drifted with a Kaiju brain," he observed
."Well, then start riffing on that and you'll get to something."

So those early prediction tracking number turn out to be pretty accurate.

Pacific Rim actually is being release between a bunch of garbage. Lone Ranger, Dispicable Me 2, Grown Up 2 all garbage. DM2 some how make godzillions of dollars because its less terrible.

Really didn't care much for this movie at all. I'll be fine if I never see it again.

That said. It's a weird one for me. Because whilst I really didn't enjoy it, I couldn't help but feel like the movie didn't miss a beat in terms of what was probably it's source material. I felt like somebody who was in to anime / all things Japan and whatnot would really enjoy it and that the people this film was aimed at would probably consider it to be incredible. Talking to some friends afterwards confirmed that for me.

So whilst technically good, it wasn't for me.

Watched it yesterday and loved it! Haven't enjoyed a summer movie this much since ID4 and The Matrix.

I didn't notice any product placement. I don't remember the last time that happened.

Edit: Also, the best use of Imax 3D I have ever seen. It might be post conversion, but that didn't matter one bit.

Sucks that Cherno Alpha is not getting a figure in Neca series 2. I was waiting for it to be announced to order it in tandem with the Art book and save a bit on shipping costs, but I guess I'll have to pick some other figure. Thinking of Striker or Crimson.

Saw this yesterday in IMAX 3D, and it was pretty awesome. I was smiling like an idiot through the entire intro section. That was still the best section of the movie hands down. There was a bit of a lull near the middle that I was getting kind of bored at, but otherwise it was a pretty excellent movie. I didn't mind the story being big and dumb, because the spectacle was good enough. I also really liked Charlie Day's character.

It's going to get eaten alive domestically. Between Dispicable Me 2, Grown Ups 2, Red 2, Turbo and The Conjuring this upcoming week (R.I.P.D. is going to be RIP on arrival), and The Wolverine the week thereafter, I don't see it having any type of meaningful legs. There's simply too many movies out.

Also according to an expert in the Wkd Box Office Thread (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=70361411&postcount=132) she apparently is reviled in Japan as a "traitorous whore"

Singer. Talk show host. Voice actress. Traitorous whore.

Wat no, he meant Rinko, not the little girl! Nooooooo

Also a hearty lol for that on two fronts: Japanese culture experts, and iirc she was the first Japanese actress to get nominated for an Oscar in like decades

It didn't make sense to plug her name for a summer blockbuster and shit either :-P

My girlfriend and I saw this for the second time yesterday, we actually liked it better the second time around! This is my favorite movie of the year so far, I enjoyed it more than Star Trek and Iron Man 3, and I really loved both of those.

But the theater was fairly empty, not even 1/4 full. :(

This is going to be a guilty pleasure film of mine when I get it on blu-ray (day ONE). One of those movies I'll just pop in now and then to make me smile for two hours. I can only hope we are so lucky to get a sequel, even though this one was wrapped up very nicely. I actually love that they didn't set it up for a sequel in any real way, so refreshing nowadays when most every movie leaves doors open for sequels.

Would anyone be so kind as to tell me the measurements of the Shinkawa poster, preferably in centimeters?

Maybe there isn't enough for a sequel, but what about an animated series? I'd think it could do well on Adult Swim
Especially since Big O ended too soon.

second comment on this,

was smiling a lot during the action scenes .

payed child fee instead of adult matinee . huehuehue

guillermo del toro (or anyone who works for him) please make a second one , because

i'm a five star general

Digging the Variant, thanks for the heads up.
You're very welcome. :)

The thing I don't like about the Variant is that I feel the lose some detail that's more noticeable on the Regular, such as Mako Mori's shoe. It "pops" a lot more in the Regular, as does the sky/lights of the vehicles, etc..

Both look great, though. I really love the look of this one.

One thing that surprised me and was cool was that everything I had thought the film would be about was packed into the first five minutes. Film hit the ground running.

As horrible as the first Wolverine movie was i dont understand why anyone would be hyped to see the new one. Its not even RedBox status for me, ill wait till its on HBO. RED wasnt a good movie either.

The only thing it really has going for it is holding on to the IMAX screens for a couple more weeks, assuming the strong IMAX sales don't drop too much.
