The thing that made the memory sequence so great to me is that it was basically like a scene directly out of Cloverfield, except interrupted at the end with a Jaeger coming in and fighting the monster. It would have broken up the moderate tedium of that whole section of the movie if that had been expanded upon and made longer. Seeing a fight exclusively from the perspective of a small person on the ground would have been pretty damn neat.

out of all the stuff that happened in the movie, the wall is still the dumbest thing ever. When you hear 'The wall' i was expecting some scifi energy field dome or something, but it just seems like it's built like any typical modern damn or building.

Surely some writer could have thought up a better alternative for punching robots?

If you were in control of a society facing oblivion, it might be safer to have a productive decoy plan to fool the masses into thinking they are doing something useful when in fact everyone is fucked. Saves on the anarchy factor.

Btw, could someone post a .gif of Tacit Ronin? It was the bladed white one standing over some rubble in the News Footage/Intro part of the movie I think. Im not sure if omeone in this thread already has...

Sure, someone has already, but I'll never get tired of seeing this:

When it showed up in a trailer I thought we'd see a glimpse of it fighting in a flashback at least =(

Yeah. I was expecting Crimson Typhoon to do some crazy Kung Fu moves with those 4 arms, but that didn't happen. And the Russian Jaeger lived up to the expectations of being a heavyweight tank. He endured so much abuse from 2 Kaijus.

Didn't that actually happen? He sliced up Otachi pretty well I thought. You can see the cuts pretty clearly. Plus, the torso twist to avoid the takedown was pretty awesome. Yes I wanted more but they did show some of his stuff. As quickly as it may have seemed, both Crimson and Cherno (with the headlock) went down fighting IIRC.

Loved the movie by the way. It checked off one of my childhood movie fantasies the way The Avengers did, but a bit better. I want a sequel, or prequel. It doesn't really matter, I just want more!

have they said anaything about deleted scenes.

there has to be 1 or 2 mecha fights cut

"This is my director’s cut. There will not be an extended cut right now, we’re not planning on it, but there will be deleted scenes and they were deleted for a reason," he said, adding that he'll be recording the commentary soon but that this DVD extras as a whole might be leaner, because the "DVD and Blu-ray market is shrinking so we can’t be as extravagant as we were with other discs in the past."

Why did everyone laugh when the nerd said 'blah blah balh its digital it can't work offline" and the macho protagonist said 'my jaegar isn't digital, its analog"...why did I laugh?

I think my only problem with the battle underwater was that there was nothing to show scale. They didn't feel like giant robots.

This is actually an excellent point. There should have been destroyed submarines, aircraft carriers and other warships, plus other man-made debris from all the failed pre-Jaeger attempts at attacking Kaijus and destroying the rift.

I laughed too.

It was funny because there was so much conviction in the delivery of something so absolutely nonsensical

I wished they had a least done a underwater/navy ship set piece hopscotch battle similar to evangelion in episode 8. Oh well.

That was a fantastic fight and the beginning of the best run in the show i.e. the middle episodes when Asuka was healthy and fighting, even had two pilots syncing up in one cockpit!

Would really work in the PR universe, but the movie needed something like this, something bright and sunny and inventive.

From the comic it's stated that driving a jaeger is very physically and mind consuming. You need to be in top condition.

As for the 2nd point. This is a very important mission. They couldn't risk greenhorns with no real experience screwing anything up. It was their last chance to blow up the portal.

But Mako was a greenhorn. A greenhorn who just got through royally fucking up.

They also didn't seem as menacing. There was something about watching those things jump around that sent a chill down my spine. How fast they moved, the agility, the ferocity. It was all lost underwater because they were just swimming super fast.

Guys...

I've never watched Evangelion...

I only barely know what that is.

When they dramatically stated that the Kaiju was a Category 5, I was expecting something mindblowing... But it was just more of the same.

you know, all they needed was like some props for the final sea battle, like this area was a sunken ship graveyard. Navigating and taking advantage of wreckage could be really neat and give a reference for scale.

Ya, that's a neat idea. It would've added to the atmosphere, especially how that scene progresses, where they just jump into the depths and they start to lose visibility. Having it slowly reveal a submarine graveyard around the rift would've been amazing. Missed opportunity.

Are there any amazingly awesome Pacific Rim wallpapers?

Goole just gives me Jaeger ones. Not really as interested in the Jaeger ones, but any Kaiju or Jaeger vs. Kaiji ones?

Can someone explain to me the timeline of the general guy and the Japanese girl? She's a kid when the kaikus hit Japan, and that's when general is a Jaeger pilot. Now she's at least in her early 20s. I was under the impression that Raleigh was one of the first Jaeger pilots and that was only 5 years ago...something seems off about the timeline.

2013 to 2025. 6 months to second attack + 3-6 months to third then deciding to make jaegers. 12 months to make the first jaeger. 2015 should be when mako was attacked, so 10 years. She's probably 18.

Keep in mind that when Gipsy Danger was piloted solo it was missing a limb and had a whole leg immobilized.

I think the general timeline goes:
K-Day (kaiju invasion) High losses, strategy consists of baiting away from population centers and nuking them.

Within a year the first Jaeger is constructed, wins. Jaeger program initiated in full

Indeterminate time passes(A decade I think), during which Jaeger's mop the floor with Kaiju. Pilots become super-stars.

Events at the begining of the movie, Larger combat oriented Kaijus emerge, at the same time a Pilot shortage begins. Newer pilots simply aren't as good as in the past. More and more Jaegers lost

5 year time skip, conclusion of the film. Jaeger program halted, "Wall of Life" plan initiated.

Raleigh was a pilot at least as far back as 2017 (referenced in film).
2020 was year 7 of the kaiju war.
kaijus arrive in 2013.
film takes place in 2025.

seems fine to me.

The timeline does seem a bit odd considering how young Mako looked in the flashback. It looks like Mako was 13 during the attack?

2003, April - Mako's birth.
2013, August - First Attack
2014, November - Jaeger Program begins
2016, May - Mako's parents killed (age 13)
2020 - Raleigh's brother killed
2025 - Breach closed (Mako is 22)

No by the time Raleigh pilots they are already at around mark 3 jaegars and it's 2020 , the first jaegars were around 2014 .
(Beaten and with much better specifics too)

Ok thanks. She looked like she was 8 in the flashback.

Damn this was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Terrible acting, casting, story, etc. CG in the fight scenes were cool albeit extremely cheesy.

Not sure why everyone loved it.

Very enjoyable movie. I probably enjoyed it more than MoS, but, of course, my expectations were far lower for Pacific Rim.

And yup, this movie demands an IMAX screen. The 3D was pretty damn good, too. I might take the lady to see it this weekend if it's still on IMAX

The first bit is basically Evangelion,

I thought they were going to go somewhere with this, like some shit like Mako is actually a product of a secret genetics experiment and is half-kaiju or something, which is why she's super-compatible with Raleigh. Too bad it all was just an excuse to do an Independence Day-style ending.

Who else was disappointed that the Chinese and Russian Jaegers basically did nothing, despite having better designs and more competent pilots? And that the Japanese Jaeger isn't even in the fucking movie?

It is but you barely see it. Coyote Tango is Stacker's Jaeger in the flashback.
